its just a gaelic name , son of eoin , could be Irish or scottish gaelic . The w would have been an english invention anyway , to help the english pronounce the name they anglicised
the gaelic name for Lydon is Ó Loideáin , again a very common name around Galway and the west of Ireland . Again that means son or descendant of Loideáin . The english made people change their names to anglicised versions because they were too dumb to spell or pronounce them . Seems your as Irish as Brian Boru .

Uh, dragonkingofthestars, ever read about how Ireland split? As I recall, there were 6 counties that broke off and became northern Ireland, and there were 26 counties left that make up modern day Ireland. Now do you understand what he meant by 26+6=1?

OMG, is it true? Your a manx? I knew that there are manxs and this is a celtic nation, but I dind't know any concret informations about it. I've heard that tha last man who has spoken this language died in the 1970's (I was on an irish music concert, there was it told from the musitians). Is it really so? Or can you speak manx? The Irish force was probably a good bit smaller, but the Saxons were mostly raw recruits. Also, the terrain of Glenmalure was extremely inhospitable. This meant the Saxons couldn't keep their line together, but for O'Byrne's men, it meant there was ample opportunity to set up an ambush - which is how the battle began. It quickly turned into a rout, however, and O'Byrne was in no mood to allow a retreat. Most of the dead were probably run down while trying to flee. Erin go Bragh!

I've been listening to almost nothing but Irish rebel music for the last few months - but I was unaware of this song until today. My favorite version is by the Davitts which I downloaded from i-tunes. Could this be the best song ever written? I can't recall ever having heard such a rousing song.

Fantastic song. I'm English with Irish ancestry (and from Liverpool, a strong Irish foundation city) and I have nothing but love, admiration and respect for the Irish people and culture.
The British did some horrible things in the past, but every nation has we should remember.
Don't judge all the English on what some of our greedy monarchs/commanders did in the past. Soliders didn't have a choice in those days, it was fight for your lord/master or your families starve and die.
