The key point Korten dances around but doesn't get to is the two-party duopoly in the American political system. Whatever problems this country is facing, it's because the Reps and the Dems have been working together to maintain their hold on power, to maintain the corporate status quo, and to ignore the constituents that get them into office in the first place. Nothing will change if everyone bitches about this, but 99% still vote for the R or the D.
There were no law schools at the time the Constitution was written. Back then aspiring lawyers "read law" with a senior attorney. It was like an apprenticeship system. So basically what this guy is saying is incorrect.
@WeNeedA3rdParty Lawyers "went to school" or "read law with senior attorney" either way you say it, basically has ZERO impact on whether what is saying is correct or not, America is/was a plutocracy and for that matter Supreme Court justices were lawyers/children of the elite. The definition of "school' is irrelevant.
It's simply a fascinating truth. Democracy has been completely overturn by the wealthy. It's been going on for decades now, the decay is finally just now showing, unfortunately.
Davod Korten is a very wise man. If the major networks weren't the instruments of insane greed/mammon, he would probably be more famous than most talk show hosts and politicians. We'd probably have world peace too. Follow his advice!

Calling him names and refraining from refuting a single thing he says is not the most compelling way to get people to believe you. Just so you know. Of course, you'd actually have to know something about the subject matter to meaningfully engage his assertions, which is probably why you didn't. I guess what I mean to say is that comments like yours are pointless. I guess this one probably is too...

your wriiten expression is very poor, you need to attend community college and take a course in exposition ie. writing. this guy is selling 45 year old snake oil to young chumps and nostalgic hippies with one foot in the grave.
This is the kind of thought paradigm that is at the root of real democracy. A value of community is essential to taking back our power and essentially our lives. Thank you David!
To judge the founding fathers upon today's standards isn't fair; however, Korten is keen on the fact that history was written from the white male view (read Zinn's "A People's History of the U.S.")
Consumerism is sad, but it's up to the people to overcome their attachments to material goods. Basic items are necessary, but does one really need ten pair of jeans and shoes? Everyone should live abroad to experience a different worldview and what is important to that culture--then one can see!
Once each individual learns how truly powerful they really are, then our system will change for the better. The Shift is Happening. Some people don't want to know anything if it takes them away from the TV or shopping. Regardless, a shift is happening and when more people understand their part in all this, then understand that we truly are all one, I believe it will all fall into place easily. Thank You for your posting.
The consumerism that is created by watching television cannot be denied. There are statistics supporting the fact that people who watch more television are xx% more discontent with their lives than those who do not. I'm grateful for this video and the information David Korten shares!
This person clearly does not understand that in economics, consumers benefit alongside companies. Yes, firms make profits, but only if YOU let them! And you only let them by purchasing their goods, like the computer you're using right now. Look around your room and pick out ten objects. Ask yourself if you enjoy these things. Now, maybe you'd be happy without them, but a lot of us like the things we have, made my companies like Apple, Sony, Microsoft, Motorola, GE, etc.
Yeah but what about wall street firms which operate on phantom wealth and dont produce any real goods. The manufacture money out of thin air. He isnt talking about companies that produce goods, but rather financial institutions. Sony isnt getting bailed out banks are.
kmeeks3, i agree with you about the wall street companies. their ability to create money out of thin air makes them no better than a dude in his basement counterfeiting -- criminal.
@cbellison@cbellison Yeah, but the ratio of consumer benefit to company benefit is hardly equal or fair. First of all, when it comes to luxury or entertainment items (electronics, etc.), manufacturers use planned obsolescence to keep us upgrading, when they could've made something better to begin with. As far as necessities (food, utilities, healthcare/ medicine, insurance, education), I'm afraid we have little choice but to "let them" make a profit, at whatever cost.

Workers need to take over the workplaces and the police and military. We already occupy all three; we just have to unite.

We, in Latin America are giving big impulse to deep democracy, and participative and democratic revolutions...
Specially in Venezuela... ;-)
