From what I can see in this video it doesn't look like the guy is hitting the horse at all. Just waving his hands in front of the horse's face. Considering that this horse is sensitive it would make sense that he would react this way with just hand waving. It would be better if we knew what the guy was actually saying.
@n1honeybee He is honestly hitting the horse in the face repeatedly. To hear him hitting the horse and what the guy is saying click the link for the video with audio which is given just shortly after the video begins.
@pannierama Just lots of love, trust, and bonding work. Don't force him into anything he's uncomfortable with. Use lots of patience and go at his speed. Gently and slowly take things a tad further each time you feel like he's ready to progress. Gentle talking and coaxing help a lot too.
In what way was this guy "beating" your horse? I completely agree that yes he did touch him in a inappropriate way - but he was in no way "beating" your horse. I think you need to look up the term "beating" dictionary.
@Heatherhickman1986lo Google beating definition. This is what I find right off the bat, "A punishment or assault in which the victim is hit repeatedly." Does that not describe the video? Yes, yes it does. Chase is the victim and he is being hit repeatedly in the form of punishment.
"Cowboy methods" the fastest way to get a 1,000+ animal to not trust you or anyone else. That makes for a fun ride! I'm glad your horse is doing fine now. This is crazy. You said in the description he hit Chase because "he was invading his space". All I can think was: what the hell? The first time he hit him all Chase was doing was standing there, and then the next few times he was shying away a bit because the guy had already hit him, and he was scared of the guy getting near his face! This guy may be a trainer, but anyone with a skilled eye would know that your horse was going nothing wrong. By the way, Chase is gorgeous!
although i wouldnt consider this abuse, i am just trying to figure out where exactly this trainer learned this. I looked and looked through out the entire video and he kept PUTTING HIMSELF in your horses space. If that is the behavior he was trying to show people he shouldve found a horse that actually had respect issues. Then, his method wouldnt be creating a negative reaction in the horse, and the people watching, Good luck with ur guy he sure is cute!

Pretty hard to watch this, the guy is pretty tough on the horse, typical behavior of some of the old school guys, the horse looks calm and friendly enough, did not look pushy to me from what I saw in the video, it seems difficult for these people to change their ways, I don't quite understand why he was pulling and hitting on the horse, maybe he had to make it look like the horse was getting too close so he could use his 'special horse whisperer magic' happy for the horse that he has moved on.

@buttcoat There wasn't anything we could do. PD here didn't(and probably never will) even do anything about a couple starving their horses to death year after year.
Umm wow. I watched the video with audio. If I had been your horse I would have turned around and REALLY kicked him in the face. However your horse seems very sweet, and he is very beautiful. You had a right to pull him out of there as soon as you did. And when he pulled on the lead and Chase screamed...did he not take a hint right there and then that he's doing something WAY wrong?!
How in god's name is he up there explaining why tho is beneficial? Is he trying to train or create training problems? What an ass. I would have walked up, grabbed the lead rope and given him a good smack to the face
Well he deserved it i mean he was hitting the horse tugging at its ROPE headcollor and spooking it so its frisky. You don't do that to horses its cruel if anything.
I can't believe the guy was using the excuse, "He's in my space" when he was clearly walking into the horses space. And then pulling the horse closer. What an asshole. I kinda wanna hit him in the face now. -.-
The "trainer" yanks on the horse's face, then drives him away by making rythmic motion but being a horrible brute by hitting the horse. If he were a LOT gentler, a LOT nicer, and a LOT more expanative about what he was doing, and if he KNEW what he was doing, he'd be ok. But he's obviously confusing the poor horse by dragging him toward himself then forcing him away.
i hope that trainer goes to hell! whose right is it for a random stranger to train a horse without permission of the owner and still be too darn ignorant to know it was wrong and stop, you could get the police to become invloved and this could be your evidence. bastard ' trainer' man
@96drummer2 1.) Listen to the video with audio. That loud smack is quite a bit more than a tap. A tap would NOT make Chase react so fearfully. 2.) Chase is a gelding. The idiot repeatedly called him a her, as you can hear in the one with audio, even though he was well informed otherwise.
@alexisfowler93 You know, don't listen to anyone who are saying "oh it was just a tap." That obviously was NOT just a tap. You have every right to disagree with what someones doing to YOUR horse.
Aw he kind of looks headshy to me.. you never ever hit a horse in the face, the only time it would even be considered is if the horse tries to bite you then you give them a little smack on the nose to tell them its not okay.. (btw i know this is isnt you, just speaking in general:P)
Not a great trainer. He is confusing the horse by pulling him into his space then punishing him for doing as he is told. I'd be confused, too. I train and there are people that are not allowed to touch the horses that I train. The number just grew by one.
The methods this man are using make my stomach queasy. Yet, I know far too many people who train the same way. This is why, after 8 years of clicker training with dogs, I began to use it with a horse this past August. I am laughed and scoffed at by those friends, but I am so glad I chose this path. I am glad you got your horse out of that situation...I'm sorry you/he were put in it to begin with.
This so called trainer should have someone hit him in the cheek bone! He makes a comment that it makes the horse shy away from him...no duh! The idea of "pushing" the horse's shoulder by only having your hands close NOT on the horse is good, but to actually hit? He should not be allowed anywhere near a horse. This colt is beautiful and the only this this "trainer" did was make him head shy. I'm sorry for you and your horse
@hunnymonster86 It won't let me post a link here but if you go to all breed pedigree query and type in "Chasemea Slick Shadow" you can find his bloodlines.
Well actually, I didn't see him hit the horse a single time, how can you beat up a horse without actually hitting him????????? The horse already seems head shy.
@chance666ify Listen to the one with audio, you hear him actually hitting the horse if you for some odd reason can't see it. The horse wasn't head shy prior, he was used to people treating his face with respect not whopping a hand at it!
@alexisfowler93 Well you were there so you would know better than I. But from what I saw, it just looks like the guy is shoving his hand in the horses face. Hopefully this beautiful pony got heaps of reassuring pats and cuddles and didn't take any nasty habits from the event. I can't think of one reason why someone would do that but maybe he had a point.......I just don't get that point!
no i woulda gotten up as soon as he jerked my horses head like that. theres noooo way i would sit there and watch i would tell him to pack up and never come back. i dont care whoooo he is because it means nothing to me
that guys a jerk! i know a guy who is an evil little prick and hes allowed near horses! men and animals dont go together, men can be so cruel(women not so much) id be so angry at this jerk!
Did you have any problems catching your horse afterwards? This is sad and I cant stand seeing horses being beat. I love horses and all they are is curious seekers
that's not training a horse, that's being a complete dick! there are some fantastic horse trainers out there who want to do all they can to help with a certain problem, then there are people like him who teach nothing apart from to be very wary of men. A friend of mine had the same happen to her pony and he hates men now after being "trained" by some guy who thought hitting horses meant that they behave.
Good luck with your horse in the future, he really is beautiful :)
Guys..... I don't think he was hitting the horse. I think the horse is just headshy. If he had been hitting the horse the horse wouldn't of just stepped away, he would be backing up, ears pinned, head thrown up super super high to where the "trainer" couldn't reach it. I do agree though that this "trainer" doesn't know what he's doing. If he's trying to get the horse over being headshy, this is not the method to use. I think this guy just thinks he can train.....
@TheJadeamp242 "Listen to the one with audio, you hear him actually hitting the horse if you for some odd reason can't see it. The horse wasn't head shy prior, he was used to people treating his face with respect not whopping a hand at it!" The guy is claiming the horse is invading his space even though he is the one yanking Chase closer to him when Chase was minding the mans space. In return he gets hit in the face every time, just for following command.
I so happy Chase and you are doing great now. Its very sad what some people think is right way of doing things. They may be a animal but they are so smart, willing to learn and just love you no matter what.
sorry your horse had to be in this situation. i can tell without the audio that he is creating a "scenario" for the audience by jerking the horse's head in as if he was a horse that was "pushing" his way in. then he goes and "fixes" the problem (which is no way a correction. i've put ground manners on many horses from drafts to mini's and never once have i hit or threatened to hit a horse's head to move them away). so he screwed your horse both ways >:(
omg im sorry,i know how it feels. my Arabian was giving me problems one day when I was training her and my uncle came with a whip and hit her a couple times. I grabbed the whip n hit him with it and asked how it felt. She now hates whips and when I work her in the arena with a whip, she is still scared of them, yet if I put it on my shoulder facing the ground she runs to me.
What is this guy trying to teach? It looked to me like he was pulling the horses's head over sometimes and then smacking him for obeying. And then it looked like he was teaching people how to smack your horse in the face 'the proper way' or something. Wow.
Glad you moved your horse and he's doing better now :)
like thiiis if you agree hes making him stop by yanking on him so he can hit him in the face wat a jerk >:(to me he just looks like a gay cowboy wanna be in skinny jeans
like thiiis if you agree hes making him stop by yanking on him so he can hit him in the face wat a jerk >:(to me he just looks like a gay cowboy wanna be in skinny jeans
What is the matter with that guy. He pulls the horses head towards him then smacks him in the head for being to close. And he was, for no reason, yanking on his head. I think we need to put a rope around his head and to the same thing. Then we'll see how he likes it
wtf that guy is a dick head! see people like that makes the world a fucking retarted place. As if people would let him do that to there horses... >.< it doesnt take a genious to work out if you do that to a horse it will become head shy and dislike humans.... i just wanna know how long did it take you to get chase not head shy anymore?
i am sorry for what you and your hours went threw,we have seven horses and a donkey we love them all very much.i spent a lot of my life as a ranch hand in Utah and Nevada, been around horses all my life and in that time i learned one thing there is no more cruel worthless person as a horse trainer sixteen years in the saddlebred industry showed me they care only about getting your money,i saw way to many horse die because of these fools please don't trust them
Firstly, that horse is stunning, secondly..is that David Hasselhoff?? And thirdly, everyone knows the best way to get a horse over being headshy, is by smacking it over and over in the face.....atleast thats what David Hasselhoff said....
I am so sorry! I woulda screamed at the guy! I hope your horse is doing better :( I ever see this guy i will show him how to do a few things.. See if he likes to be smacked around for doin nothing!!
Shoot, if anybody did that to my horse, she'd bite him, then turn around and kick him. I would know - she's threatened to kick me when I slapped her neck for biting me.
That guy is an idiot, you should never hit a horse in the face. thats why they get scared, and start jerking. Thats one reason i never let anyone touch my horse. i would have said something to him, maybe even hit him in the face.
the horse will become head shy. that's alot of use when he can start getting broken!! i know a few people with horse's that are head shy, and this is how is occurred. a man throwing and waving his hand is its face. the horse thinks it punishment and thinks it doing something from.
I think it's very brave of you to allow us to watch this. Your horse is beautiful and I think you are 100% correct to be sharing this information. :-)
I wonder if you could take this video to the humane society or animal countrol and they could make an abuse case out of it and get him convicted. Maybe even have someone else go "undercover" as a client to get more evidence if they think this isn't enough proof.
Smacking a horse with your hand, whether on the shoulder, rear, or in the face, simply teaches a horse that your hand creates discomfort. Is that what we want? To train our horses to mistrust our hands? What is being done to horse today in the name of training was done to dogs 20 years ago. That "training" is now considered abusive, yet we continue to use physical discomfort and threat of harm to train horses.Horse people need to learn behavior modification using positive reinforcement. It works!
I had a kinda similar problem with my now 6 yr old mare except it happen multiple times from different people.
If you want here my story please message me I would also like to here stories like this as people think that it is just me over reacting and that people don't really mistreat horses

i think i know what he was TRYING to do....but he had no phases, there is suppose to be phase 1, phase 2, phase 3, and phase 4. (each getting progressively more demanding if the horse isn't listening)....but he was just starting at phase 4, there was no asking for something or wrong behaviour to begin with, and thats why the horse was confused.....and i agree for the most part you shouldn't hit a horse in the head like he is, should be the neck or shoulder for his situation
Yeah I would love nothing more than to give that trainer a few punches in the face, then pat him and say sorry then start again... See if it leaves he confused.
dude looks like a nob he isnt reading the horse he is looking at the audience the hose is patiently waiting for instruction and the instruction is ...."move your head im being a cock"..... not cool i feel for you!
He looks to be a coward and a bully, not a trainer. I cannot believe what some people think is acceptable to do with horses. Even scarier that many in the audience think this is ok. You are well rid of him.
at that point i would have forgot bout the rules and laws and done everything in my power to stop him, but im sorry . he is a disgrace to all trainers. beautiful horse by the way.
I'm still kind of new at learning about horses, but even I know this is wrong. He's sending the horse such mixed signals. He jerks the horse towards him, making the horse think he wants him closer, then raises his hand at him? What the fuck? Some "Trainer". I could train a horse better. -w-
@TheWillowsDad I honestly don't know how to contact him, nor his where abouts now days. His name is Roger Thomas and this was filmed in Ks if that helps at all.
Wow. What a grade-A d-bag. This a-hole seriously needs to be kicked in the chest and stomped on a few times, then put in jail. You never treat a horse or any animal like this.
This guy is an idiot. Well hopefully not a complete idiot, but in thees circumstances he is. This is how you make a horse head shy! I've ridden several horses that bite, but I don't smack their face! The only time I would ever hit a horse in the face is the horse doesn't listen to anything else and keeps trying to bite me. Even thenIi would do it on the nose and not very hard! How can people do this stuff?! (btw your horse is gorgeous!)
@chachee738 It was a demo clinic at my then-new barn. The lady bringing him needed a few horses volunteered for him to show off some stuff on. Little did I know THAT was what he intended on showing the audience.
Beautiful Horse. I had boarded my paint colt at a barn in NY... They beat him :( I could never prove it. So I moved him and my mare... The change in them too was amazing.
this is really mean, the poor horse! he/she is clearly terrified i dont actually really understand what this can teach to a horse apart from make him terrified and see that when you raise your hand to stroke or praise him he sees this as a threat and attack? i mean i dont have a clue about horse training but this seems wrong to the horse.

This guy seems like an asshole. It is completely unnecessary to hit a horse on the face, especially this horse who was doing nothing wrong. You can just tell the horse is not comfortable around this man at all.
okay so Where do you live so I can tell the man hes an idiot. You only move a horse out of your space if hes in your space and the horse wasn't. You don't walk into the horses space then move him in a rude way.

If a horse does something seriously naughty or dangerous I will give them a smack on the shouder or neck, but the face? I would only ever hit a horse on the face if they were lunging to bite me and i had to get their face away from me. but that would never happen because horses are gentle and would only be naughty if they weren't exercised daily or were being cramped in a stall. I dont think this guy meant to hurt him,he probably thought he was training him, but he obviously wasn't doing it wel.
there was this girl out at my barn and she was an adult too and i was out lounging my 9yr old QH that i had just gotten over beeing head shy up to the point to where i can touch his ears and hug has face and not have him try to bite me and this woman notices that im having issues and she walks over and grabs him from my mother and tries to work with him and when he wouldn't she starts to beat on him with a riding crop and just starts hitting the crap out of him ON HIS HEAD!!! made me mad as hell
He Should not be a horse trainer. I've worked with stubborn horses, and gentle horses, and he should learn the difference. He should also learn what "invading his space" is and teach it in a more appropriate manner. I've even trained horses after someone like this gets through with them, and after gentle handling and patience, they turn out to be some of the best horses I know.
if i was there i would be all chipmunk on that guy! i mean you don't just wack a horse for standing there listening to you! cmon "trainer" dude! i have a horse (she died not to long ago =*( and i never attacked her like that!!! i mean i would hit her for biting (not smacking to the death! just tap or something you know?)

Your horse should have totally kick the shit out of him till his guts came out of his arss! To me it looks like he was trying to cause a problem...like head shy(!) and then correct it to make him look good! I don't understand what your boy was doing wrong and your boy looks so well behaved especially for a 3 year old! Hes not going to understand him hitting him! Ahhh i hope hes alright now! He's a very lovely looking and well mannered boy from this! x

@buttcoat - DESCRIPTION.
alexisfowler93 2 months ago
The "trainer" yanks on the horse's face, then drives him away by making rythmic motion but being a horrible brute by hitting the horse. If he were a LOT gentler, a LOT nicer, and a LOT more expanative about what he was doing, and if he KNEW what he was doing, he'd be ok. But he's obviously confusing the poor horse by dragging him toward himself then forcing him away.
CherubHorse 2 months ago
i hope that trainer goes to hell! whose right is it for a random stranger to train a horse without permission of the owner and still be too darn ignorant to know it was wrong and stop, you could get the police to become invloved and this could be your evidence. bastard ' trainer' man

he is tapping her ? doesn't look like a serious beating to me just saying
96drummer2 2 months ago
@96drummer2 1.) Listen to the video with audio. That loud smack is quite a bit more than a tap. A tap would NOT make Chase react so fearfully. 2.) Chase is a gelding. The idiot repeatedly called him a her, as you can hear in the one with audio, even though he was well informed otherwise.
alexisfowler93 2 months ago
@alexisfowler93 You know, don't listen to anyone who are saying "oh it was just a tap." That obviously was NOT just a tap. You have every right to disagree with what someones doing to YOUR horse.
mshorselover08951 2 months ago

What a stupid * that * man is. I felt really sorry for the horse.
sammybonnie 2 months ago
This so called trainer should have someone hit him in the cheek bone! He makes a comment that it makes the horse shy away from him...no duh! The idea of "pushing" the horse's shoulder by only having your hands close NOT on the horse is good, but to actually hit? He should not be allowed anywhere near a horse. This colt is beautiful and the only this this "trainer" did was make him head shy. I'm sorry for you and your horse

Well actually, I didn't see him hit the horse a single time, how can you beat up a horse without actually hitting him????????? The horse already seems head shy.
chance666ify 2 months ago
@chance666ify Listen to the one with audio, you hear him actually hitting the horse if you for some odd reason can't see it. The horse wasn't head shy prior, he was used to people treating his face with respect not whopping a hand at it!
alexisfowler93 2 months ago
@alexisfowler93 Well you were there so you would know better than I. But from what I saw, it just looks like the guy is shoving his hand in the horses face. Hopefully this beautiful pony got heaps of reassuring pats and cuddles and didn't take any nasty habits from the event. I can't think of one reason why someone would do that but maybe he had a point.......I just don't get that point!

@nextwarrensapp Catching him wasn't much of a problem, since this man didn't halter him I guess he didn't worry too much about that part.
alexisfowler93 2 months ago
that's not training a horse, that's being a complete dick! there are some fantastic horse trainers out there who want to do all they can to help with a certain problem, then there are people like him who teach nothing apart from to be very wary of men. A friend of mine had the same happen to her pony and he hates men now after being "trained" by some guy who thought hitting horses meant that they behave.
Good luck with your horse in the future, he really is beautiful :)

toastierox 2 months ago
TheJadeamp242 2 months ago
@TheJadeamp242 "Listen to the one with audio, you hear him actually hitting the horse if you for some odd reason can't see it. In return he gets hit in the face every time, just for following command.

sorry your horse had to be in this situation. i can tell without the audio that he is creating a "scenario" for the audience by jerking the horse's head in as if he was a horse that was "pushing" his way in. then he goes and "fixes" the problem (which is no way a correction. i've put ground manners on many horses from drafts to mini's and never once have i hit or threatened to hit a horse's head to move them away). so he screwed your horse both ways >:(

omg im sorry,i know how it feels. my Arabian was giving me problems one day when I was training her and my uncle came with a whip and hit her a couple times. Missna1234 2 months ago
It works!

i think i know what he was TRYING to do....but he had no phases, there is suppose to be phase 1, phase 2, phase 3, and phase 4.
