Poor Gladys Kravitz, all she ever says is "abner LOOK" check out the Bewitched Electric Garage Door opener episode on youtube, she drives HER 1965 Impala through her garage!hysterical!
General Motors supplied "Captain {later, Major} Nelson's" Pontiacs from the first season; note the frequent use of extended outdoor sequences where he leaves from, or arrives at, his house in his '66 Pontiac GTO in season one. GM didn't sponsor the show {Liggett & Myers was the "primary sponsor" in season one}, but they DID have a deal with Screen Gems/Columbia to provide all the cars seen on it; on "BEWITCHED", that was considered reminding the viewer "who the sponsor was".
When GM was an automotive great. Now, only a shell of its former self, a victim of gross mismanagement, greed, and the UAW. They've had over 30 years to reform but chose not to.
GMs not the only car company that hasn't reformed...and I get sick of hearing people diss the UAW. If not for them, my Mom who became gravely ill in the late 80s would have been fired with no compensation whatsoever after working for them for 20 years. The UAW fought for her and greatly helped my family so any of you who hate unions, think about what they do before you diss them!
You'd think they could give us some of these as bonus features on the dvd set along with the original openings and closings. Boo on Sony! Thanks to you though for posting these rarely seen gems.
After 69, or was it 70, Pontiac sponsored the cars for Bewitched. Who doesn't remember watching " I Dream Of Jeannie " for Barbara Eden and all the GTO's Tony Nelson drove ?
Chevrolet had a 5-year contract to be the alternate sponsor (first with Quaker Oats, then with other companies) for "Bewitched," from '64-65 through '68-'69. Chevrolet dropped sponsorship after that--and dropped their sponsorship of "Bonanza" after '69-'70--because they felt they were reaching the same old audience year after year.
Larry Tate drove a '70 Bonneville convertible in the Samantha-goes-to-Salem storyline, but there were far fewer car scenes after Chevy dropped their sponsorship.
who would have thought. "a marvelous age we live in" all because of tilt steering wheel. wow. i bought a new car a year ago and just found out the wheel tilts. i was more into the navigation system. its all relative..
Darrin had a Corvair convert, then a Malibu convert, then 67,68,69 Camaro converts. Larry Tate had a Corvette most years on the show. What automotive history!
I think they had the Corvair and the Malibu in the '65 model year since Samantha learned to drive in one of the early episodes (Paul Lynde was Harold Harold, the driving instructor--"Carefultheresamovingvanupahead!" ...and they used the split-in-half '65 Impala Shell used in some of their Platformate commercials that year.)
That's why General Motors insisted on PLENTY of outdoor scenes featuring their Chevys {and some of their other models} during the five seasons they sponsored the show, 'bongo'. The more "placement" of their product during the episode, the better! In fact, one 1966 episode, involving a "soap box derby", was inspired by the fact that Chevrolet sponsored a national yearly competition of them at the time....
I remember one scene circa 1968 or 1969 when Samantha was trying to get a women's club to assist her in a project, and the six women in the scene got into their cars and drove off: First a Corvair, then a Chevy Nova, then a Chevelle SS-396, then a Camaro, then a Caprice, and finally a Corvette--a sneaky way to get all six Chevrolet car lines in a scene that ran no more than 30 seconds in that episode!
I remember that episode too, with all those middle aged "hens" driving off in what should have been their teenage sons hot-rods. They could have had a heck of a drag race scene right there!
Because Chevy was the show's primary sponsor between 1964 and '69, "Sam" and Darrin" not only drove their sponsor's models throughout most episodes, they often "pitched" them at the end of the show- here, "Gladys" and "Abner Kravitz" {Alice Pearce & George Tobias) have a chance to say a good word about Chevys, too! This was from '65....
What a great era that was for TV shows, cars and life.
Can someone send me back in time?

To think Obama and Bush would bail out the bankers and let GM go under. Who would ever have thought they'd be so venal.

Interesting to read that and then think what happened since this commercial came out.
