  • I used to get up at this hour to deliver newspapers. In the miserable dead of winter. Before the miserable dead of school. I have a legitimate reason to despise this time.

  • I just reached the point at which I actually felt REALLY tired, checked the clock......4AM! and it reminded me of this video from years ago, I chuckled to myself and came to find it.

  • 4 in the morning, the time I get up for work...

  • If you Google "4 in the Morning" now, you get 8 hits of Lady Gaga and 2 hits of this TED talk.

What has the world come to.

  • Comment removed

  • @MousePADDING Actually 4 In The Morning is a song by Gwen Stefani, not Lady GaGa, so of course you'd get more hits.

Why not Google 4am next time.

  • This talk is a brilliant answer to all you conspiracy theorists out there. Be careful the connections you draw!

  • Woke up at 4:01 this morning.

  • it is interesting how this guy hybridizes his manner of speaking with African American patterns

  • is he joking?

  • Rofl.

  • 4 a.m. is also the time that when you wake up, you realize "Aw shit. I can't sleep and there is nothing on tv."

  • A comment on IroningMyUnderwear's video sent me here.

  • I was listening to a song, which i paused, to watch this, and when I unpaused it it said '4 o clock in the morning..' lol

  • it was 4 in the morning when I finished watching this video and for a second I thought the time has come (4 am) when I shit in my pants for the first time..

  • thanks to this talk I now am ultra aware when a song or something says 4 in the morning

  • Absolute brilliance!

  • its 4 in the moprning

  • hmm i stumbled upon this at 4 a.m

  • This poster currently has 826 videos. My birthday is August 26th. Coincidence?

I was born at 4 in the morning... Eastern Standard Time,

PHEW, thank God I've lived on the west coast all my life.

  • That was kinda stupid.

  • That's just too cool.

  • fuuhhhh it's 4 am.

  • I timed this so I finish watching it at exactly this time, 4:00 AM.

  • @BigDodonga Facepalm.

  • Like like

  • damn 20 more min to 4 in the morning, still watching ted talks

  • This is a perfect way of teaching people about the logical fallacies of data mining.

  • I like this video. Thank you for your sharing. Hope to see next your video.

  • Sharpshooter Fallacy! Nonetheless entertaining.

  • I'm watching this... at 4am haha. I just looked. It's a little creepy.

  • 4 am is just an evil time. like 230 am

  • Someone give this man a Nobel Prize!

  • yea, early morning is the time of night people constantly seem to stay up around until

typically the early waking times were 5-6, earliest, and latest sleeping time often would be 2?

you can't farm at night, you can party at night, the rest is just word play and brilliant :P

  • of course it's unadulterated bullshit. Thats his whole point!

  • Four in the morning is "vargtimmen." (Swedish for "Hour of the Wolf") According to Swedish folklore this is the time of the day when most people are born or die.

  • @cthulhu63 Really?

  • "It's 4:03, and I can't sleep without you next to me"

"Waiting, watching the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop"

  • Lately, I've been going to bed after 4 am.

  • lol just listenin to Eminem 3:am, i noticed he says your walking down a horror corridoor, its almoast 4 in the morning, Rives has a point, its everywhere

  • I take it as a satire on those people that make all sorts of connections and think it is some kind of code... (watch?v=7VBMjVBjLVg, for instance)

aside from being an entertaining diversion, of course.

  • i was partially to three till i saw this

    love you john rives

  • I am amused that I just realized that I started watching his stuff at 4:30 in the morning... wow... But its true. Midnight is not that harsh of a time anymore.

  • Rives is such an amazing and talented poet! I love his spoken word!!!!!

  • i watched this because it's 4:27...! awesome.

  • hes a great speaker, wow.

  • I don't really know what he is trying to prove, but he was pretty good at linking together some pretty unrelated stuff.

  • @CTom343 Then you got the point, its just a piece of performance art

  • The intro music to these older TED videos roughly approximates the Doppler effect, in a situation where Danny Elfman is running past you at high speed.

  • @TeagueChrystie Best. Observation. Ever.

  • Pure, unadulterated genius!

  • This is some No Agenda shiet :P

  • He says "trope"

    win

  • What the HELL was he trying to prove?

  • That you can make a "conspiracy theory" out of just about anything, if you're clever enough. It's quite brilliant actually.

  • Interesting but the whole thing seemed like an essay without a thesis.

  • I'm not sure the analogy holds. This is more like a theatrical presentation than an academic paper. When watch a movie or a play, do you expect the writer to come out beforehand and tell you what they are trying to prove? I think the point can be divined from the tone, style and content of the presentation.

  • That life shouldn't be taken so seriously...

  • NOTHING! It's a joke, come on! It's pretty much the same way Dan Brown constructed his novel :P

  • 5 o'clock is when morning starts and the darkest hour is just before sunrise. I'm also reminded of Sarah Kane's last play, just before she killed herself - "4.48 psychosis", because she used to wake up at that time and had her "clear hour" because it was the only time her depression medication was out of her system. It *is* a time that is kinda unreal and when I was a child I was sorta afraid of seeing it on the clock. But then, I was afraid of clocks anyway.

  • This guy's delivery style is incredible!

    Musical.

    Rythmic.

As a public speaker myself I like to see (should that be hear?) someone who can deliver well, He's a master!

There's a really poetic quality to it.

Hm - as I typed this I checked the video description. I see he's a poet (previously I'd only read the title) so that actually isn't so surprising.

His delivery is still fantastic though.

    :D

  • when i was watching this, it was 4am in the morning in taipei

  • extraordinarily engaging!

  • WOW! Amazing... I'm writing this in my hotel room at a business trip and it's just a few minutes to 4 in the morning. How did it happen? Freaky

  • i found a site with college pranks and this as one of them

*Set the 4:00 am wake up alarm in the victim's alarm clock and hide it in the corner of the closet and remember to sleep in your room.

  • Rives is such a cool guy. I never would've ever noticed. I think that this is just hilarious. He is such a genius.

  • Rives is so freakin' amazing.

  • I never knew the implications of "4 in the morning" when I wrote this blog post of mine (link below) on 11 May last year (2008). It just came so naturally to me! Perhaps there's something more to the phrase "4 in the morning" than what meets the eye!

Please note, you have to piece together the link. As YouTube doesn't allow me to post it directly, I used bit ly to shorten it. Go to bit(dot)ly and append 3PoAS4 to the home page URL.

  • You are aware that the earth rotates aren't you?

  • Kidding dude, i understand that time zones jump by full hours, its just i posted my message on the hour :P

  • i thought your comment was quite clever. I'm still kind of shocked by that rotating Earth thing, though. You never know what you'll learn from a TED video!

  • Damn, almost 4am.

  • genius

  • I bet he wrote this whole thing at 4 in the morning.

  • At 4 am I blastheme why does he need to keep me up?

  • WOW!

i clicked THE ULTIMATE LIST autoplay, and the talk JUST before i automatically arrived at this one this was Tony Robbins' TedTalk WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO, AND HOW WE CAN DO IT BETTER, where I commented on YouTube to this one asshole - who thought Tony Robbins was bullshit - how my life changed one day for the better from that so-called bullshit...

    ...at 4am. NO LIE!

  • damn, it's almost 4 in the morning...

  • At every Used concert I've ever been too, the line where Bert stops singing and points the mic at the audience is "its four oclock in the fuckin' morning"

  • Wow this is crazy. I wrote a series of poems last year at 4 am. I like the concepts here

4 am is the last hour of the day for me as well and when i wrote those poems, it was where I felt I could write with no restrictions, no regard and speak from my soul.

  • Eminem's song called 3 am- "You're walkin down a horror corridor, it's almost 4 in the morning and you're in a, nightmare its horrible, right there's the coroner"

  • lol. frikkin genius.

  • He's not a mind-fuck! You're a fucked mind.

  • Hahaha I love 4:00 in the morning. That's when you know everything is still and there's no one to bother you or interrupt your thoughts.

  • the strange thing is... I just found this clip. What time is it? 4:06 am December 19 or "4 in morning at the end of december"

  • 4:18 am

    LOOOOOOOLLLLL

  • I scoffed at the descriptiong, but this really IS lyrical origami. It all.. comes together.

  • Me too! I almost wasn't going to watch this video because of my perceived pretentiousness of "lyrical origami", plus I'd just watched his internet poem which I just did not like at all... but this was awesome.

  • That was badass

  • Now this is what happens when someone actually puts effort and thought into what they say.

  • I work past 4 am sometimes.

  • Creepy!

  • I discovered this at 3 pm. (Oslo, GMT +1)

However... This means that in on Christmas Island, and atoll belonging to The Republic of Kiribati, the very same country one of my former lecturers in journalism was infatuated by, an atoll where the UK performed nuclear tests during the 50's, the same decade my parents were born, an atoll where the second biggest city has 1881 inhabitants, the same number I often call to find someone's phone number...

    It's 4 am.

  • i waked up at 4 in the morning
