@Tananjoh That was definitely the major problem, but the same is true for modern revolvers. There is a space where the cylinder meets the barrel and thus there is gas escaping. So I don't see a Hall or Furguson rifle being any worse in that respect, in fact I'm confident in saying there would have been less gas escaping in these designs.
I heard during Civil War soldiers would load their muzzle-loaders improperly in the heat of battle, eg double loading, etc. A breach-loader is not only simpler, but it's impossible to do things like double loading.
The Hall action could also double as a pistol
