Does anyone get the Idea that this is a song of the joy of release from loneliness? Ever been horribly lonely for a long time? That person walks in and there's a shaft of light from Heaven. Of Etta James you can believe the song rings true to her. In Byonce's case the lyrics just do not work. It's like the Queen of England singing "Underneath the Arches" and us being willing to believe she has any notion of what it is like to have to sleep underneath the railway arches rather than in her Palaces and Castles. It's a good version anyhow but she's not short of desirable men to be with.

i just listened to Already Gone and Halo back to back and i'm sorry but I don't see what the big deal is. These are two completely different songs, sung by two completely different artists. Both songs are good in their own right and to judge them against one another is unfair to both artists, as they excel in their chosen genre and do what they do well.
Full respect for this heartfelt and great rendition of this timeless classic by the great Etta James..no-one can sing it like she did. All songs are made for singing and everybody can sing them in their own way. This is great. Thumbs up for Beyonce!

@huggerz1010 ok...its fine if you like etta better...but I'd like to point out that you contradicted yourself in your comment...by saying that Beyonce is not up to Etta's quality you're comparing them...They're different singers from different eras; comparing them is a waste of time...we can appreciate both w/out belittling one or the other :)

@cboncklis U may think that judging from her performances but she has a performing self(the whole strong,sexual Sacha Fierce thing) and a private self and they're obviously very different.When u see her being interviewed, she's so down to earth and genuine and is really grateful for her success. She also gives so much credit to those who inspired her.Watch the Live Fashion Rocks 2008 video and see what she says about Etta. Much nicer than how mean Etta James was (At Last isn't even Etta's SONG)

@slayer3to10 yes, but the soul is more important than the power. Etta James really expresses the feelings contained in the melody and words. Beyonce does it a splendid way in "halo", but not here. In my opinion she would have done it if the song was hers, but here she didn't wanted to sound like the original. Beyonce is able to have power AND soul...

Beyonce is a vocal beast! She has the most dynamic voice of our generation, period and she isn't even my favorite singer, but I know music and pure outstanding talent when I see/hear it. Etta James should be honored and proud, period!

i just listened to Already Gone and Halo back to back and i'm sorry but I don't see what the big deal is. These are two completely different songs, sung by two completely different artists. Both songs are good in their own right and to judge them against one another is unfair to both artists, as they excel in their chosen genre and do what they do well.

Beyoncé es increible, Me gustan algunas de sus canciones, por ej Listen, cuando la cantó en vivo para el show de Oprah. PERO, no me gusta que cante los clásicos de los cuales Christina Aguilera ya ha hecho covers y grandiosos... Como esta canción, A Song For You, Y lo que mas me molesta es que Tras de que va a cantar la misma canción, tiene que ponerse un vestido ROJO parecido al de Christina... Y.. ya vieron el peinado?!!

@DorrisDiaz acttually beyonce was asked to do this in a film, where she actually had to play etta, then asked to sing this song for obamas first dance. both you can youtube. she's not trying to BE etta, and if you actually research beyonce, you can see she says repetively that etta is an idol of hers. she loves the song, and wants to show that, in her tallented way, by voice.
