Doris Eaton, the last REAL Ziegfeld Girl, passed-away in the past couple of years. One can only imagine what a real show was like... maybe not as dramatic for obvious cinematic reasons. Ask yourself why are those girls dancing on the beds to "You" and pretending to drink champagne sexier than anything you could see today. Yes, sadly much is lost in today's world,
What a great production numbers those are. It's to bad Hollywood doesn't have that kind of talent to do this kind of stuff anymore. When i worked at Radio City Music Hall several years ago we did something very similar to this with these three song. That's when Radio City had big stage productions.
@Bootboyrick Yes, it really does "out-ziegfeld- ziegeld", as was the original intention of the film when released, and to give audiences the pleasure of what it would be like to have a night out in the New Amsterdam. Your remark about today's lack of talent is correct. Not only that however, the film cost a staggering 3.5 million in 1936 - in today's dollars, close to half a billion! Not even James Cameron has spent that, (yet) & not sure if anyone would be that brave today given the risks!

I have this on VHS but this version's quality is so much better. Say, doesn't Luise Rainer shown at 1:40 look healthy! :)

@hannahlmatt Bolger made his name as an "Eccentric" dancer. You must see him in his signature number, "Once In Love With Amy".
