LOVE this heart of gold ship WAAAAAY better than that grey bubble piece of shite...in that PIECE OF SHTIE MOVIE!!... THAT MOVIE SHAT IN THE FACE OF DOUGLAS ADAMS AND HIS FANS...COMPLETE SHITE.....THIS BBC SERIES (LIKE THE RADIO SHOW AND BOOK) IS PURE BRILLIANCE....its amazing that bbc had .000000003% of the budget of that clusterfuck of a movie...and it was aweesome!
All right, I'm very old but I still have a sense of humour and a little taste. Hitchhikers's Guide remains one of the funniest productions ever and Sandra Dickinson still turns my very old crank more than the remake.
this show is way better than anything the yanks could ever do. It is not about the effects or props, it is about the underlying humor, which here beats everything including Blakes 7 !!! :-P
Someone help me out here. In a universe where apparently you can travel the galaxy using a special drive that runs on tea, how is it that Arthur Dent can't find a drop of the stuff after he leaves Earth?
How much has Britain lagged behind the US in terms of special effects for TV? This show came out in the 80s but half of the effects are equal to or possibly worse than the original Star Trek which was made in the mid-60s.
@Theroha no commercials! the BBC was spending most of its cash on news and such, so slightly niche entertainment like this was made on a budget of a couple of quid an episode
Marvin the Depressed robot; shows SIRIUS CYBERNETICS CORPORATION is a depressed bunch of people. Advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) is based upon neural networks and learning machines, this means they actually learn what you show them, based upon the input conditions of sensors and design. Marvin is depressed, because his manufacture company is depressed. But Marvin is still an over-the-top robot in service of life forms, and working it out, seeking God's apology for existing.
The invention of the Improbability Drive is based upon a physics assessment of the Universe based upon known proved equations; that creates a possible assessment of the Universe. Actually what we are is 7-dimention to 10-dimension creatures, and we exist in a subspace of our known, accessible, dimensions; therefore, the Heart Of Gold simply accesses all known Universe for a destination, but no looking back; when Aurthur left Earth, he never went back to the same one, infinite conditions.
@WOWJBEOWULF i always thought it was three dimensional beings traveling through the 4th dimension (at a constant speed) living in an 11 dimensional universe as shown in M theory. and at least the part about the clothes is actually SOMEWHAT realistic, in that it is VERY VERY unlikely that someones underwear could teleport, but IS possible. physics nerds ftw!!!
@42connorzielinski42 The Improbability Drive simply chooses its future, by collapsing the probability wave; flash for science fiction audience, but destination is by probability. What is added is the Pan-Dimensional features; meaning there are many dimension perspectives of the Universe; and when Zaphod Beeblebrox signed the Earth destruction order for a hyperspace byway, it was for all Earths--truly self-absorbed.
@42connorzielinski42 its possible to teleport a single person if you can liberate all the energy in the Galaxy (i think it was). got that nugget from a new scientist:)
@ReelBigStreetlight yeah I thought Mos Def was better for the role, although I did love this when I was a kid. Sam Rockwell stole the show in the film, he was brilliant.
The Trillian here isn't that bad, actually. Of course, Zooey Deschanel is so much better (and more beautiful as well ^^).
But it's nice that in the Quintessential Phase of the radio play Sandra Dickinson (who plays Trilian in the TV series) once again takes over the role of Trisha. Arthur makes a comment, about how she suddendly appears to be blonde and american as opposed to the Trillian he first met, who was brunette and english. ^^
Unfortunately this Marvin does look antiquated compared to the movie version. Then again what it mean when his says "his brain is the size of a planet"?
@edblaster2000 The funny thing is when I read the book I always forgot Zaphod had two heads, and when it came up it always ruined the image of Zaphod I had in my mind. Somehow three hands and two heads are very difficult to imagine. Perhaps that's why I they did Zaphod the way he was in the movie. It's fun to watch the series though I wouldn't mind a remake. I know, I know, but still.
The actress who plays Trillian was once married to Peter Davison(5th Doctor), and their daughter married David Tennant! It's a sci fi family!!!
