If you notice when Zack first opens the coffin, you can see red clothing before the scene changes. I guess Vincent really does sleep in a coffin

Alright first of all he's not a vampire and I know its him becasue he goes in there to repent from sins that he caused. If you want the best info then play Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Ceberus.

He loved a woman named Lucrecia. But she was in love with another man named Dr. Hojo. Lucrecia died because of the experimentations that Hojo did to her and she also gave birth to Sephiroth, the antagonist of Final Fantasy VII. Hojo shot Vincent during an argument about Lucrecia's death and then Hojo operated on Vincent, giving him the form he now has. His sin was that he couldn't save the woman that he loved. I think that about sums it up.

She gave him some addled Mako and Vincent came back to life. But now he was Chaos - the monster

who lived in the addled Mako. Chaos commanded Vincent. But Lukretia gave him another Mako and Vincent had his real form back. And now Vincent can transform to Chaos.

Lukretia died and Vincent said, it´s because of him.

So he go in a casket. End

Everything becomes clear about Vincent during Dirge of Cerberus. The Gameplay for that game was terrible, but look up the scenes on youtube, they weave together like a movie, and you can get all the storyline that way.
