the VERY first time I ever heard the expression "math rock" was from a member of Throwing Muses. I think she should be receiving royalties for that term, at this point.
At the time I thought it more shocking than all the hardcore I was listening to, which despite its speed and volume still seemed to inhabit pretty well-circumscribed territory. Throwing Muses, on the other hand, were constantly charging off in different directions, finding a strange tunefulness in unexpected places. They were (are?) real inventors.
The fidelity is eavesdroppish, but I thought the Throwing Muses rendered this song quite well, actually - a song which, it seems to me, might be quite difficult to play. The bizarre, propulsive surging rhythm would glaringly show any flaw, I'd imagine. But it's relentlessness is precisely what made it so compelling! When I first heard it I couldn't help leaning forward into the tension of it, hoping for some sort of conventional resolution, but they didn't really provide one! Rad!
I was turned on to Throwing Muses when Lonely as an Eyesore (4AD label) compilation album came out. Been a fan ever since, still today, hope to be for 20 more years, at the least.
I have to respectfully disagree with the bottom post. I think this is a fantastic version of "Fish" and is Kristin dancing?!

Definitely the worst version of the song I've ever heard. It's still great though.
