AM TRYING TROUGHT ALMOST 20 YEARS TO FOUND THIS MOVIE "ITS IMPOSSIBLE" AND DOWNLOADING THERE IS NOT SITES WITH SPANISH INTRUCTIONS I HOPE TO SEE IT BEFORE TO DIE
I was lucky enough to find out a VHS copy of the movie in French for 2$ here is Quebec. It's worth far more than the two bucks I paid for it!
Did you notice that the Germans never shoot with MP40 in the movie? When they use machine guns, it's always what looks like MP28 (but it could be some British Manchesters used as if they were German since the Brits heavily copied it!)
Anyone know who now owns the video property rights to this film? Paramount was distrib., Mann was Director, but who has the property now? I would appreciate any leads. Thanks, KSR
I've always loved Michael Mann's films. This was a brilliant film. Maybe made even better because of the use of Tangerine Dream for the sountrack. Listen to Logos - Live At The Dominion.
i would love to find any copy of this, vhs or dvd dosent matter. i remember seeing this movie when i was around 10 and being utterly mesmerized. As i've grown older i've found that most of michael mann's films have that effect. I still find it entrancing to this day.
I've been told by various people that there is no DVD version. Bloody shame, you're lucky if you have a video, I don't even have that. I'd give my right nut to have the DVD. I have one version of the soundtrack but it has other things that are definitely NOT from the movie. Wish TD would get around to releasing a legit version.
And I've been looking for it. Yes, I file share. But I'd be happy to buy the music if I knew what I was getting and that included the track featured in this awesome video clip./ Incidentally, There are indeed some historical inaccuracies in the uniform department here. That's discussed on a website devoted to all things Keep. I haven't been there in ages, so I don't know whether it's still there. But there you go.
I remember wanting this soundtrack and requesting it before it was released. The buggers didn't call me and somehow it came and went in a flash. To add insult to injury, There wasn't any proper organization and presentation of the music. And so you had all these bootlegs flying around, put out by people who didn't necessarily get it right. Is this track named The Deadly Silver Crosses? I have a track with that name and it doesn't sound like this at all! I don't have this though. >
The best Tangerine music ever, in my opinion. Maybe Wilson's story inspired them. Maybe that's what they need to focus. They make cool sounds, but I've never found TD to be especially talented./ I don't know why the author would label this a dream sequence. It isn't. Yes, The soldiers' minds are influenced by Rasalom/ Molasar (flip the name around), but that's not the same as dreaming. I've watched this movie many dozens of times and seen it when it first showed in the theater. The music? >
@Aaarby Why is this great film not on DVD yet? What does Paramount need to have done in order for them to release it? Do they still own the rights? If not them them then who? I hope it never gets remade either. This is one of my all-time favorite movies.
@Aaarby "I've never found TD to be especially talented"? LOL... TD has been active since 1967 and they have influenced looots of bands and music genres. That alone proves you wrong...
Look at Tangerine Dream album Logos Live at the Dominion. Listen the last five and half minutes of Part I. That version is slightly different than in the movie but it is good.
I'd like to have that movie version plain without the movie sounds and speech. I don't know how or where I could get it. Can anyone help?
Those troops werent SS they were Gerbigjager, aka Mountain troops..why they werent in Russia is beyond me. As for the SS, if they were Einsatzgruppen they would have worn Field gray..not black uniforms..Gabriel Byrne was a SD officer, and you bet your ass he wouldn't shoot Romanians just like that..
Whats the song called at the very start of the film where all of the jeeps tanks etc are driving towards the villages, and the man lights up a cigerrete then falls asleep?
I saw the movie when it first came out. I was in Vancouver. I liked it but thought that it lacked dialog. That was my initial reaction. I have only come to appreciate it more over the years, although there are some weak moments in the acting department./ Yes I read the book, but only after seeing the movie about a dozen times, lol! And it was all good. A remake of this would likely fail. Mann's movie would be hard to top. A sequel, though, would interest me. Place it in our time...
This song is also on the Tangerine dream concert album LOGOS Live at the Dominon. Its part of the first set on the disc. Too bad most of the music on the official soundtrack was never used in the movie.
Actually, my dad hates 80s movies, but this remains his favorite movie of all times. He simply loves the music and the story. He loves this movie so much. This is the only 80s movie my dad could tolerate. How weird is that?
Why this film did not get the acclaim it should have, I don't know. It is truly the most mystical classics I have ever seen and enjoy it to his day. This is one of Mann's best films and a true masterpiece. Hercules TAK
Only Tangerine Dreams can make trance music in the 80s so cool. Truly the godfathers of trance music. Ahead of their times. They are so not given the credit they deserve. Most of Tangerine Dreams music is just pure sex and trance. Just wonderful score all around for the keep. Their music always makes me want to make love to a beautiful woman. Tangerine Dreams: Sensual, mystical, romantic, hypnotic, spellbinding, and just all around great.
I always thought that their soundtracks for the films "Legend" & "Miracle Mile" were pretty classic and worthy of reverence as well. Anyhow, I have a soundtrack re-mastered for this movie and I await the release of this on DVD when ever that might be. If only they would have had at least one Tiger Tank in that small platoon it would have even made more entertaining. But oh well. I like the film and the music.
and who knows, if people keep posting positive comments on it, and keep putting scenes from the movie on youtube, maby this will wake up Paramount to release it on DVD, but thanks again Nikmagg!!!!
Awesome movie!!!!!! Awesome Music!!! combined they are mind-blowing!!!!
A big thank you to Nikmagg and all the other users who are putting this movie so we can all watch parts of it. Obviously this movie is very rare and hard to come by, so watching this helps, it got me back into the movie all over again
Man, I remember watching bits and pieces of this movie over the years, but I was only six when this came out, now I am 31 and I getting into this movie all over again. I tried to research it on the internet, but there isn't too much on it.
But I absolutely love this movie and the music, and I would kill for the movie on DVD or just to find out any info on like the making of the movie or behind the scenes stuff.
Salute the 2nd SS Das Reich - I'll choke on Panzer Fumes anyday. I cannot believe Michael Mann disowned this film??? I loved it myself. 1983 this film came out - I was 5. Though I saw it for the first time in '93. It's totally 80's all the way.
I had the privilege of being taken to see the private viewing of this movie before it was released (on video only unfortunately) down Curzon Street accompanied by Chris Franke. Its far superior to some rubbish that made it to the big screen - although the soundtrack was really badly mixed in the intial release. Aahh happy days!
According to IMDB a movie called "The Keep" is coming out in 2009. I don't know if it's a remake but that would be interesting. But this is a little off subject but the another book by Paul Wilson (same person who wrote the keep) is in the works.

"The Keep" (1983). Tangerine Dream's music is pure brilliance. Their film soundtracks are amazing: Thief, The Keep, Risky Business, Legend. 4 great films from the 80's with great TD scores
A movie widely underscored - I have the remastered sound track and Gloria's Theme Track # 1 blows my mind away!! The track you hear now is totally totally awesome on my sound track too!! DVD must!! TD's music carries you into another world most notably in and of this soundtrack remastered!! GREAT MOVIE!! A 10+!! I have two soundtracks for this whereas the other is a copy of the Bootleg version although there is another version I don't have!

Interesting that most of the music in the movie wasn't even specifially made for the movie but yet it works quite well.

@ProfPA
According to IMFDB it is indeed a MP28. It struck me as odd that the only pistol was a PPK. In the novel, Woermann clearly carried a Luger.
