I've noticed in a large number of your videos a moment in which the seemingly random, blobs of color suddenly, and rather instantaneously, form this very discernible picture. It is rather cool. Numerous times I have looked away only to look back a few seconds later to find a realized picture. It's probably just my artistic amateurish-ness.
@Double0Panda Haha thanks! It's not your amateurishness, I feel that way too. Sometimes the painting never turns that corner and I abandon it. Experience and practice is what'll give you the tools to make it happen. And while I'm on this youtube page, I figure it's appropriate to say I did this video 3 years ago and cannot stand to look at this painting anymore.
@CIDVICIOUS831 Just one layer usually, for concept sketches like this. Exceptions being when I want to add an effect (like the flare in this painting), or if I want to try something risky late in the game, etc. I will do stuff like that on a separate layer, and then typically will flatten it down so it's one layer again, before I continue painting.
@94GOOGLE94 hey thanks! You can download my brushes at: marcobucci (dot) com / brushes.zip - (you'll have to fix the address due to YouTube not letting me actually type it out...)
@94GOOGLE94 You can load .tpl files in the Tool Presets window. Just click that little arrow and you'll see 'load tool presets'. Then, when the brush is selected, my brushes will show up in that list.
i have a question what about for newbies? what are your suggestions for first doing digital painting because i am not sure what kind of brush settings to use.
dude im an aspiring artist and i love your videos and your style. so far i draw mostly characters but i know ill have to learn landscapes eventually so thats how i found your videos. i was wondering if you got like a degree in graphic art or something; cuz thats what i am hoping to do. just curious xD thanks for the vids!
P.S. sorry if its a stupid question i just love drawing and am looking for any way to get into this line of work haha
@c0le393 Hey man - cool! I didn't really go to school for this. I started my learning through some traditional figure drawing classes (which I highly recommend), then started to learn painting by trial and error at first...then taking cues/studying from other painters, and books/DVDs of course are great. Then got into plein air painting as I became a little more experienced. Bottom line is studios notice good work, so keep practicing any way you can.
@marcobucci Wow, thanks for answering so fast! oh and when you mentioned books and DVDs im planning on ordering yours very soon. keep the vids coming! and thanks again!
hi in the beginning, at 0:48- 52 you put a brush stroke and then was it grediant or lense lightning. ???
I am just starting to paint digitally. and i am a huge fan of your videos. but kind of disappointed at the low number of your uploaded videos. please we newbies want gurus like you to teach us really!
@Zaishe5757 That was a circular gradient, on the 'screen' function. Another way to do the same thing is to make a new layer, set THAT to screen mode, and do a regular circular gradient on it. Then I just adjusted the opacity of the gradient until I was happy.
@T3echUL3ss0n Technically yes, you could do this with a mouse. But It would be quite frustrating, due to lack of precision movements, and no pressure control. Of course, if you don't yet have a tablet, I would definitely try using a mouse, and just save for a tablet :) The Wacom Bamboos are pretty cheap these days!
@marcobucci I know, but i have yet do decide whether I want to pursue painting, so I'm quite hesitant in spending a hundred bucks on a Wacom Bamboo. Besides, I have quite a high-end mouse. I guess i'll just have to wait and see.
@DangerGuy10 Yup, it's my job :) I don't 'sell' these paintings per se...I work in the film/animation/video game industry as a matte painter and concept artist.
@ryofulance Thanks! And yes, my most recent game project was for Lucas Arts' upcoming release of Monkey Island 2 Special Edition! Be sure to check that out if you're a fan of that franchise!
Lawl. You'd take so much shit for using lens flare on an art forum hahaha, but overall - really well done for 40 minutes man. I agree the right side there looks a little wtf, but other than that everything else reads really well for what you were going for with the looking at the sun thing.
@meribdal At 4:08? You mean those gradients I put in the right and left side? I just picked a warm color, and used the gradient tool on 'multiply' mode. That darkens the entire gradient area down using the warm color I selected. Good for making big, overall changes to your picture.
Marco. A quick question which will hopefully not take a lenghtly amount of your time. what was it you did to that orange brush stroke to make it then glow into the sun. creating realistic lighting from the sun is one thing i find very difficult. I would appreciate any useful tips or information.
Just watched the video to see which part you were referring to. The effect that happens at 0:51 was done on a new layer. I filled the layer with black and set it to 'Screen' mode (or maybe Linear Dodge). Then I picked a warm, deep colour and used the circular gradient. After that I just adjusted it using hue/saturation to get just the temperature I wanted. Sometimes I'll flatten that down, sometimes I like to keep it on its own layer.
Thank you Marcco. That's the exact part i was referring to. I Appreciate you getting back so quickly. This will help a lot hopefully lol ; shall try it out now.
Ps you're work is very inspirational! thank you for uploading this videos!
hey dude, great paintings! and lots of really good advice and tips, do you work for a company or freelance? is it a hard industry to get into? i would love to be a digital matte painter or concept landscape artist :)
Thanks! I work for an animation studio as a matte painter. Every now and then I do some concept stuff on a freelance basis. Although usually I keep my personal time for my pursuit of fine art.
If your skills are up, you will break into the industry no problem. Just gotta put in the "time in the gym" in order to put yourself in the position to get noticed!
i have a question , do you know what kind of "brush types" most painters in the world use?... Cause if i know this i can learn how to make those realistic looking(design of background) effects.... that will give for example, my painting a more realistic look. Cause this will be handy when i animate some character drawings
There are some default brushes being used here, while other brushes are custom brushes that I made in Photoshop. Some of them start with the 'dry media' brush set, and I adjust the tablet controls and add texture, etc.
Other brushes are made from scratch with a custom shape, then adjusting the brush settings in the same way.
Most professional painters using photoshop will create their own brushes this way. I'm sure there's a lot of free online tutorials on how to do this.
wow...great sense of values and shapes...it is amazing how quickly you get your pictures to "read"....you take a lot of artistic knowledge and really make it seem simple....pretty incredible stuff...
any great books on how to use the basics for photoshop cs2? or corel painter x. im a comic book artist my self and want to work on enviorments and other sorts
It's been awhile since I've looked into books on the software, but I do remember learning a lot from Don Seegmiller's books. He writes about both Photoshop and Painter. I'd definitely check those out first.
