I JUST saw a video on YouTube saying this very plane crashed in June 2011! It didn't specify what caused the accident, but there was fire and smoke shortly after take-off, and she crashed in a corn field in Illinois 5mi from the airfield.
All 7 aboard escaped, but the "Liberty Belle" herself was a total loss.
So sad to hear that. This would have been an awesome experience!
@EVAUnit4A A small onboard fire prompted an emergancy landing in a field. No one was hurt but the fire department couldn't reach the plane due to the field being too soft. They say thy have another B-17 undergoing restoration.
These ol' war machines deserve all the respect and attention they can get these days. There is a definite grace and solidity to them even decades later. (This, of course, also applies to the men who flew them.)
Simply outstanding video!!! It's crash landing and demise today is such a tragedy. I know the people that restored and operated her must be sick beyond words. Thank you for sharing this awesome video, this is one of the best I've seen of a B-17.
@Ashitaka1110 are you kidding me? the sound is awesome, better than Mozart. its a musical symphony of radial engine power. LOVE THAT SOUND, and nothing will EVER replace it
i did it myself, you have to pay for it. its $430 for 1/2 hour. one of the best 1/2 hours of my life!!! it doesnt bother me that it costs that much becuase its a very expensive aircraft to operate. its also a donation that helps keep this wonderful aircraft alive and well. its money well spent
I saw a B-17 once driving to work. They buzzed us real low as we were coming up on an entrance ramp to the highway near an airport. I saw them in the rear view and gave them a thumbs up out the window and they flashed the wing lights at me. ( landing lights maybe?). The sight/sounds of that B-17 going maybe 300 feet over me are something I will never forget.
this plane beats the expendables plane any day

What a shame about the loss of this rare piece of history. All my hopes of you guys tasking a run over my mother inlaws house is now for naught.

is there a air-conditioner in the aircraft?
Thebadass58 4 months ago
@Thebadass58 no air conditioner. you can open a window however. above 10,000 feet the crew would wear oxygen masks.
surfsupusa 4 months ago
@Thebadass58 Is not required cause on high altitudes air is so cold. Also heating is avaible but cabin is not pressurized, this is not B29 :)

why they turn the propeller?
nokia26300 1 year ago
@nokia26300 The propellers are turned to 'stir' the oil in the engines. The oil settles.
