@Nitrousx because most americans are stupid to think miatas are girly cars and not worth putting on tv. NA miata is a well designed or i'd say over engineered sport car. i own both NA miata and AW11 mr2. I enjoy them both immensely.
KaDuWin, you are truly speaking of something you know nothing about.
The NA has a 50/50 weight ratio, and plenty of power for it's 2,100/2,222 pounds of weight to keep up with forced induction SW's and AW's.
If your were to boost either of the engines in the NA it would be ridiculous to even call it a race.
The 1.6L and 1.8L in the NA are iron block engines and were originally designed for forced induction as they were in the Mazda 323GTX which was a purpose built rally car.
Well done! I tend to think those miatas were modified pretty well to stay with an MR2 SW chassis. I have a 5SFE myself with bilstein suspension and dunlop start spec tires and miatas are complete stupid jokes in the corners and dusting them on the straights is just as big of a joke. Fun cars? yes, quick in their own way? yes, but would a miata speed take an MR2 Turbo? No chance. New regular Miatas can't even catch my 5SFE.
The main reason why the MX5s/Miatas dominated was because they were using Toyo R888 tires, and the MR2s used a inferior Falken tire that wasnt really suited to racing in my opinion.
Yes tires definitely make the car. I didn't think about that. Thanks for the info. I recently upgraded my tires to Dunlop Direzza star specs ( which I was told is one of the stickiest street legal tires dunlop makes) on my MR2 and between the Pirelli PZeros Assimetricos and the Yokohoma ES100 which I had before the Dunlop are hands down are serious improvement. Thanks again for the info. Rock on!
um, watch out for the oil burn on your 5SFE later on buddy.. 5S head is popular with valve seal leaks all the time, and the sludge build up caused by it. i'm a toyota freak and i adopted a miata in my toyota family. dont get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of 3SGTE, but MR2Ts dont belong to shit talker like you.
AW11's came out N/A and with a supercharged 1.6L. The SW20's came out with an N/A 2.0L and a turbocharged version. Common engines are 4aGE, 4aGZE, 3SGE, 3SGTE and the 5SFE. Then you get the V6 swaps into them to make some neat power.
I'm hoping to become a the proud owner of a 1MZFE transplant myself soon. Oh how I long for the crazy torque and the growling exhaust note of a V6 in my MR2.
@trd88noz They do indeed come with a 2.2L and 2.0L NA. 5SFE is the 2.2L block that was put in the SW20 in overseas markets ie; US,UK I believe. The jap/australian specs at least came with the 2L 3SGE AND the 2L 3SGTE. Quite a number of people have gone and sourced a 2.2L 5SFE block and rebuilt it instead of stroking a 3SGTE to the same spec.
@ithertzz If i race a S-family enine, i wouldnt prefer with 5S block to the 3S-G the reason why 3S mostly use G head is because it's 3S block is for performance, so its different than 5S. 5S is more for economy. 3S block is way stronger than 5S. thats why factory toyota made 3SGTE rather than 5SGTE..
@trd88noz i know this is a year old, but the 5s block is very strong, stronger than the 3s block. most people that have high hp MR2s do in fact make a "5sgte" by using a 5s block with a 3sgte head.. this is becoming more and more popular. one drawback is that the 5s block doesnt have oil squirters. so if you are talking road racing yea a 3sge>5sge
SW20s do use the 3sge, most go for the rev3 and up, but if sumone uses a rev 1 or 2 they are allowed to make there cars slightly lighter to compensate for the lack of power. AW11s use the 4age as standard, no forced induction allowed.
this is awesome, why dont they make shows like this in the u.s. and put them on television?

SW MR2s come with NA 2.2L, and Turbo 2.0L.
not "2.0L NA and turbo version".

@evanmelin i guess thats why the 5S gets sludge all the time.. not enough oil circulations i guess..

sw20's should use a 3sge. which generation 3sge, i don't know. about the aw11's, not sure.
