  • hey davie your flies always seem to stand out from the rest..

would a pheasant tail nymph work well on a small river/stream?

  • Hi fifanic,

Thankyou...It's a great fly for rivers and streams and even lochs as I have caught more fish on this nymph pattern than any other I have tyed....

    All the best Davie

  • Hello Sir, wanted to say thank you for for sharing with me your gift, and helping me. Turning to the vise now. Excited

  • Good videos. I like yuur fly Davie.

    Good Fishing. A+

  • Hi Davie, Do you have to use wire for this one?

Greatly enjoy your videos, from an Irishman in Newfoundland Canada.

PS: Managed to get Rimmel 60 seconds here!

  • Hi davidfay100,

I like using the wire the most but you don't need to, you can easily use a plain coloured or metallic thread with great effect..

  • Hi Davie Thank you very much. Can,t wait to try it.

  • Hi Davie Could you tell me is this fly anygood for stillwater please.

  • Hi TheEaglehawk4,

I worked for over 10 years at a trout fishery and if someone saw me catching fish when the fish weren't rising then they all knew I was fishing a pheasant tail nymph as it's by far the best fly you could have in your box. The colours that I used most were black, natural, claret, natural dyed lime green, all colours of olives and any other colour you can find is worth tying and trying..ATB Davie

  • Until I watched this video I just couldn't get a decent looking fly now I'm making them perfect every time and Hope thye produce well here in Virginia I'll be sure to let you know Great job Dave keep up the great tying .

  • Thanks Davie for sharing this. This pattern has proven to catch fish here in the North Carolina Mountains. Great patterns.

  • Hi teachrtec,

Out of all the flies that I have tyed for trout this is easily the most effective pattern I have used, many thanks for letting me know how you got on with it...

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail

Hi Davie, Wonderful series of tying videos! I was also intriqued by your background music. As always, it pays to be attentive till the end of class, and I noticed Sean McPhail as the composer. Possibly a relative? Would his music be available commercially?

  • Hi Davie, just watched this video again and you showed a second fly and said you could dub some material on it, how do you dub wire? still like this fly though could you use it on stillwater the same as a river. Regards Alan

  • Hi Alan,

It is as easy to dub onto wire as it is with thread..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie, great fly, I didn't no you could tye a fly with wire throughout and no thread great idea i'll have to get a ceramic bobbin holder and have a go. Davie can i ask a question can you use hooks with a straight eye and not a slanted one, as i've never seen anyone tye a trout fly with a straight eye. Regards Alan

  • Hi Alan,

You could use whatever hook you like as this is a great pattern, as you will find out when you fish it....

  • I am a novice at both fishing & tying

Initially saw the norvice in action but was so impressed with the results that can be achieved with less equipment. Your attention to detail is very impressive.

Have you seen thi girls tying videos

    PiscatorCemZ

  • Hi Leydigg,

Thankyou for the kind words, I have saw the girls tying and their videos as they subscribed to my channel..

    All the best Davie

  • you never mentioned what size wire do you use? utc xsmall?

  • Hi termite122,

XSmall wire would be the easiest to use especially from size14s down and small would be better for 12s and above...

    All the best Davie

  • Thanks for this video and the many others you've so generously shared. Question: What brand and style hook do you use for this and the hare's ear? It looks like a TMC 3769, but I can't be sure. Also, do you find yourself fishing one particular size of the Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, or Caddis Nymph Pupa on new and/or familiar water? In all three patterns it appears that you are using the same style hook. Again, thanks for your time. Kind regards.

  • Hi tarzanwillie,

The brand of hook I use mostly is Kamazan which is one of the most popular used in the U.K but TMC is a great hook which I like to use in smaller flies..The patterns you metioned I mostly fish in size16s to12s which would easily catch you a fish on most waters..

  • Hello Davie,

How do you fill the small bobbin from the big spool?

    Thanks, Thierry

  • Hi Thierry,

I put a small piece of dowling into a drill that fits the spool and spin the wire on..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie

Thanks for all the great videos. I have been using a Veniard's ceramic bobbin holder and UTC extra fine wire but the wire keeps breaking on me. This happens at all parts of the fly and looks a bit like the wire is being twisted as it comes out the holder. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

I've only ever used one bobbin holder which has never let me down when using wire, is the Tiemco heavy duty ceramic. But you must adjust the arms of the bobbin holder so that the wire flows smoothly from it. Try this on the ones you have first, If this doesn't work then I would look at buying a Tiemco.

Let me know how you get on...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie

Like so many things its easy when you know how. I adjusted the bobbin arms and no more problem. I had never thought to adjust them before just used them as the were. Thanks for the advice and all the videos, they have done wonders for my fly tying.

    Jimmy

  • cool, your videos make me wonder what your face looks like, lol, great fly.

  • hi davie , were dd you get the bobbin holder ??

    Tommy milligan

  • Hi Tommy,

The bobbin holder I use is made by Tiemco, it can be bought in may shops especially if they deal with Veniards..

    All the best Davie

  • Its working now,

I have already seen this video a few times before but i am going to tie up a few now,

  • There is a problem with this video i cannot view it, i have tried in with-out success the last 3 days?

  • Hi Roeboy93,

I have no problem viewing the video on both my landline connection and wireless.. I'm not sure what's wrong on your side..

    All the best Davie

  • what size wire do you use?

  • Hi sasquatch446,
