Mt Vernon (for such a small area ) produces the MOST talent of ANYWHERE inthe U.S......Check the talent....Pete n C.L,Heavy D(Petes cousin),Talent,JB Smoove,Ben Gordon,The McCray Brothers (Rodney & Scooter),The Williams Brothers (Gus & Ray),Lowes Moore,Earl Tatum (these guys all played in the NBA) AND LAST BUT definitely not least....Mr Denzel Washington.....plus others I probably dont know/forgot. Lets see if ANY other town the size of "Money Earnin" can top that list.
@missayawk no doubt Vernon rules shit....let's not forget that Dick Clark (American Bandstand), Al.B.Sure, Entouch, are all also from the VERNON!.....
That loooks like the basement from the back of the Main Ingredient LP. And Pete's scratching Rob-O's freestyle from Mecca and the soul brother. Damn, it's a shame rap music is so unbelievably shit these days...
@JimmyTheGentConway It's from the Mecca and The Soul Brother LP (Track 11 - On and On, Rob O freestlye) "What's up Pete Rock, com get on the cut, Rock to the beat get wreck on the regular, Listen to me because I cause mass hysteria PEACE!"
Fuck this hip hop is dead shit. Hip hop is alive and well. Unfortunately the media has classified some pop/rap music, targeted at 13 year old girls as hip hop but just because they say it doesn't make it so. Again hip hop is alive and well your just not going yo find it MTV any more. Keep searching peace
@BongSau83 I refuse to accept that excuse. I never had to "search" for hip hop before, why should I do it now? MTV and BET need to get back on their shit and show quality music again!
@RockytheBear So you want the music handed to you on a platter? Those days are gone, get up off your arse and scrape the surface and you'll see there's plenty of good shit out there. And for the record I remember MTV and BET playing some awful shit between 92 and 96, the golden era still had some stinking piles of shit tracks.
@Etcher uh... yeah i want it handed to me! not only do MTV and BET no longer exist when it comes 2 quality music, but record stores (remember those?) no longer exist and neither does good radio. I am no longer 16 years old, I'm a responsible adult...therefore I don't have time to spend hours on the internet searching for one good song within an ocean of lousy ones. And the golden age of hip hop was 87-92....you probably weren't there.
@RockytheBear haha you dork. plenty of record stores in my town. I'm a DJ, I use serato, I buy records (vinyl) all the time. And people like you are the reason people say 'hiphop is dead'. Even the fact that you say you have to search for hours for one good song shows what a bellend you really are. See you later you old moany fart
wow. they even used to do freestyles. its amazing how drastically music changes when more new generations come up. but the new generation out now completely destroyed the principles of hip hop in general. they messed with the game too much....its gokd to change, but damn. lol
pass it((-:back in the dayz me and friends use the record this on vhs and audio tapes...still remember the whir on walkman headphones...GOOD OLD DAYZ-SAME STORY ALLWAYS.hip hop will never die!!!
What..what.. what... What's up Pete Rock come get on the cut!!!
Thanks for putting this dope shit up I've been searching for this clip for years. I used to have it in vhs but I think I may have taped over it. Thank you so much for bringing it to me... Hip hop in its purest form! Respect
anyone remember atune on mtv raps were two guys were on a dating show, talking about how they in love with the same girl from a pizza shop[ ect. i think they may have been called. PHAT AND UGG
If you were one years old you got to be my age like 18 or 19. Damn man I wish Hip Hop went back to these days. These rappers nowadays sound so fuckin lame. I honestly haven't heard a rapper put out any good song worth listening too. Makes me angry that I miss all the good stuff.
In a way I am happy that Im old enough to livethru the Golden Yrs of HH, but feel bad for the youngstas. I mean now you kids have to dig into the undreground just to get the good shit. Back then everything was good in the mainstream to the undergrounds. So much balance and diversity then. We had the wack dudes, but the GOOD far outwighed the BAD, We had the Video Music Box which showed 24/7 videos(commercial free) primarily HH/R&B mainstream /undreground. CLose to 1000 diffenrt videos. a day
MTV had the "Yo MTV Raps" BET had "Rap CITY", etc. Radio , the djs brought their own music (usually mix tapes) and took live cust req. We didnt hear tyhe repetitive BS like we do now. We probably heard over 200 songs a day as oppose to 50 of the same songs these days. I was in HS in the 90s. The vibe was just too diff. Well, WE are ALL hoping that the HH vibe and balnce comes back in the 2010s decade. Peace Out, bro.
thanks bro but they are some people this days that spit similar to this artist. they got good known folks like blu [blue & exile: below the heavens], Nero [Alive & Vibrant], Quest [Distant Travels Into Soul Theory]. they're good to me etc.
I honestly think any good hip hop that comes out in the future, is going ta be from artists that build & create new patterns off of older hip hop styles. Because HH has become (rhyme wise, subject wise, sound wise) so watered down, you almost have to go back to the past for complicated hip hop.
now it's a commercial business with no mercy..anyone trying to make something worth listening to is gettin' rejected by the greedy music & entertainment corperations..they only care about 1 thing..brainwashin' the clueless kiddies with fake nothin' 2 say rappers for nothin' but the mighty $.
pete rock came out at the right time, now he wouldn't even be plugged no more on the radio with the same music he did back then.
Is this clip from '91 or '92? Fab says he's going to play "the creator" video (which came out in '91) but the poster behind C.L., is from Mecca &Tthe Soul brother.
This was aired late '91. The Creator is off All Souled Out (as you no doubt know) which dropped late 1990/early 1991 and was followed by Mecca - maybe that was a fresh pressing of the LP behind CL's son, before it was out to the public. Damn, I love both those records!
Thanks for the info, Etcher! :) Pete Rock & C.L. were awesome. Not only was Pete use inventive samples & ingenious arrangement, but C.L. was a great MC & they always had a great message. You don't see that in rap anymore. Mecca's my fav album of theirs.
Yeah this was in 1991(winter) no doubt. I remember my brother and i were recording this on the VCR after playin Mike Tyson Punchout (Nintendo). lol we all loved this show. I was a Sophomore in HS that time and our footbal season just ended. So I had a lot free time just going to skool and working at Lil Caesars. lol Memories, yo Word Up! All that Universal love and respect we had for one another back then. U never heard someone say "HATER". SHit we need this vibe back, bro. 4 real.
Yep, you're right bro! I can't even listen to the new junk coming out. I mean, I try to keep an open mind, but with the weak rhymes, boring subject matter and poppy overused production, I can't stand it. I hear ya on the "hater" thing too. If a rapper puts out weak material, and someone calls him on it, then that rapper labels the person a hater (instead of just stepping up his game). Ya know, I was just thinking the other day, too, that CL was 1 of the few NY MCs that wasn't letting W. Coast
Gangsta rap rhyme patterns overttake his sound back in 92. He kind of played w/the G. Rap sound. I remember that every1 else was either into the rowdy posse kinda sound (like Redman), the Naughty sound, or the diggtty sound. They were all cool, but it seems like the G. Rap sound faded out a bit until Wu Tang & Nas brought it back

Well MTV used to actually play music, which i guess they had to since reality shows hadn't been invented yet.
Some people see it as what eventually did away with Rap. Once it was on MYTv it beagn to mainstream, and we all know what followed from that.
Still, during this period both mainstream Hip Hop and MTV were quality.
