Several years ago when I first heard this song on a Chieftains album, I was searching my mind for where I heard this before...having not previously heard a recording. I finally deferred to my Mother and asked if Daddy had ever sung "Raglan Road." At 80+ years old, my Mother replied "your Father stood in the kitchen doorway and sang this after your sister's wedding (1971). Each time I listen to this song, it gives me chills, smiles and fond memories of my Dad even to this day.
Great job - appreciate your verifying the lyric (love Van & The Chieftans' version but always wondered whether Van was doing his own thing now and again). Great job! Also thanks for the link to the Kavanagh (as hipster) painting.
Thanks - yes I was interested in getting the original version of the poem as written - Van has a poetic licence of course but I wanted Kavanagh's own words. I phoned the library for them.
I sent Oliver a link to your comment. He has a limited edition of the painting if you want a copy. He was going to send me one recently but I'm on the road so I asked him to hold it for now. You can find him on line. Thanks again. Best wishes for the New Year.
@cuchaia I have wooed, not as I should, a creature made of clay. When the angel woos the clay he'll lose, his wings at the dawn of day.' & ' let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.' Fantastic words. Never quite understand the clay. Spose means loved a flesh & blood person, not an idol. Ther're a few things I feel unsure about, masonic refs & slight patronising attitude to women, as in 'I gave her gifts of the mind'. A wonderful song, & you can tell it's based on genuine love.
Almost anything with the Mandolin sounds better than the origional. Won't go that far here, but it stands up...
My father was a barman in Dublin in the late 1950's, to early 1960's. He used to serve drink to Paddy Kavanagh & Brendan Behan from time-to-time, depending on where & how they were barred from various other establishments...This song always reminds me of my Da. He passed away a few years ago, but his stories live on! Heartfelt music is the only kind that matters.
I just got back from driving school-bus ( here in Vancouver ) ...it's great to hear from you ...thanks for the story about your Da and the 'others'...I've been threatening to get back to makin' more vids...I'm gettin' close ... I'll see about doing one for you ... best, sé btw... I put up a little pastel vid this aft' :)
What an amazing cover. Really beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

thanks for the compliment ... glad you enjoyed it... I learned to appreciate the song from listening to Van Morrison.
It's a great song... and I always try to remember the last lines whenever I'm in that situation.
