  • This is the best arrangement I've heard; he has great wind control and a beautiful tone. Great job!

  • :)

  • amazing song.

  • Wynton has always said taht "classical training is fundamental" You can really hear it here!!

  • He bring out the subtleties a lot better than me and his sixteenth notes are so clear. Great dynamics. BETTER THAN US ALL

  • eye liek et

  • I like Marsalis, but in this tune he isn't true to the score. The sixteenth notes he plays are too fast and not articulated cleanly. I'm sure he's not losing sleep over it though.

  • @Nabokov50 Mr. Marsalis, whom I've met, by the way...is an artist. He has more than earned the right to interpret any piece he chooses to play in the manner and style he chooses to play it and composers, living and dead are delighted that he does so.

  • This work was done by the Boston Pops on the album "A Tribute to Leroy Anderson" and also in one of their July 4th concerts. To say that it was done by Wynton Marsalis is a falsehood

  • This is very sweet piece of music. I just got notes for this, I am really looking forward to play it.

  • somehow this does not sound like him... idk how to explain. but its still AWSOMEE

  • I love this piece so much that I'm playing it as my leavers pieces. So excited.

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • 1:35 lol my tiny solo..

When I first got the song, I thought that entire thing was the solo, because of how little 2nd trumpets play....

  • I finally mastered it, and I must say, this is an outstanding piece!

  • 1:11 is the part where i play and i don't know why but it's hard....

  • @ColdRider112 Because when you have a mute in it requires more air to get out the notes clean and clear. I'd suggest working on the part without the mute first until you have it flawless, then put it in always keeping in mind "more air". Not necessarily louder of course lol, just make sure you make your lips buzz.

  • @Prochopmeister Alright thanks for the tip!

  • This is not Wynton people, it is wynton's picture. Needs to be changed.

  • I really love this song, but what kind of a mouthpiece does he have in that picture?

  • @MaclarenW86 it's made by monette, they're really quite expensive. and i think this one is attached to the trumpet, but im not sure.

  • When I see Wynton Marsalis, I see consummate genius---not warts. 'Trumpeter's Lullaby' is so well done (with magnificent support from the muted trumpets) it still brings tears to my eyes as it did when I was in prep school and Brother Leroy was playing it.

  • Thank you Wynton for recording this-and setting a standaed for not only trumpet spitters [affectionately] but H.S. band directors and their bands-u're the man, man!

  • really love this piece-audiences love it-shows off a trumpeter singing a lullaby to the band-and they respnd-if done well-the audience can hear the conversation they're having-Wynton gets the job done well.

  • Im learning this song and its such a good song

  • This is Wynton Marsalis PERFECTING Leroy Anderson.

  • dave rocha sent me here

  • I have the original Leroy Anderson LP's -- double album. This is Leroy Anderson.

  • W.O.W.

  • This is definitely one of my favorite Trumpet songs :)

  • Excellent, of course, but I wish didn't double tongue, but use a fast accurate single tongue, a la Mendez.

  • Incredible sensitivity and control. Wynton, you are a master !!! musician, artist, performer.

  • The problem with the Ken Burns "documentary" wasn't that it was controversial. The problem was that it played fast and loose with the facts. The keystone of documentary-making is fact-checking, and Burns' effort gave more weight to popular myths than to fact. EG- only one grainy photograph exists of Buddy Bolden. This is balogna. Much of the story about Strange Fruit was likewise popular balogna. The "documentary" was so riddled with b.s. that it was painful to watch.

  • @gsmonks

Interesting comment on the Ken Burns documentary. Keith Olbermann made the same observation on the Burns documentary on baseball.

  • @lbccvikes It doesn't help Marsalis' credibility when reiterates old stories that were never true. Cassandra Wilson added a real gem of a clunker- that story of Thelonious Monk's trying to imply "those smaller intervals". Utter b.s.. Monk was NOT trying to imply quarter tones. It was just a stupid theory put out there by some stupid bystander back in the 50's or early 60's. But the story was very popular, and a lot of people who should damn-well know better bought into it.

  • a beautiful piece of work

  • Sorry, cats. No way that's Wynton. Nice try, though. Keep practising! Ha, ha!

  • love you wynton marsalis :), your amazing and a true inspiration to us all, beautiful sound on your monette trumpet and mouthpiece!!!!!!

  • Loved every second of this, 5stars baby!

  • My father's favorite song. Thank you for posting.

  • hehe i have to play this for a solo at some contest

    so far i like it

  • All state piece for tomorrow =D

  • masterpice :)

  • Absolutely gorgeous!

  • this song's great but.... DAMN YOU SLEIGH RIDE!!!!!

  • wow that is great , wow

  • Beautiful and soft - the lovliest version of this lovely piece I've ever heard. Captures the dreaminess perfectly.

  • Very melodic, not very rhythmical ... enjoyed it, with that reservation.

  • Mistrzostwo swiata!

  • Flawless...not live.

  • Uhmmmm... lovely (-:

  • King Trumpet

  • a great song played wonderfully!

  • Doesn't got any better than that!

  • Wow

  • Controversial??????

  • @kaunasprince He has quite controversial views on jazz. You can look it up on wiki

  • I randomly found this and I love it and I really want to play it.

  • @rbs600 Make that the two of us!

  • Beautiful...

  • There is a god.

  • This seems to be the best of the lot avaiable. Acoustics are good. Of course Marsalis' trumpeting is fine. This seems to be very close to the original Leroy Anderson recording I used in '62-'63 to back up our station's sign-off message. (WSBB, New Smyrna Beach, FL, 1230 a.m.) The 1st 1/2 of the recording was a perfect fit. Dave.

  • I like this song! :)

  • Beautiful Clip. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Thank you, malawolf85 ... Marsalis is a master... and Leroy Anderson would smile widely and cheer for this marvelous trumpet master. ThankTHANKyou. =Johnny.

  • would this be considered a lyrical or technical piece?

  • Beautiful song. Leroy Anderson is by far one of the best composers ever.

  • Comment removed

  • What CD is this on? I want to buy it.

  • just did this for my grade 6 rcm exam :) got a 92 :D

  • i learned this in 5th grade...jk listen to petite peice concertante and im in 8th grade and i have to do that this saturday

  • I played this for solo and ensemble in 8th grade, its damn challenging.

  • @christofrico i did the same thing you are riht i practiced my ass off on this

  • Al Hirt gave Wynton his first trumpet when he was only six years of age! It makes you think that Al Hirt sensed something in young Wynton. What a difference a musical instrument can be to a youngster who has a heart for music.

  • haha go al. he can see the future

  • I understand, but in that case I mean that he plays them as 64th notes, because he plays them four times faster than the 8th notes (16th notes in 4/4). I might be wrong, but I've listened to it a few times and that's what I hear. Maybe if you compare how he plays them Mendez's version, you'll see what I mean.

  • @johnsurs22 it is merely his interpretation of the song, not that he's playing it wrong. and personally i like it too :)

  • I don't know why but Marsalis makes the sixteenth notes 32nd notes, leaving some space to compensate. It's obviously still well done. After all, it's Marsalis, but these things bug me a little.

  • A lot of trumpet players do this make extra room in the piece. Also, I think it's very suiting for the trumpet and makes the piece sound less "muddy" or more "lively".

    Peace, Rev. EG Wilson

  • A masterpiece!

  • Wynton's performance is gorgeous.

  • im in 9th grade and this is my solo it is an AMAZING peace it sounds beautful .. i hope i can make it sound this good

  • @trumpeter95 You'll get there :) The lead trumpet in my band class did.

  • Note well Wynton's daring changes of tempo, the way he steps back and forward, lays down, butters the beat, plays the silences with his breath.

  • it 's just so beautiful.

  • my in grade 8 and i'm the only girl out of all the brass instruments and i got this solo. it is sooo amazing!

  • I'm playin this solo this year!!!! its gonna be tight yo!! lol

  • trumpets rock!!!!!!!!

  • @Lulisu100 YES THEY DO!!!!!

  • @Lulisu100 vote up, yet imma tuba

  • Oh boy! This is going to be my Solo this year~ I can't wait.

  • This is my favorite version also - really captures the spirit of Anderson's composition

  • @lilyvonschtuppp I love u

  • This is my favourite version on youtube

  • the wonderful piece

  • I saw him last week, a legend worth seeing...

  • I saw him last night

  • This was so much fun to play

  • Amazing.thx 4 sharin'

  • Majik47, this is one of many 'popular' compositions by the classic middle-America composer, Leroy Anderson (Sleigh Ride, Typewriter Song, Bugler's Holiday, Syncopated Clock and about 100 more - all schmaltz, all very easy listening - he probably invented the term)

  • Thanks. I was getting worried here :-)

  • Tacky? It is written by American composer Leroy Anderson in 1949. It is a very popular and beautiful work. Where's your taste man?

    Chuck Mangione I assume.

  • Can we settle on schmaltzy, then?

  • I LOVE this song - especially from :47 to 1:00 :)

  • i was very inspired by hes approach to this selection, :D

  • I love this tune and have played it on my trumpet!! Its just so beautiful.

  • there not triplets just 16th notes =] but i can see how ud think that. i played this in my orchestra.

  • Indeed there are only 16th, but he plays them as doublets. Which sounds alot better than pure 16th. It's just too bad I can't do doublets that good.

  • wtf are doublets its called double tonguing not 'doublets'

  • I think he meant duplets, which make MUCH more sense given the context that he said it in. ie, comparing 16th and triplets.

  • a doublet is when there are 2 1/16s notes next to eachother... he double tounges them but there called doublets retard... learn ur facts

  • Learn to spell.

  • I have never heard of them, but that is no reason for calling us retards. That is just impolite.

  • An orchestra came to my school and played this but he messed up i think it still sounded good

  • I love the way he just lightly touches those triplets! What genius!

  • I will be playing this with the Huntsville Symphony Youth Orchestra next Sunday, I will try to post a video of it.

  • we're playing this for our band performance tomorrow!

this song is soo pretty :)

  • Wonderful, soft, flowing, peaceful, thank you!

  • simply beautiful

  • incredible. but check out this utterly charming and musical performance by this young guy named Anthony Bellino. You'll find it on the search results. He's in a spotlight on the thumbnail.

  • What a lovely little piece. His tone is liquid, and so dark... wonderful.

  • Im playing this for solo ensamble soonn =( scaryyy!! i was playing it like 1000 times faster than this... shit, i thought it was a really fast song.. lol. guess not! =[

    ahh scaryyy lol

  • I use a 3C and find it to be great

  • i love this song. that was great!

  • the end is just lovely!

  • i dont see what u guys are so nervous about, i maen this songs not easy, but its definitely not that challenging

  • i got to play in a week for auditions.....

    Shit!!

  • :/

i have to play this for solo/ensemble

  • Same, what grade you in? I'm in 8th and I'm scared as hell. I still have months to clean it, but I still have a really long way to go. And knowing me, there's always the constant threat of almost puking on stage.

  • 9th..just got the solo this week and solo/ensemble is March 3rd.

    :/

  • Good luck.

  • thanks.

    you too.

  • lol dont be nervous. i played it as my solo too. i got really nervous in the middle and messed it up, but i kept goin and even though i messed up quite a lot i was given a superior because i followed the style and rhythms even when i messed up

  • i just got it and i have to play it in a week so im scared as hell

  • Wow. I wish you the best of luck.

  • thanks

  • you have to play this song? So do I. I'm quite nervous. I can play most of it, but i can never reach the high notes, like the high A's. =(

  • ah dude i hate the A's, it is pretty easy though , it just looks hard

  • What size mouth peice do you have? I use a 5C and it makes my life a lot easier.

  • A bach 3C is a better built mouth piece than a 5C. I assume your talking about A Bach 5C?

  • I was just talking about 5C mouth peice in general, And yes a 3C is better, but i believe it would be too hard to go from a 7C to a 3C,

  • I used to play the cornet and going from a 3c to a 7c back to a 3c wasn't all that hard.

  • It isnt, I switched from a 7 to a 3 and it was jesus.

  • Hi Alex,

I am an aspiring trumpet player, learning to play, check out the schilke brand of mouthpieces they have worked quite well for me I had a 7c and 3c and a yamaha, but when I got the schilke it was like magic more control more depth more expression!

If you like go to the Schilke website. It will tell what size mouth piece that fits you.

All Trumpet Player Keep On Playin,

    dolphinman 8

  • im never gonna tell u

  • This is First Yeah For districs (junior east) I think i play it pretty good My Teacher is the best trumpeter like ever and he says its OK which is really good for me i think its pretty tough though

  • yeah...i had a teacher...his name is Mr. Savage

but then my parents were like "it costs too much money" (typical asian response)...

so i ended up teaching the song to myself...i can actually play it well now...i just need to work on hitting the high A's each time..

  • Wow My parents are Asian and they like only spend money on stuff with learning involved (like math!?!)

  • Damn. That's all I have to say. Damn. That was freakin incredible. I'm decent for my age, but I can only dream of being have as great a player.

  • Ha, "have" as great a player. Not sure I made a mistake like that. I meant the say half as great a player.

  • were also playing this in band but this sounds much better than us but sadly i didnt get to play in this song cause im a drummer

  • My band is playing this. Its pretty fun ;]

  • It is tough i got it for districts this year

    JUst keep going for it

  • same...it is really tough

i hope i get in though (junior districts)

i've been practicing everyday and i still have to memorize the chromatic scale

  • yeah low f# 2 high a is tough

  • yeah...have you done it (junior districts) before?

do you no how hard it is to get in?

  • this person knows what he's doing. I'm trying to play this for a solo and it's hard. I hope I can play as half as good as he play's it

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA "this person" lmao

  • ok i played this in 6th grade and played it pretty good too.

    But this is amazing

but he kind of rushed the 16th rises in the operening of the second line

    Nearly perfect

  • its because he puts his own flare on it

  • Bravo! I love this melody & Wynton Marsalis' rendition.

  • I played this once.... I'm so happy there is no recording of it...... I was SO hung over, and my thongue felt like Sahara.....

  • Part of that is probably due to the very poor quality of this recording on youtube.

  • I'm not gonna listen to you until you put up a video of you playing it better.

  • Listen to Wynton play the Tomasi or Hummel concertos, both posted by the same user that posted this. He sounds amazing on those, despite the quality of the recording on youtube.

  • can u play better?

  • Whats all this "You could not play better" crap. If someone says a Hollywood movie is bad, they have the right to say even though you cannot expect them to produce a Hollywood movie.

  • its not that its that he said that thousands can do better which is why they are asking this

  • Wynton played this perfectly. You are absolutly horrible and judging music. Do not post comments when you dont know what your talking about...................

  • Absolutely the best - this is really SWEET!

  • The best! I listened to many renditions. There simply is no comparison.

  • Wonderful just full of emotion

  • i expect nothing less thn perfection from this guy.......and somehow i get it every time.

  • what cd is this on??
