hey i was wondering in my lineage they make us practice static tan sao which in my opinion is a great exercise helping you engage the correct muscles but my problem is that i cant deactivate my chest muscle its right where the pectoral meets the shoulder. they say i should just keep practicing it and eventually it will melt away but im worried that its actually working it out and im having trouble actually relaxing that certain part of my muscle do u have any helpful ideas that i could use?
man i so enjoy learning wing chun from an awesome virtual teacher like you mr young :) keep them tutorials coming dude!and i sure don't want to get in a fight with you :))
Listen, friend :D I really want to learn Kung Fu(WING CHUN STYLE) but there where I live isn't anyone to teach me about it... Honestly, I train KARATE which is also nice, but I would like to learn Wing Chun.. So... Is there any chance that you make videos about explaining each step by step how to learn Wing Chun... I would be gladfull... :D
thanks for that demonstration. I can only wish there was a place close enough to where i can learn. I actually sat up in my seat beca use i couldn`t believe how easy yet useful this technique is. Thanks.
It looks like chineese sifus did'nt teach all their knowlege to japoneese martial art masters in the past... Cf karate... one tell you to shift yor opponent's arm, with the hip, yes, but one teach you to shift.... not to attack the center line... Ouch... So thank you again...
I thought that allmoves (tan,bong..) are created by the enemy's force.I mean i always hit but if thre is an oposite force i adjust with tan,bong..and not hit with tan or bong.Different way?
Wow great video! A lot of the concepts were taught really well!
I'm just curious, wasn't your assistant's(white shirt guy) forearm when doing tan sau too angled upwards? It looked like his structure could be easily broken through.
I was taught that the forearm should be slightly angled, but close to being parallel to the floor to maintain structure. I'm currently learning wing chun now and am new at it, so I just want to clarify.=)
@futboldeargentina i hope you dont mind me butting in on this question ;], But Tan sau doesn't really risk that at all like alot of wing chun tech, because its normaly accompanied with a strike, Aswell as gang saus wu saus. Or you could say the flow of wing chuns speed would be very swifty followed by another stirke. of such, E.g your first fighting form
Wauw, thanks a lot ^^ I've always wanted to learn a lot of different martial arts (basics, mastering them would take a lot of time), but I don't find the time and money in my current situation. So thanks for making these videos!
I've always heard that Wing Chin is very basic and simple when it comes to martial art, but this style is quite complex and difficult in learning. There are so many different moves, it'd take years to learn. I know MMA people who can learn a lot in just weeks.
excellent explanation!ive learned a lot from you jin young, some of my friends can't understand this video, thinking they can still be caught with the punches using the tan saw through the center...in my opinion, tan saw works better through the center if fighter using it can utilize proper angling with the footwork...i hope i'm right! more power to you!
Lol hook punch...Anyone that throws a hook punch opens their center to a straight punch so if your fast enough no need to bridge or block just attack... Offencive defence !!!
dear pao, The problem you're encountering is due to incorrect structure. Also, you're not seeing that even though it is a "block", it's angled energy that is also deflecting. I also have a hard time with words so excuse me if I don't make any sense. Watch Ip Chun, and watch what happens when really big dudes try to push on him. He uses structure and feeling to "block" their energy. It looks like all he's doing is "stopping" them, but there's more to it. Feel it out, you'll see.
why does the hand stay open and not curl, you mentioned not curling the fingers even loosely, my friend asked me a few days ago and i couldnt answer. Thanks, great videos
well i practice it with a stronger person and it works. also to do that movement you need the correct position of legs and feet so you keep your balance stable (siu nim tao), and well you need to exercise your forearm, i follow up some instructions of a sifu here in my country.
maybe it works but i think that ignores some principles of wing chun technique, i'm a novice but i think that is wrong... sorry for my english i'm not able to express my opinion better than that
@robisgangsta1 one of the basics is also, why you actualy use the palm up/tan sau. hold your arm like that __| , with your fingers pointing up. now grab with your other arm, right above the ellbows were all the muscles are, dont know what its called. then move your hand, only your hand, so that the palm faces up.
your tan should attack his "structure" which means attacking his "shoulder line" and not chase his hand, at the same time your other hand should be striking your opponents centerline. hope that makes sense. peace!
You dont move the Tan sau out to the side, but you turn your body sideways to increase the reach of your punch, which comes at the same time as the tan sao when somebody tries to a looping punch. the tan sau still comes from the center line- You move out of the direction of the opponents punch by turning the body sideways. That is how I understood my sifu
@chinaboxer Although Our hands are a bit different, but i think our theory is similar.Just to expand on ur answer,ur right on that.Chasing hands or in this demo chasing the FIST means u lose ur own center guard,if we shoot at His center we would have stop his fist at the elbow level which moves slower than the fist, elbow pushed the fist will miss its punch. One thing about my TAN is that I was taught to focus on pulling the baby finger straight to generate the force, but thats just me.
if you move in closer and the "structure"that your opponent targets is next to his elbow, then he cannot strike because all the strike is concentrated in his fist or palm. a talkle is prevented because your opponent would have to completely wrap you with his arms but your strike is straight and if a point has the same endpoints but one is curved the strait line is shorter.
@v1o In Wing Chun, it's about simplicity. It's more effective to move in on the opponent with a serious of chain punches. When you step in, the hook punch will swing pass the back of your head, and then apply the ghost kick to the groin after the punches. Use the chain punches to pressure him and also to block his vision, so you can sneak in the ghost kick to the groin. your opponent will not see it coming. After that, fingerjab the eye socket, and an elbow to the head.
@Amethar Beginners are typically taught to rapidly shift into one with their tansau hand and punch simultaneously with the other. It all depends on your teacher I suppose.
tan sau should follow as close to your centerline as possible, it should not extend all the way out. the bend in the arm will vary, but roughly 1 1/2 fists distance between your elbow and chest is as far as you want to go out.
I'm relativly new to W.C. and I've only just discovered Chinaboxer. Just a quick comment to complement you on your teaching style, some great analogies that stick in the mind are a great aid to understanding rather than just memorising. It's like having a private lesson, keep it coming teach'.
Nice stuff. It all comes down to lut sao jek chun choi in the end, wouldn't you agree. To the people wtching these, he is VERY good at explaining an art that is so complex in its simplicity. Peace
it's awesome how you bow out to the camera after teaching , many of the instructors on Youtube do not . it shows you have respect for the Art as well as the viewer ; it makes me have respect for you . * bows *
i am training WING CHUNG now for 2 weeks. it is awesome because you dont need so much muscles and this is really good for me and it is really helpfull on the street. but you have to be quick and have to know the techniques
'Give me something', 'What time is it?'. I'm a Wing Chun beginner and those are proving VERY useful in helping me remember the Bong Sao and Tan Sao correctly. Thanks a lot - wish you were my Si-Fu. :)
hi jin, must the tan sau always be covering our centerline? The earlier part u said that but the later part u say tan sau is attacking opponent center. I am really blur. Please help and thanks in advance
If your tan sao is already poised to strike (see 2.22-2:30 or so) then just move it forward. It becomes a chop to the neck, and then you can follow up with whatever you need to do. I really like how he says "don't chase the person's hand, chase his center. " That stuck with me.
no, your tan sau doesn't have to always be covering your centerline. but with that said, you must have one hand occupying your centerline at all times.
i'm glad that you are using my videos as a reference that you can always go back to. sometimes it's frustrating when i keep getting asked the same question over and over because they haven't taken the time to view all my videos, where they can usually find the answer.
Great video, I love it! I've used this in sparring and it works! It protects my centre everytime.
I only have one question with regards to this. I've used tan sau against my opponents round house punches to then attack their centre! I also use it against my opponents front forward punches, deflect them to the side and again attack their centre. My question is how would I intercept an incoming upper cut punch to my jaws at close range? Tan sau would then not be appropriate so what could I use?
Focus on breaking your opponent's centerline, or retreat/evade from it. Manipulate the situation to fit your needs.
Try performing the uppercut you're referring to and see if you feel any openings or weaknesses of it that you could exploit if you were counterattacking.
Great video. The only thing I wonder about is when you are doing taan shouldn't you turn your body 45 degrees guiding the arm from your center line and in the same motion extending your other arm in a punch or palm strike taan da. As soon as you turn your ooponent doesn't have the chance to attack again because he is no longer facing your center line
That's oi tan, which is from the outside of the body to the centreline, where as this is noi tan, where you redirect from the centre to the outside of the body, if that makes sense =s

You have to remember to maintain the upper triangle. This triangle sets up a perimeter to defend your center. It is a wedge against attacks.
Attack and defend the center at the same time.
