If you listen to them as Bauhaus, they were very edgy, very lonely, very desolate, very arty, this Bowie cover notwithstanding. They had a very...I guess "German" (even tho they're English) experimental sound. They did a lot of what sounds like improv and it's all very, very dark. They were goth before anyone knew what goth was but they were never pop, as other goth groups were. They were too edgy. They became pop later, when they all went solo.

Bauhaus was a great band. Glam meets Edgar Allen Poe meets punk meets Baudelaire. They all went on to notable pop careers briefly after their split. Murphy put out two albums at the very least and the others banded together and performed a cover that got a lot of play at the time, MTV vid included.
