You are putting them together as if these three things happen all together and make generalized assumptions. I see territories as a concept that do not assume national border. When I said "the country," I referred to something that had border.

U.S. border was very differently in 18th century than now. When you said anti-US, therefore you assume a ahistorical boundary. The Chinese reform and the U.S. reform period went hand in hand. U.S. needed the labor power in lower services sectors. China mass produced but needed consumers. They went hand in hand. The so called China's corrupted officials in the 70s forward are product of the reform. This triggered the June 4th movement, but it did not address why corruption took place to begin with. If the reform was to be criticized, the student would not call for more freedom but equal rights for all workers.

The U.S. 60s forward saw deregulation and liberalization of the market. The U.S. state did help to create a deregulated state creating a condition for investment and productive capitals. This corresponded with the second migrations from Asia, particularly the Chinese. 90s saw more Chinese in the U.S. Mexicans came in as well. What happen to these migrant workers? The boss use them and pit them against each other. This drove wage wages, and some workers were not paid at all.

If you look at the conditions of the migrant workers in the U.S. (post reform), they were not any better than the mainland workers. Concepts like freedom, democracy, and human rights U.S. embraces could not even stand on its own feet. The Chinese Government is decisive to stop this so-called "democracy". How could a country progress if every now and then there are civil unrest, riot etc? Generally, the Chinese Government had done well. It is a pity that those people who followed the strike blindly or merely know the concept of demoracry not knowing the element, die in the crackdown.

Well normally it wouldn't come to riots and that sort of thing, if the government treated its people well. But obviously it isn't in China. So people react in a way that they regard adequate to their despair and situation. Besides the Chinese Government might be doing a lot of good for China's economy but economic growth is not a guarantee for good living conditions. Most of China's population doesn't profit from the economic boom so I understand their frustration very well.

i disagree with you on the point of the use of violence in suppressing the riot. there would have been different ways in dealing with the students. there were people following the bourgeois student blindly. democracy does not necessary get rid of corruptions. corruption itself came out from the reform, which was a LIBERAL REFORM (deregulation, loosening of the central goven etc). Liberal reform in itself would have led to a "democratic" turn, which is a call to reinforce the market economy
