This is class - I even bought it on DVD. I like the fact that the Giant is that bloke from the 'Carry On' films, and the 'Haunted Wood' takes them about 8 seconds to walk through.
I used to love this movie, to be honest this movie would do better as a TV serial during the 80's since some of the characters in there are quite interesting to know.
I punched a bloke in the face once for saying Hawk The Slayer was rubbish.. But what I should've said was "Dad, you're right. Let's give Krull a try, and we'll discuss it later".
I think these guys were trying to make a western, i mean there are so many similarities, magnificent seven like group, Sergio Leone style showdowns and music
@johnhamilton08 You could be right. when this movie came out there was a complete sub culture going on...Dragon Slayer etc. based on the medievil/dungeon and dragon stuff. It was followed more closely by Bakshi's Fire and Ice and Legend. I do remember having to see it though. When geared to the thirteen year old mind it was pretty cool. This is litterally the second time I have seen any part of it. Again, I have to agree with you.
@godshackeysack1 also this wasn't me trying to say it was a bad thing, I think that's one thing that makes it interesting this is one of my guilty pleasures.
Got this one on DVD. Brings back a lot of memories. I always think of the late Bernard Bresslaw as a Carry On actor, but his role as "Gort" in this was pretty action packed. "Crow" was always pretty rapid with a bow. Very much liked his pure white arrows. Interesting to find out what "Hawk the Hunter" is going to be like? I've heard the great Tom Hardy is involved.
I was like you once. Blonde hair. Scraggy little beard. Child like ears. Full of beans and spunk. I let my principles get in the way sometimes. I punched a bloke in the face once for saying "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish.
@Harborx It's not that rare, it's available on DVD in the UK.My brother liked all these sword & sorcery flicks, I wasn't really into them that much.I think Krull was probably my fave of the bunch.
Loved the clearly Ennio Morricone inspired western music. It's so spaghetti. You forgot the "best" part though, the silly string that shoots from the witch's cane!
@AbsintheInChains No idea what a "silver buscuit" is, but it's still released in 1980. So says IMDb, Wikipedia, and the clip itself has the Copyright showing as MCMLXXX, which is 1980.
I was looking for a Hawk the Slayer Tribute/Montage wont find it here. Music is good quality but you cut it at inappropriate moments. It stops and starts, you speed up some scenes etc. Cool you were doing a "speedrun"... guess my wait for a legendary homage to one of the all time great old skool fantasy films continues......
Just goes to show ya... if you want to be a truly effective evil dude.. make sure not to wear an ill-fitting helmet into combat with Hawk the Slayer!!!
Yeah, I taped this movie off TV a ton of years ago.... wore the damn thing out.... finally found it on DVD, and I love it.... one of my all-time favorite movies EVER!!
This film has it all! The camp soundtrack, has-been actors who look like 80's pop stars, one who looks like spocks long lost brother and a left over from the carry-on days makes this film great. Then layer one some silly string and glowing paint means you have an avatar beater anyday! See how it glows lol.
I love this movie. I think they did a damn good job on the budget they had, imagitive, funny, action packed fun loving piece of sword and sorcery cheese!
this is film is hilarious man, jack palance is bloody brilliant! if you're skint and want a laugh with yer mates on a friday night then get the beers and watch!
The soundtrack is especially billiant-does anyone know if you can get the soundtrack?
Glory to those gods then for it is no word of a lie (unless it's a VERY elaborate one). Tom Hardy is set to succeed Jack Pallance in the role with various others being speculated over for the role of Voltan. "Hawk the Hunter" they're calling it..
@kuribayashi84 Sadly I now have to give you the message of suck. That was two years ago and still no word, I'd love to be wrong but it looks like it's been shelved.
My brothers and I adored this film in all its glorious atrocity when we were kids in the 80s. You've done a wonderful job here - particularly with the little Hawk theme tune and the Hunchback's incoherence, the subtitle touch had me in stitches.
I would also have added Jack Palance's "You should never have been allowed to dig yourself out of the earth!" crack to the dwarf.
WTF ? Since the special effects came out of a Cornflakes packet (along with some of the actors by the looks of things, the exception being Jack Palance (God rest his soul)) as a 12 year old kid this was entertaining fun and still has a kitsch value.Liked the theme tune too.
I saw this at the local ABC when I was 14 and sad to say, rather liked it. My only defence is that it was a double bill with that other great movie, Saturn 3, which is about an elderly Kirk Douglas boffing Farrah Fawcett. Against Kirk's nude scenes and the sheer ick factor, anything would've been preferable.
Sped (Declan Mulholland) was the original human Jabba and his HTS lines go something like (pre editing), "Welcome! Welcome, friends! I have some fine slaves for you to buy today. They don't call Sped the finest trader on the River Shale for nothing! Play square with me and I'll play square with you. But play foul with Sped and my god help you!"
That's from memory (long ago) so I'm not 100% about it.
my dad took to the pictures to see this when it came out, was about 7 i guess, thought it was kick ass then as it is now but strangely my wife doesn't.....women hey?!
