@aarondoobz the strangeness is what makes it art, and what makes them an artist anyway. Without that there is really no point to enjoy anyone in particular, or anyone at all because they'd be boring and all deliver the same sound.
@miketabc Yeah! Reeally agree with you about the grows on you part...but once the growing's done...WOW. Personally i love her voice aswell. I think it's all part of the magical package (*ahem* not meant to sound dodgy in any way!)
i like some of today's songs, i dance to them in a club, but i dont have them on my ipod, because i can listen to them on the radio and everywhere i go.
my point is… it is so refreshing to not hear songs with PARTY PARTY EVERYDAY in them
i want her to sing me to sleep every night.her voice is fascinating and her harp playing is nothing short of beautiful.kinda takes you to another world ya know?
When's the next album?!?!?!? After nine months I have finally gotten over the mind-blowing shock of Have one on me and can now just enjoy it, eternally, never get sick of it etc. as I can with her other music, but I'm prepared for another fix!!! WHEN!??!?!?
excellent song writer and harpist. She might not sound so bizarre if she didn't add so many affectations to her voice and diction. I know that's what people are loving these days, though...the more unconventional the more "genious"
@Lizzyjean5 I don't think it's affectation, just the way she sings. If she adds them, she's remarkably consistent at always adding them. It's a coherent style, and it's readily apparent that her voice has changed as time goes on. Who can say for certain if it's affectation, but i find no reason to call into question her sincerity, so to speak.
She may be sincere but there are some pretty distracting habits (if not affectations). Her voice is definitely being made to sound a certain way...you can tell by her speaking voice that there is no need for it to come out sounding like a dying rabbit. Or at least that's the way it used to sound...it's getting to be more bearable...
@Lizzyjean5 I'm not sure that she's adding affectations: she's concentrating so hard on getting to the right strings correctly that what you're alleging as her bizarreness may be nothing more than a side effect of muscianship. Weren't the Beatles touted as outre when they first arrived on the music scene? I'm not comparing her to them (honestly although I could listen to the Beatles all day; I couldn't listen to this little elf for long without tiring,) but please broaden your horizons a bit.
I just find it hard to believe that the way she sings is genuine. I sing and play guitar and my sister sings and plays the harp and neither of us ever have to screw up our faces or diction while concentrating. It's just an interesting trend in today's indie-artists. There are only so many ways and artist can be different these days and people seem to be loving whatever is unconventional and even bordering on ugly sounds a lot of the time. Thanks, though...I really like her songs!
To those who are bitching about her voice: If you dislike this, I suggest you avoid her first album, Milk-Eyed Mender, because her voice has actually mellowed considerably since then.
On another note: Andy Samberg? Really? A more random pairing I cannot think of.
Joanna invokes an emotional response with me each and every time I hear her play and sing. Thank you, thank you, thank you so very, very much Joanna. I love you darling...
@McHipster from the amount of references to being drunk in her songs, I just as soon assume she's not too picky about what she drinks. Massive huge fan here, too, by the way.
I swear if it wasn't for her contribution on the new Roots album, I would of missed a truly talented artist such as Joanna. Thanks to The Roots and Joanna for giving me a reason to keep my radio off.
I know that ones reaction to music is a personal thing but Ms. Newsom has pretty much ruined other music for me. It can move me so much and her voice is the most expressive one I have ever heard. I wouldn't trade it for a hundred of the cookie cutter pop voices out there.
It genuinely disturbs me that our culture is so walled off when it comes to modern music. The fact that people have virtually no attention span bothers me tremendously. Not only is this song one of the best songs released this year, but it is utterly gorgeous. Anything in Dmajor is absolutely brilliant.
Its so sad that people cant appreciate this because it isnt your standard pop song. Intro Verse Chorus Verse Chorus Bridge Outro is beyond over-played. Our country needs to grow the fuck up.
I was with you until "Anything in Dmajor is absolutely brilliant." That statement and the ones following are so utterly moronic that I'M now disturbed.
I guess the fact that Joanna herself has made a pop album is lost on you, eh?
@divegator i wasn't with him for a second. another hipster fucktard preaching about the despondent state of youth culture to a choir of like-minded individuals in a desperate attempt to arouse e-props and self-aggrandizement. please, quit fucking complaining about how close-minded you see everyone to be youngsunmusic through your hipster shades, one day you'll thank me.
@youngsunmusic I agree as much as I possibly can. This is music in it's truest form. Mesmerizing to say the least. She is a sorcerer with that harp. Our generation is confused on how to truly listen to music, they hear this foul trickery spew from the radio waves and accept it as the standard when in all reality people like Joanna Newsom and others carry the love of music and it shows clearly in the art they create.
@youngsunmusic And you as an individual, need to grow the fuck up and understand that not everyone in this country have the same tastes as you or relate to the same things as you do. Pop songs may lack in substance compared to someone as poetically meticulous as Joanna Newsom, but reach masses of people in a way that her music will most likely never do. Just because pop songs aren't as intellectually stimulating or as professionally executed doesn't make them any less relevant or great.
What I think is funny, is that all the haters say messed up shit in comments, but they sure aren't on Jimmy Kimmel performing for anybody. So I think the haters should STFU and go lay by their dish and not speak unless spoken to.
@catholicknees I guess you feel sorry for me because I did not like the song. The music was not bad, but trying to understand what she was singing made my head hurt.
@kraigthorne well its the same thing with metal, screamo, and rap but yet i bet your more open to those! you may noy completely understand her but most of the time you can.
@coco1fashion metal is a good comparison, because with metal the songs are ruined the second they start to sing (I mean scream). That being said, she is a much better singer than most metal front men.
I think he means the timing, and I can relate. Her voice is fine but she's constantly changing the pace and phrasing of her lyrics. An artist does that often to play around with songs that have grown familiar to them, but it became pretty distracting here. Good thing she played that harp perfectly.
