  • This man is the reason why I my hockey number is 77 and I have been using sherwood sticks for over 10 years.

  • the best

  • I'll be cowkicked!

  • NHL Career Goals ... Top Five:

410 by Ray Bourque in 22 seasons

396 by Paul Coffey in 20 seasons

340 by Al MacInnis in 22 seasons

332 by Phil Housley in 20 seasons

310 by Denis Potvin in 15 seasons

  • I didn't know he was a captain of Pittsburgh Penguins...:P I guess when Mario Lemieux was out

  • the only defensive thing he did was line up behind the forwards at the faceoff that was the only time he stayed in his own end.... I guarantee he only had like 2 minutes of shorthanded ice time in his career... great freaking skater though

  • coffey wore a mullet!

  • Amazing player. He didn't have as many points as Bourque, but he averaged more points per game. Go Coffey!!

  • Did you even look up his stats before you posted this? Ray Bourque is the all-time leader in scoring for defensemen. He's also a significantly better defender than Coffey. Coffey isn't even in the top 10 for defensemen if you ask me. He was a liability in the defensive zone and has absolutely zero physical presence.

Let me please suggest this website for you. (hockeydb(dot)com) Before you post a video again.

  • :51 i've never heard a more boring announcer...that's another reason why i hate shittsburgh

  • Coffey was great! Too bad the Penguins are garbage. GO WINGS!

  • AHHAHAHA Wings are shit moron. They only reason they make the playoffs is because they play on the west conference who all suck compared to the east

  • @SmashBrosFan19

Have you ever seen a game of hockey, let alone know anything about it?

  • @crazyquark55 East > West, overall. Everyone knows that.

  • @SmashBrosFan19

Let me guess, you think the Capitals and Penguins are the greatest teams ever, and that Ovechkin and Crosby are miles ahead of every other player?

  • @crazyquark55 No. I actually hate Ovechkin. So keep talking please

  • @SmashBrosFan19

Yeah, but you don't deny the part about Crosby. I'm gonna assume you didn't start watching the NHL until after the lockout.

  • @crazyquark55 I won't deny the part about Crosby because he's better than Ovechkin, and I'm from Pittsburgh. And I started watching hockey during the Mario Lemieux years moron.

  • Coffey was an offensive machine !

  • still hold the record for most goals in a season by a defenseman with "48"...best offensive defenceman EVER IN NHL PERIOD.

  • @OwlEyes85 you're joking right?

Bobby Orr doesn't ring a bell for you?

  • the best skater too!...

  • Oops, I forgot one. Detroit lost in the finals when he played for them during the 94/95 season. That could have been his 11th!!

That would have put him right up there with some of those old Montreal players that have nearly a dozen.

    Poor Paul:(

  • Comment removed

  • Then after playing nearly 4 seasons with the Wings, he was then traded away right before Detroits 2 in a row!

That makes 10 Cups that Paul Coffey potentially could have hoisted had it not been for untimely trades. I wonder if he has considered that?

He still finished right in there at the top, stats wise. Had it not been for all those trades, I think he would have laid waste to the record books...defenceman or otherwise.

His jersey retirement ceremony here in Edmonton was pretty cool.

  • If you think about it, he very well could have ended up with 9 or 10 Cups!

3 with Edmonton, and potentially could have had 2 more had he not been traded.

He got 1 with Pittsburg. Could have landed a second one there had he not been traded. They had an awesome team! I'm actually from Edmonton, where Rob Brown now does the color commentary for the Oilers.

In '93 the Kings Traded Paul just before their playoff run to the finals. He might have made the difference for them in that series.

  • i heard he dulled his skates so he could glide over the ice easier.... is that true

  • @tkrotch09 No....BUT he did wear a size 6.25 skate (about 2 sizes too small). He would actually take a router to the inside of his skate to make a little more room for his big toe.

  • He might not have been the fastest skater but definetely the smoothest most efficient skater. Does anyone know where he learned how to skate the way did? Who in the present day NHL skates anything like that?

  • Scott Niedermayer

  • @poochpoints all of them. NHL skaters get better every generation.

  • Someone remind me why he ended up playing for 20 different teams!

  • @RichYan33 because he was a defensive liability and a lockerroom cancer

  • @cjmahoney Lockerroom cancer??? COMPLETELY UNTRUE!! In 1987 He transformed the Penguins from a locker room joke to a team that was proud of their rink and fellow players. He brought pride to the Penguin's players and staff and switched the focus of Management (who's owner at the time was more concerned about the 49'rs). I know that for a fact.

  • @RichYan33 he played 90% of his carreer with 2 teams (and went where the money was for his last years). Could you blame him?

  • Comment removed

  • um....Bourque had more goals than him, as well as everything else, so hows he number 1?

  • Yeah Bourque did have more goals and assists...coffey is number 2 though

  • he just uses his speed so well

  • I remember having him in Detroit and even later in his career he could still fly and create chances as well as anybody.

  • Coffey, Gretzky and Messier all could score very well even when they were 35 years old. It makes me sick when I hear idiots say those guys could never play in today's game. "Coffey was the best passer up ice"-Gretzky

  • Paul was a huge asset to any team he went to, especially Pittsburgh, Edmonton, and Detroit. Next to Bobby Orr, Coffey's the best damn defenseman ever. It's a shame that he was traded in 1992, but he, we (Pittsburgh) needed to increase our defense. Let's not forget that Coffey was part of the Oiler Trinity with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Out of those guys, Coffey's my favorite. The NHL misses you, Paul,. You rock!

  • we needed a little more defense, but make no mistake, wayne gretzky ran that kings team and was desperately trying to put the pieces back together from the oilers dynasty, to no avail

  • True that we needed more defense. And in the end result, former manager Craig Patrick did organize an All-Star team. And even though Wayne never won a Stanley Cup in 1993, he DID after all bring more hockey to the U.S. and save hockey in Hollywood. Coffey is definitely one of the most Cup-winning players out there.

  • he was awesome...fast as hell

  • 2nd best ever behind Orr. Its no coincidence that gretzkey, messier, jagr and lemieux were at their best when coffey was behind moving the puck behind them.

  • When the Pens picked up Coffey, I knew they were on their way. After years of watching guys like Ron Stackhouse stand behind his own net and kill half of a power play - watching Coffey skate the puck end-to-end for us was amazing. He could be a defensive liabilty sometimes, but there's nothing like having one of the best ever on the home team

  • My friends uncle is Paul Coffey... Paul's mother just died :(

  • well, that's the circle of life.

  • Paul Coffey played one season for the Philadelphia Flyers...the 1996-97 season..I have the team photo posted on my wall...that was the last season the Bullies made it to the Stanley Cup Finals

  • oilers= stacked team

    P.C. was good though

  • Anyway, who has the most goals for a defenceman in NHL?

  • Ray Bourque

  • @gqbed anyway did even goalers had pads when ray bourque played :P

this is a joke don't cry keep your puppy tears for yourself

  • I used to go to his sons school :P

  • Coffey is not the all-time goals leader for a defenceman numb nuts.

  • Thanks, I know. You're not the first to point out my mistake (of which there are many in this video). But thank you for calling me numbnuts.

  • @gqbed What you should have shown was in 1986 he had 48 goals (Most of any defenseman in one season).

  • Coffey=God

  • What, no highlights from his days as an Oiler? Some of his best seasons were in Edmonton-how could you leave that out?

  • See the video's info... the intent was only to highlight the pittsburgh years

  • Like Grets he will always be an Oiler first because his best years were with the Oilers.

  • but his final with the inevitable blakc hawks

  • right on, his best years were with the oilers!!

  • holy shit he wasnt kidding!! There is a guy named Chaz on my team he said his cousin was a pro hockey player named pual coffey!

His last name is coffey!! wowow

  • All i gotta say about Paul Coffey is that he is a defensemen who scored 48 fuckin goals in a season.

  • Hi,

With all due respect to Ray Bourque (whom I've met)...

On the eighth day, God created Bobby Orr. Early the next morning...He started working on Paul Coffey!

Paul, we STILL LOVE YA in Edmonton! THANK YOU!

  • paul coffey is one of the greatest deffensmen to ever play.

  • He grew up in the same city as me and attended the same elementary school as I did.

  • you're a dumb shit ray bourqe has the most assists and points for a defencemen. RAY FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yup, I know. Those are his rankings when he retired.

  • Wow. That was a great vid! Woo! Go Pens!! One of the greatest defensmen ever!

  • Greatest Defencemen Ever:

    1. Bobby Orr

    2. Paul Coffey

    3. Doug Harvey

  • Orr's points per game, goals per game and assists per game are far past everyone else....Coffey is second in points per game and assists per game but Denis Potvin is second in goals per game. Potvin was one of the best body checkers ever and was about as mean as they get. I loved watching Coffey skate and I hated Potvin but I would rate them 1.Orr 2.Potvin 3.Coffey 4.Bourque.....hard to judge Harvey because the game was much different

  • Potvin had better point production than Harvey, well most did but Harvey was the heart of the Canadiens defense that won all those Cups.

  • Coffey was nasty. However, Ray Bourque is #1 in both goals and assists by a defensman

  • Yeah, Bourque played one more season than Coffey.

Bourque played a total of 203 MORE GAMES!

Idiot and he only finished with 14 more goals.

  • What you just said does not make my statement any less true

  • Coffey could skate around most players as if they were pylons. Plus with that big shot of his made him the best defenseman of his day.

  • Coffey could skate backwards better than most players could skate forward. Amazing defenseman.

  • Second best behind Ray Bourque, that is.

  • ever heard of Bobby Orr ?

  • I was referring to the generation of Bourque and Coffey (the '80s/early to mid-'90s), not overall. If we're talking of all time, then yes, definitely Bobby Orr. No question about it.

  • You had me worried for a sec there.. (~;

  • Sorry, I do not know the name of the song. It came from a royalty free audio cd containing nothing by audio tracks meant as fill-in sound, like it is used here.

  • and Bourque played 200 games more than Coffey, i think if coffey had played 200 games more then he would have beaten Bourque

  • what is the song name, great player

  • Bourque is finally #1 for goals, assists and points for a defenseman, but he became #1 in his last year playing. Coffey broke Potvin's record and was #1 for some years. If he had played the number of games Bourque played in the league, Coffey would still be #1 in goals, assists and points. What an offensive defenseman and skater he was!

  • if i where defenseman i would be paul coffey

  • All I gotta say as a wings fan, this "talented" player...MESSED UP HUGE WHEN HE SHOT THE PUCK STRAIGHT INTO HIS OWN NET TRYING TO CLEAR THE POINT IN THE 96 PLAYOFFS!!!!! Yea he was a great player, but come on!

  • elite player , respect

  • Eroneous is a pretty good word for this video even tho its good. But I know people are say a lot of details had to do with this status. Like Coffey teammates but bottom line stat. Coffey 4 Cups. Bourque 1 Cup.

  • Bourque may have more career totals but he will never have the pure talent Coffey did. Coffey would never have been embarrassed in a playoff game like Bourque was by Lemieux.

  • uh, no doubt coffey was one of the greatest offensive defenseman ever to play the game. Absolutely brilliant skater. But Coffey was an embarrassment a LOT defensively. Coffey wasn't half the defensive defenseman bourque was.

  • For anyone who knows anything about hockey they would know the Ray Bourque has more goals assists and points then Coffey. Good video but get your facts correct, Lots of hockey vidoes including Coffey and others at my channel youtube/hockeyguy38

  • he was fast, but he was pretty mechanical with the puck and didn't see the ice all THAT well.

    Just ask Scotty Bowman

  • that's why hes in the hall and you are...barely at mcdonanlds

  • Probably the best ever at seeing the ice

  • he's amazing! a few of his kids go to my school in toronto i get so excited when he comes in to pick them up haha

  • Bourque has him in Goals and Assists.

  • uhhh. Bourque is #1 in every scoring category for defenseman. Get it right. I love Coffey, one of my favorites, but this video eroneous.

    Bourque:

    410 goals

    1169 assists

    1579 points

  • he is right, Bourque is 1st overall. Where does Ray stand in all time points leaders? Also where does Al MacInnis stand for goals, assists and points by a defensemen?

  • i got a coffey sher wood stick and its the best stick ive had. i love it i still got it to. coffey is great.

  • In Coffey's prime years (1983-1991), he was the fastest hockey player in the world. Other notables include Bob Bourne (he skated through the entire Rangers in 1983), Mike Gartner (fastest lap around the ice at 1993 All-Star Game), Mark Messier, Bobby Orr and Vladimir Krutov of Russia.

  • Mike Gartner... come on! They all cheated with their sticks in 1993. Don't you remember?

  • ggbed, I highly doubt that, during his final days in Boston he was slow as molases, and that was like 5 years ago.

  • The Doctor is in. He's a ledgend.

  • Messier said he saw him at the All-Star break and Coffey is still in such good shape that he would probably STILL be the fastest man in the NHL

  • the doctor was awesome...man could he skate and wasnt afraid to shoot it too...wouldnt it be nice to have a guy like that on the point again...gonchar just cant compare to coffey
