Star Trek was very ahead of its time in 1966, had it been presented to a different network with more foresight than NBC, it might have run longer than 4 years. Nevertheless, thankfully it was accepted after being given a second chance, and continues to be the finest sci fi series of all time.
I agree with the fact that the episode currently available should be the only version, because it doesn't clash with the format of the other episodes.
However, when the remastered version came out, I don't see why both versions could not be on the disc, with enhanced special effects. Like a spectacular CG of the milky way galaxy as Kirk makes his alternate log about leaving Earth behind.
Oh well. Can't always get what you want. And it really isn't that big a deal.
The dunderheads at NBC told Roddenberry to ditch his original concept and rewrite the show as a space western. At least the episode that finally aired wasn't as bad as this laughable version.
To be honest, I like the episode that actually aired because it is constant with the rest of the series. This was something more like what you have seen in shows of the 1950's. Television had been evolving through the 60's and into the 70's. This version may have been taken as "Too Hokey." However, this is a good historical cut. I may buy it, if it's on sale somewhere. Where would I find this?
It is interesting to note that the original structure of this pilot, where Spock is actually second officer and Gary Lockwood's character is Executive officer. This was to have been the command structure that Roddenberry wanted in Star Trek Phase II, the failed series that turned into Star Trek the motion picture, and of course STNG. Where there is a human first officer and Cmdr Data, as a Spock-like replacement is 2nd officer.
I could have sworn that in late 1969 or in 1970, I actually saw this version of the second pilot broadcast as part of the "Star Trek" rerun package on WTEV (now WLNE) min Providence.
It's interesting how the 2nd pilot has more of a feeling of being in space. As brilliant as the 1st pilot is, I somehow get more of a stronger vibe of space, or of a mysteriousness of the story presented. I even prefer some of the special effects shots of the Enterprise in the original than the remastered version, ie., the shot of the enterprise at the start of the second segment, coming back from the barrier...it's just more interesting than the remastered version.
What a fascinating peek at just how far the show evolved. How lucky we are all that they got a second bite at the creative apple. It's amazing how most of the changes polished and refined the show to the jewel that is became. I'm only sorry to see that when it came to the women of the Enterprise, the producers actually took a step backwards from how the pilot in how they chose to dress the women, and even the role of women in space.
@mikethegent they could not gary mitchell was dead if he had not died then yes but in reality star trek 2 was a perfect excuse to use khan from space seed because he was very much alive anyway blame the writer of where no man has gone before even though gary was powerful in the end good old phaser rifle rock one two punch won
@luigi19987 if Gary Mitchell survived that rock sealing him that makeshift grave...hed have definitely wreaked havoc on all villains....whether it be Romulans Klingons...Khan Noonian Singh or even Gary Seven....
@mikethegent quite true had he survived he would have been immortal however it still is a mystery as to if he did die or was just sealed in a makeshift tomb still if abrams does indeed bring him back with the monies he has at his disposal for the seqauel he is sure to make mitchell evn more pwerful if he is indeed included
Great job! FYI, the shot at the 5 minute mark was reused in Man Trap up until just before Gary Mitchell enters as part of the collage of scenes of crew moving around when Kirk declares an alert.
Well done sir! An excellent reconstruction. I hope Paramount take note and release this version in the Season 3 Blu-Ray set, as is rumoured to be the case. :-)
According to Mike Okuda, who worked on remastering Star Trek... we will finally see this happen. The whole original 2nd Pilot has been put onto the Blu-ray set, under the cunning extra feature title - 'Where No Fan Has Gone Before' :)
Mr. Kelso? That would be funny if it were Kelso from That 70s Show.
collegeman1988 6 days ago
@collegeman1988 You know he would spend most of the show blowing up stuff with the ship's phasers.

At 5:27 we can watch George Takei wearing a blue uniform. He doesn't appear on the released TV version of this episode.

@reddranger Yes, they left the galaxy a couple times. For example when the Kelvin took over the ship they headed for the Andromeda galaxy.

If I recall there was hardly any humour in the second pilot apart from the chess game.

Why didn't they go directly to motion pictures? With a little more budget it would have been phenomenal on the big screen.
