@15iluvmcr yeah, but it's too 'pretty' or something. i like this version better, just because it was grittier. but that's why there are 2 versions, so people can listen to the one the want.
Reba's version sounds too much like a truck commercial. But I can't see anyone being able to match a record like this; the harder they try the further off the mark they'll get. Her singing has subtlety; it's only "powerful" when it has to be. The percussion is also full of surprises; you can almost feel that cockroach crawling across her shoe! It's probably more of a soul record than country, but it's great either way.
Freaking 27 thumbs up for this upload loderunner! Dubbed in (((STEREO))) Unlike all that MONO shit out there. If a stereo tune is available WHY upload a mono track of Anything!!
@radioace318 actually the mono mix is radically different, better mix, better bass... you see, the Lp track wasn't the one people heard back in the 60's and more attention was given to the 45 mix. The LP mix here is weak and radically worse than the 45... the 45 is funky and more soul than country.
I like this version because it's very frank- like she's sitting there telling you just what happened. But I like the other version too because it's more haunting and gothic. Idk I like both :P
@OohcoolProductions A lot of her songs are like that. Ode to Billy Joe is my favorite songs by her. I Don't know why she is not around anymore. She is older but looks in shape, and looks good. But you never see her.
I don't know on this one. The echo sounds really good with Bobbie's voice, and the arrangement is nice. But Reba's is a little more... Haunting, I guess I should say. Hers is louder, a little more moving, while Bobbie's is very frank, matter-of-fact. One thing is sure, the song is wonderful and both versions are amazing.
I like Reba's version better, but only because Reba has a more powerful voice and she also puts more emotion into her music. I do like this version though, i just like it in a different way. if you know what I mean..
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to go for Reba's version for this one. I know this is the original, but it lacks the haunting quality that Reba's version has and that I think is more appropriate for the subject matter of the song.
I know she is the original singer, but this version lacks something that Reba's has. I prefer Reba's version, and obviously Reba didn't make a mistake covering this song, it's her career signature song!
@CntryBoy90 Yeah because the dream of every artist is for their signature song to be a cover. -____- You obviously missed the point of the criticism. When Reba took the song over she changed too much. The song is not a song of strength, but a more sorrowful reflection which Gentry truly captures.
@mrmaulerman55446 I can't speak for every artist, but Reba has said this has always been her favorite song, so i think she IS happy that it is her signature song. I totally understand what you're saying, and i do think that Reba did change the cover, but I was just stating what version I like more.
Without giving away too much info hhmm,hhmm,...I"d like to say,,, 'I WORE MY MOMMAS ALBUM OUT'!!!andI 'I WORE OUT HER 2ND ALBUM TOO'!!! Thank You!! I listen to this track now,all these years later,,,I"m speechless!!
Until today, I only knew of TWO Bobbie Gentry songs. Ode To Billie Joe and her cover of Son of a Preacher Man. After hearing this, I want to hear MORE. I consider myself a soul lady..... this has SOUL. x
I worked with a woman who was 3 years older than I, and still insisted Reba was the original singer. She eventually learned when I offered to bet $100 on something, she better back off! I wasn't even 10 when this song charted, but I love it and "Ode to Billy Joe"
@sheenque I grew up listening to Fancy and I still LOVE it. No one will ever be able to do it like Bobbie Gentry!!! I also still have my original 45 record and it still plays great.
I have read some about there being plans for a film production of "fancy". That would be great! All of us boomers, who cherished this song, would break down the doors to see such a film. HOLLYWOOD! ARE YOU LISTENING????
The writers interpretation of her own work is usually superior. Thats the case here with Gentry's gritty r&b flavored soulful vocals giving this powerful song the lament and love of a great dramatic story. It truly rivals her, Ode to Billie Joe, for depth and power. A masterpiece.
Not sure what it is. IMO Bobbys song has something Reba's is lacking. I can't put my finger on it. More soul? Reba's is maybe over produced a tad? Hell, I like em both but this one just a tad more.

Idk, its ok. But the Reba version has just more of a....Idk. This version just doesnt have....the spark. The emotion Gentry is singing with seems kinda...tired. Rebas has more headstrong energy.
THIS IS A TIMELESS CLASSIC ,THIS (THE ORIGINAL) HAS A VIBE THAT CANT BE FOUND IN THE REBA MAC. VERSION AND OTHER FANCY COVERS.THE COVERS ARE STILL KOOL TO HEAR.
Better then Reba, simple as that. Disagree and you're wrong.

Reba made two mistakes in her career-- recording Fancy and Cathy's Clown, neither fit her voice and vocal style
