  • love at 8:47 the butter is magically gone from her dress lol

  • yaaaaay! this movie doesnt confuse Dutch with German! :D

  • oh my lord, imagine how painful childbirth would have been back then...

  • @TheEmmaloves well, childbirth still is painfull, only now women have the choice of pain relief.....Some women want it and some do not.

  • I always make sure I have an empty stomach before I watch this part. the meats scene always makes me gag

  • @celestialangel61 I know what you mean!

  • that woman is freaky

  • 01:10 That old lady scared me!! ;)

  • WHERE IS THE BUCKET SCENE ? :(

  • Why can't they hire Dutch actors for the minor roles and train the stars up to speak with a Dutch accent rather than the Euro-Brit one. A posh-English-speaking Griet just destroys the historical atmosphere for me.

  • @MaximisedInsight I thoroughly agree with you.

  • plump bobbies! lmfao!

  • The man refers to breasts as "bubbies", and I think of The Real Housewives of NJ. Geez.

  • When does Frans come in?

  • @brooklea98 Frans or Agnes weren't in the movie, apparently.

  • @brooklea98 I think...never. Only in the novel.

  • cillian is so charming i don't even care what's his job in this movie...

  • I hope she marries the butcher *.* the young one of course ;)

  • Every one and Everything in the movie looks like it is out of painting! WOAH

  • isn't anna popplewell in this?

  • @narnia20ify yes

  • why does she always look down when ever someone is talking to her?

  • @SierraLD At that time in History,as in others, there was "class" status.A maid or servant looked down,or bowed to show that they were subservient to their masters.

  • Wow, there is a lot of food in this movie...

  • Colin firth is so sexy! mmm!

  • @chippyrox I've been a vegetarian for my whole life (18 years). I am not skinny. I am not chubby. I am healthy. I have never tried to force anyone to become a vegetarian. I know why they eat meat. I'm not an idiot. I have been barraded since I was a kid, though, why I DON'T eat meat. I've had to defend myself for my whole life. Not all vegetarians are like your friends, appearantly.

P.S. murder and animal slaughter are two very different things. I don't think people should be okay with either.

  • @chippyrox ....you know, millions of years ago, we were harbivores..but (thanks to evolution, God, mother nature, ..whatever)..we now eat meat..

..it's about moderation..but i agree, they do look deathly ill sometimes, espeacially the vegens

  • @linket88 We were NOT just herbivors, read some books,we ate what we could get, meat ,fish,fruit,vegetables,anything.Carnivors.

  • that part was just disgusting!

  • doesn't she just look more ..... angry than the girl on the painting?

  • There is no known self portrait of Vermeer, but to see what he MAY have looked like, Google image his painting, "The Procuress". It was an artistic convention when this was painted for artists to paint themselves into paintings and have themselves looking out at the viewer. The prostitute in the painting looks at her coins, her customer beside her looks at her, and the smiling man on the left - looks right at you. Very likely Vermeer!

  • oo the boy is the creepy guy who plays in red eye.

  • she has a cute smile aw. and pigs are adorable. i plan to have one when i'm older. i'm naming it peanut.

  • blessed people. so unsanitary. no gloves or nothing.

  • @musiqtube1 No gloves or "anything" ? Lots did not bath daily,or weekly, depended on where you lived, and if you were a slob or not.

  • Does she ever talk?

  • >the PIGS head i feel so sorry for them> idk why humans dont eat humans < since they can eat all the animals they could < they just fukin craven, who eats MEAT

  • @TheGazagirl16 Are you volunteering?

  • >the PIGS head i feel so sorry for them> idk why humans dont eat humans < since they can eat all the animals they could < they just fukin craven, who eats MEAT

  • I didn't expect peiter the son to be so ugly. the way he was described in the book i sorta imagined the guy who played prince charming on shrek lol. and i didn't expect the master to be average looking either he was described differently in the book. Also when i read the book i always thought tanneke was an indian or african slave because her name. but oh well i still think the book is better then the move but its like that for every book turned movie i guess.

  • Hmm, look at the way Maria Thins smiles around 6:24....now,I've read the book ,and I don't remember inferring this but... I think she might have sent Griet to van Rhyven's house on purpose, so that he could see her, and want a painting of her, so she they could gain more money.

  • that guys a pimp, hes tryin to get some young pussy

  • I think I'm going to become a vegetarian...

  • Is that a kitten sitting on a napkin at 9:06? They just let the pets and game run amok!

  • I sometimes have difficulty understanding Tanneke's accent. What does she say after "watch out for young mistress, she hates money troubles"?

  • @scorpietta

"She'll turn spiteful at this, you mark my words."

  • @86443 Thank you.

  • So I gather that the "patron" considered them to be "common folk"?

  • "My God she was happy."

    .

    .

    .

And by God, he was creepy.

  • What people were doing at 03:09?

  • @Claudia92GreenDay I am no historian, but I assume eviction with goods taken to be sold at auction.

  • ewww, so many dead animals

  • wut part is Frans in i loved the movie and the book------one of the best books i've ever read

  • @fastblondie99 yeah i feel sad that its rather short ):

  • @guylianseashore yea i think they left out some of the best parts of the book out but it wasn't too bad for a book

  • Forget the clean aspect what about perverted old men going after you!? *shivers*

  • @LadyYuzuki it still goes on in some parts of the world. icky.

  • Scarlett Johansson is an incredible actress and also very beautiful!I also love her in the Other Boleyn Girl which I have I've got to hurry up and get this one!

  • pieter was supposed to have hair like an angel, all golden and wavy :( ugh and i imagined johannes to be totally different. prettier and all.

  • Oh how she rubs butter or lard on the chicken holding them to her breasts and dirtying her dress. Yucks, they are so dirty back then.

  • what that woman was doing to that chicken looks odd. I don't think i could live in those day they had like major hygine problem.

  • Regardless of whether or not he looks like the character described in the novel, and whether or not he's too beautiful to be chopping slabs of bloody meat....Cillian Murphy is one fine specimen.

  • @Ash1706 Amen to that.

  • @Ash1706 he makes me proud to be Irish :D

  • @Ash1706 Right? He is just too pretty!

  • Moments befor reading the blogs, and watching them fix the food it jus came across my mind,"do they wash their hands?"

  • @thebloga20 I don't think so. I was surprised to see her put a chunk of soap in the boiling water she was washing the sheets in (part 1).I didn't think they even had soap back then,or if they did it was only used by the very rich/ royalty.

  • that meat guy is nice looking!

  • @SuaveSweetie Yeah,isn't he,Tragically handsome.

  • @thebloga20 mmhmm!

  • @SuaveSweetie But of course - he's cillian ♥

  • CILLIAN MURPHY!!!!!!! = HOT!!!!

  • no wonder they all died from the plague back in the day jeez lol look how they cleaned their silverwear

  • Comment removed

  • @ForRussiaWithLove im not making fun, I'm actually very serious about my comment. If they were rich I doubt those were in storage....

  • Comment removed

  • @ForRussiaWithLove they didnt know germs existed back then

  • @Endrawnia

I now they did not know about germs, Its just that they were not a very rich family so only on special occasions would they use their best things, like that silver ware, and would just wipe them down from being in storage....

that is just what I gather from the book and movie...

I am not trying to be annoying about this...

  • @ForRussiaWithLove not annoying in the slightest my dear :D

  • @Endrawnia

  • i love this movie but cillian murphy is miscast - pieter in the book was supposed to be earthy, large in stature etc. cillian murphy's one of those skinny dreamy poetic types, looks completely wrong for the part

  • @lysjanvier just what i thought. he's so pale, he should have a more bronze skin, he's working allday outside and i don't think the sun didn't shine back those days in the netherlands ;)

  • the butchers had a cockney accent ...in holland lol

  • I have a question: in the book Maria Thins is always referred to as Maria Thins, always Maria Thins, never just Maria, is that meant to be like the equivalent of Mary Helen or something?

  • @pemchem It's always Maria Thins. Don't know why, because Thins was her last name.

  • Pieter is supposed to have curly blond hair and taller than his father. :-/

Cillian Murphy is still hot though.

  • Hell yeah he is. I love his look in this movie!

  • i thought pieter looked wrong.....

  • "Satin tight on her plump little bubbies." LMAO

  • Thank you so much for sharing this great movie.

  • I hate how she hasn't even seen vermeer at this point, they should have put him in the opening scene like the book, all that tension is gone! grr

  • There's a deleted scene where they show the Vermeer's visiting Griet's house at the beginning. I don't think they're on Youtube though.

  • the books is always better than the movies... but this is pretty good :) this is really good!

  • @pinkfedora91 I know right its not as good as the book!!

  • wow they changed all the detialss

  • I love this movie. my favourite.

  • The book is much more detailed but I love the film. to but the book makes pieter sound like a pedo

  • I loved the book!

  • Eww, peters father is gross

  • They made Peiter look ugly in the movie.

  • What is this, Delft wasn't like Venice, with the canals and the boats.......

  • Yeah it was....

  • our school too i hate it

  • Eh, Tanneke's just doing the best she can, like the rest of us

  • tanneke is a nasty filthy wench. and, according the the book, got a nasty, filthy attitude too.

  • ok so 1:07 is where she looks like a cute little piglet

  • jajajajajajajajajaja

  • wow she really doesn't say much in this movie

  • You can already tell the old guy is a sleaze bag. "You can practically stroke the satin." Meh, not pleasent.

  • @MyLifeIsDancing93 he is very creepy.

  • @MyLifeIsDancing93 my mistake, i was trying to click on something else not thumbs down, am just streaming this movie, i never seen it before.....

  • so beautiful autom sense to it

  • Vermeer's wife that Griet (Scarlett) goes to work for and the mother-in-law are absolutely wretched women. What a beautiful film though!

  • thank you so much for posting this!!

  • van Rujiven's so creepy when he starts talking about the dress. xD I started laughing.

  • this is absolutely nothing like the book they cut out some important stuff already,

  • This movie is just absolutely beautiful. 'Nuff said.

  • I know. It's like a Vermeer painting all by itself.

  • the only time i saw him was when they were sitting in church they scan over him the rest of his scenes are in the deleted scenes

  • My computer wont let me watch the last twenty seconds. What did i miss?

  • the way they filmed this is very well done, I'm very impressed

  • why do they have to treat the food like that ??

people then didnt treat food carelessly...

especially when on a tight budget^^

  • Wow, cleaning must of been terrible back then, no windex, orange glow (pledge as well), no bleach! What would an OCD person like me do??!!

  • I think they used lye, vinegar, etc. Vinegar works well. Maybe they had the 17th century form of windex, LOL. ^^

  • @Clempath I know, right, you couldn't even vacuum the rugs, you had to brush them by hand - so filthy and time consuming I't must've been a form of hell to be a maid then.

  • @spinspinnsugar Ok, totally forgot about no vaccums!!! I would simply die! LOL

  • @Clempath lol! totally agree, however i wonder if ocd existed at that time? maybe it would have been easier...

  • @Clempath lol..all i was thinking about the entire movie was...germs !!!

  • @jasminehks All you could think about was 'germs'?Well thanks to them and those 'germs',people got sick and died, the living built up antibodies,to repel them in the future. All the plagues, helped the living to repel germs that would have killed them ten years prior. When the Europeans came to America, the germs they carried killed 76% of the natives.Same thing happened in Hawaii.

  • @billy1212ist oh wow...chill !!!! you would too if u had even mild OCD...and thank you i think i already knew everything u said

  • @billy1212ist

dude chill. I mean think about it, diseases back then when described sound REALLY similar to sicknesses we still have now-a-days. We can just handle them a bit better. Besides, there's NEW sicknesses developing all the time. It's the easiest thing in the world to not spread crap when you look into it. But alas, that's not the case. You're giving off the impression that just because you're mr. indestructible anti-bodies doesn't mean everyone else is. It's very selfish thinking.

  • wow gave birth already, that was kinda fast! i thought that would happen later and the master and griet havnt even talked as much

  • ugh that jiggling pie thingy and the smearing the chickens just turned my stomach...

  • i could so have done without the meat scenes...

  • i thought rollo weeks was in it

  • Dude, like i heard Rollo Weeks was in this movie. but i havent seen him. can anyone tell me who he is?

  • Well, firefly215, answering your question about a pig's head)...

When my father was in the army he saw a man in the train who took a pig's head from his bag (it was boiled in a solted water with spices, you know, something like Ukranian "salo). And he cut small pieces from it and ate. He was from Kazakstan as far as I remember.

  • Comment removed

  • Was his name Borat?

  • This is TRIVIAL but can anyone tell me...what can u make w/ pig heads? What dish? What kind of meal would it be to use pig heads?

My closest interpretation of the pigs head are fish heads where @ home, my mom will clean the scales off & use the fish head for soup ( with the fish head boiling in the soup) since the head is one of the few parts of the fish we dont eat..but even that soup is not made daily.

So again, anyone have an idea realistically of what dishes the pig heads are used for?

  • maybe for meat (pork) stock which could then be added to soups and sauces. But then again people eat pig's feet and cow's tongue, so maybe the head was used for multiple purposes.

  • Wow, the soundtrack is so utterly unfitting to the movie... and yet apparently amazing! *____*

  • ....Pieter's son Pieter is not as handsome as I imagined he would be... :/ kinda hoping he's not her main love interest in the movie. Forgive me, I've yet to finish the book! XD

  • Pieter is much worse than I expected, he's not handsome at all! :)

  • the pigs heads really put me off watching it after a bit xs

  • Don't speak until you're spoken to..... my goodness we've come along way.

  • Cillian Murphy!!! <33 love this man!

  • ME TOO! I looooooove that man! ACK! BE STILL MY HEART! lol

  • whats the jelly lokin stuff tannikah takes out of the mold?

  • what is she doing at :27? i don't get it.

  • She is cleaning without moving anything.

That's what she was hired to do.

Clean his studio without disturbing anything.

  • no i mean what exactly is she cleaning? paper?

  • She is cleaning a letter.

  • 00:00-00:41 is my favorite part because i like watching people clean. lol

  • I really like this movie. It is like my favorite romantic one, besides, I love Johannes Vermer attitude.
