i have a quick question about the people of this county who come to England, why are so many of them so reulctant to say this is where there from? I have a friend from there and he always says hes from portugal. He told the whole school he is portugese 4 sum reason :S are the people of this country ashamed of thier nationality or what? please help someone!
East Timor was under Portuguese occupation for almost 500 years. their language was portuguese and still uses many Portuguese words. Only 35 years ago they were brutally occupied by Indonesia and the whole country is scarred by destruction, violence and genocide. Many people still have no homes. He may feel Portugal is easier for people to relate to as most people have never heard of Timor. He may have terrible memories of his homeland and wants to forget for a while.
i dont think so he only lived there in the 90s till early 2000 which i think was when the indonesians stopped the destruction.what else confuses me is that he is related to an indonesian family!
Quite funny actually, at school he told the teachers he was Portugese and they actually brought a lady in for Brazil to be his translator when he can only speak about 10 words of portugese.was tragic! :D
actually in 1999 200,000 people fled east Timor to the west because Indonesia was terrorizing the country who had just voted for their independence. That was the worst time for that generation.
@ Billysharp. Prior to 2002 people from East Timor were mainly classified as either Portuguese or Indoneseian. A lot of Timorese were proud to call themselves Portuguese as it was a way of showing their rejection of Indonesia. I don't know if that was the case with your friend though, he could just be a dick head, even the Timorese have those I'm afraid :(
