This great songs can apply to so many cities, not just Dublin. When I hear it I think of the place where I grew up, which when from a town to a city in my 50 years. I can really understand the pain and bitterness in the song for I really don't recognize my hometown anymore, when I go back I can't help wonder what the Hell happened. I have heard people say life is about change, I have come to believe life is all about loss.
This is my Favourite dubliners song but it does bring a tear to my eye's as i miss the old dublin of my childhood! I have posted this vid to my Fb group and thankx for the great pics ;))
unique old buildings have been demolished,to make way for the generic sterile glass and concrete boxes that passes for architecture these days.O well thats progress, I supose!
I first heard this song sung by the musicians and local gentry at a famous Temple Bar pub. A genuinely magical experience. Both of the Dubliners' video versions of this song are extraordinarily moving. Thanks to the posters, and esp to Pete St. John for this little masterpiece.

I can't seem to choose which is better this one or the version that Ronnie Drew does but this is still beautiful.

Probably good to hear Jim McCann's voice for a change as there's lots of versions of Dubliners' songs with LK, or RD.
(I heard a late 80's version with Ronnie, which I listen to lots since He died -RIP)
