Also, I know Billy Joel sings this song, but it sure sounds like Tom Hanks is singing it in this version. I know the cast are background singers to this version of the song with Billy Joel, but if you listen to where the word "chance" is mentioned at 1:11, it sure sounds like Tom Hanks saying it! Maybe he really did sing this version?
I'm obsessed with Tom Hanks, so I asked for Bosom Buddies for Christmas. I got the complete set and finished watching all of the episodes a few days ago. I'm only 14, but I lover this show!
@bflat86 This is the full-length opening, and you can search for just about any show's opening theme and find a version just as long. What they use when they actually air the show is just an abbreviated version, but almost every show has a full-length (usually 1-2 minutes) version that was recorded, and if you look at some of those old TV Theme CDs, you'll find versions even longer than that. :-)
I mentioned this show to my girlfriend who says she never heard of it. I think it's because she's only been going with old guys like myself. this show came out before we discovered fire. I think it was when we were working on that wheel thing. (whatever).
it's a bummer that they couldn't use this theme for the dvd and had to use the alternate one, oh well at least i finally have the whole series thanks to big lots for only 6 a season! 12 bucks for the whole show hot damn!!!!
Did they really put absolutely no effort at hiding their masculine voices or did SeanBaby of Cracked.com fame just over-exagerate a weird element of a show again?
@Popcultureguy3000 He was honestly not exaggerating, they literally still talk like dudes. I was wondering the same thing and found the pilot and skipped around to parts where they dressed like women and umm yeah lol
Nice work. Click on my channel to see my 80's nostalgic collections; "80's TV Show Openings", "80's Saturday Morning Cartoons", "80's WWF Wrestling" and a "John Hughes Tribute"
this is essentially the story of barney frank and his 'friend,' except instead of it being a hotel, it's his house with an underage gay brothel in the basement
@Alex03000351 It's his song, but I think they had to do a different version after the pilot so they wouldn't have to pay Billy as much. And I think I read somewhere it's actually Tom Hanks singing here.
@Alex03000351 I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that maybe the reason it doesn't sound like "Billie" Joel is because it's not him singing it.
I love watching the daily show, seeing a reference made on the show then heading to youtube to check it out, only to find that everyone else is doing the same thing.
Just watched Tom Hanks on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and he mentioned this show so I looked it up. I probably don't remember it because this was about a year before I was born!!! Hanks wasn't kidding about "not worrying about the shots and just having fun." That seems like an accurate description of the filming this show! The good ol' days!
Loved this show. Knew the song by heart I would of never thought that many years later I would be watching Tom in movies like Forrest Gump and Castaway with my kids. Two movies they love. "Life is like a box of choclates" oh and don't forget his voice in Polar Express and Toy Story two more movies my kids love. Wow.
@kimmy1984 Music rights are typically for a specific time period for a specific use. Rebroadcast 30 years later on a cable network was obviously not part of the original contract. The studio/network probably asked Billy Joel (or whoever owns the song these days) how much they would charge to use it today and it was too expensive, so they just used another song.
@Hoopermazing Tom is fairly close to Peter Scolari and was to Wendy Jo Sperber (RIP). He helped pay her medical bills in her last years. Not sure about the rest.
that was a comical show, and Scolari's career arc didn't quite match Hanks', though I think he was the better juggler. Funny to see Donna Dixon with top (alphabetical) billing. And Sperber is gone now.
As for men dressing as women, the hands and Adam's apples give it away.
What was the theme song they used when the show was in syndication? I saw the show on USA about 20 years ago with a different theme song that says "Never gonna shake me loose."
You had to wonder who in the hell would buy these guys as women. They totally seem like dudes in drag. The Billy Joel theme song made this show, and it's what I remember most from it. The actual series was very novelty like Mork and Mindy, but certainly not groundbreaking, Emmy winning comedy like Cheers.
@Xcorgi I don't think he entirely gave it up, granted he doesn't do comedy much anymore but when he was on SNL a couple years ago and played a moronic version of himself on Celebrity Jeopardy it was priceless
@shayarzachary You are correct! This was just the beginning of forcing homosexuality on people. They figure if they introduce it slowly then over time... Well look at things today... That show along with hundreds more pushing the gay agenda... Sad really...
Tom Hanks went from this show to one of the biggest movie stars in the world, and poor Peter Scolari is left to memories of this show and conversations about Tom that always start off, "I remember..." - the lowest form of conversation since it is not advancing the conversation. Damn Tony Soprano was so right.

I love this song! I remember hearing this on the radio when I got a little older, after the show ended, I got so happy. I had no idea it was a real song Lol! Oh yeah, the show was great too!
@bitchingood Same here man....when I was a kid my dad used to watch reruns of this 20 years ago......and i always remembered this song but for years i forgot what show to put it with.....well i finally rediscovered it hot damn!!!!
@NevadaWrangler Ahhh yes, those were the good days. Back when talent and a great theme song meant something. Hey, do you remember the theme from the "Gary Shandling" show lol?
The chemistry between Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari was magic--Abbot & Costello caliber, those two! ~ Loved Wendy Jo Sperber.. another grand talent gone all too soon~
Great show, and all the women were gorgeous (except 'Buffy' and 'Hildegard'!) I probably saw every episode in its original run in the early 80's. But you can tell it's filmed in L.A., not NY...notice that when they're jogging through the park, there are palm trees!
@mientememami Who the hell was openly gay? Did you miss the part about them dressing as women so they could live in a female only apartment building? Guess you also missed Tom Hanks' character saying he was crazy about the blond.
@Cancrizans You're right. I guess Tom Hanks's character wasn't exactly OPENLY gay if he was using that blonde lady to fool people into thinking he was straight. I guess he was a closeted homosexual. Thanks for the clarification, Cancrizans. But still, to have two homosexual men in love, cross dressing, and cohabiting on television was probably a significant step forward for gay rights.
@mientememami You obviously never watched the show. There was not even the remotest hint or suggestion that either of the "cross dressing" male characters were gay in any way. They weren't even "cross dressing" in the commonly accepted use of the term...they were dressing like women to find a low rent apartment. Is that stupid? Of course. But it was a deliberately silly convention used to create funny situations....as most sitcoms usually do....o.O Neither of them were into each other AT ALL.
@Cancrizans I watched the show all the time as a kid (although I don't know if episodes were still being produced or if they were simply in syndication). I understand if you don't support the decision of two gay men to live together. I understand that you find it to be a "silly convention." I'm just saying that I think it was a really brave show to depict such a thing. I think the two actors did a wonderful job of portraying the love between two young, virile, transvestite men.
At this point I think you are either trolling me,or do not speak native English and missed the entire point of the show. What I meant by a "convention" is a situation deliberately concocted for comedic effect...in this case they threw the two guys into the ridiculous situation of having to pretend to be women to maintain their cover and not lose the apartment, when in reality they were drooling over the beautiful girls in the show THE WHOLE TIME. How you don't see that is beyond all reason tbh.
@Cancrizans While I disagree with your assessment that their lifestyles were sinful, I respect your right to an opinion. You are very perceptive. English is not my native language, and I woefully regret the fact that I am unable to communicate with indigenous parlance. I am, nevertheless, gradually (you might even say testudinously) learning your beautiful language and earnestly appreciate your willingness to engage me in such a stimulating tête à tête. I apologize for my lack of eloquence.
@haroof Well it's definitely not Billy Joel singing it, nor is it Peter Scolari...It certainly sounds a lot like Tom Hanks voice singing it - rumor has it that he did, but the website Songfacts(dot)com asserts it was actually performed by singer Bertie Higgins - if you listen to Higgins' song "Casablanca" (1982) the background music sounds strikingly similar to "My Life" (1978) but it doesn't sound like the same voice as this. My vote is in favor of Tom Hanks!
Wow, that foo Tom Hanks has pretty much grown up on TV, he's has been on TV for so long, we've watched him grow from young to old ON TV!, LMAO, and they make it look so easy!, that's what you call a professional in your field!
It's funny how it's been about 20 years since I've seen this show but i guess my mother must have watched it alot because I remember the credits COMPLETELY!!
This had an episode that I found troubling. In high school Henry is asked out to the prom by a cute girl who also happens to be deaf. He lies and tells her he's busy that night. He takes another girl to the prom and is surprised by the deaf girl, who is escorted to the prom by her father. Henry runs off without even an explanation. Later he runs into her as an adult and does the same thing. But the sweet girl forgives him, saying she understands. She should have punched him in the nose!
I always thought these guys were gay living together! LOL I kind of makes sense, they are together every minute and they dress in drag! LOL! nothing wrong with it, but I just makes you think they are partners! :)
Tearjerker of a tune right? I belted this one out at Karaoke BLeu..."Wha's the stand up routine though? Like the strip? Gots to be the strip right? The show had a decent premise right?
bromance.

Cancrizans 1 year ago
@Cancrizans I watched the show all the time as a kid (although I don't know if episodes were still being produced or if they were simply in syndication). I understand if you don't support the decision of two gay men to live together. I understand that you find it to be a "silly convention." I'm just saying that I think it was a really brave show to depict such a thing. I think the two actors did a wonderful job of portraying the love between two young, virile, transvestite men.
mientememami 1 year ago
At this point I think you are either trolling me,or do not speak native English and missed the entire point of the show. What I meant by a "convention" is a situation deliberately concocted for comedic effect...in this case they threw the two guys into the ridiculous situation of having to pretend to be women to maintain their cover and not lose the apartment, when in reality they were drooling over the beautiful girls in the show THE WHOLE TIME. How you don't see that is beyond all reason tbh.
Cancrizans 1 year ago
@Cancrizans While I disagree with your assessment that their lifestyles were sinful, I respect your right to an opinion. You are very perceptive. English is not my native language, and I woefully regret the fact that I am unable to communicate with indigenous parlance. I am, nevertheless, gradually (you might even say testudinously) learning your beautiful language and earnestly appreciate your willingness to engage me in such a stimulating tête à tête. I apologize for my lack of eloquence.

tom hanks is singing the theme song.
tranurse 1 year ago
@tranurse LOL Tom Hanks is NOT singing the theme song.
haroof 1 year ago
@haroof Well it's definitely not Billy Joel singing it, nor is it Peter Scolari...It certainly sounds a lot like Tom Hanks voice singing it - rumor has it that he did, but the website Songfacts(dot)com asserts it was actually performed by singer Bertie Higgins - if you listen to Higgins' song "Casablanca" (1982) the background music sounds strikingly similar to "My Life" (1978) but it doesn't sound like the same voice as this. My vote is in favor of Tom Hanks!

This show would be the starting point of a solid small-screen career for Pete Scolari.
I'm not sure if the other fellow ever went on to do anything after this.

I can understand they didn't want to pay for Billy Joel's recording of the song, but this singer is terrible.

I think probably has the best theme song ever, since it is done by Billy Joel. In fact it is way too good for this show.

@Aproxy2 Well, it is a Billy Joel song but it's not him singing it here. Oddly enough it sounds like Tom Hanks singing.
