China has a large percentage of renewables energys (fact), and plant more tree than anyone else (fact), which helps to offset carbon. In order to keep our 'modern' world fascade going the west exports its manufacturing industry to China. We don't make anything but the Chinese get all the pollutants and the cancer.
In short - i worry that our technology is too cheap. That the low price of a big screen LCD tv for instance, hides the pollution caused by it's manufacture, and lives lost.
None of us want to think that somebody has to die, for us to be able to enjoy a 50" LCD TV. But, can we guarantee that nobody dies?

I did a few years work with Tesco in the UK a few years ago. I was close to some of their buyers, and saw the efforts they go to to ensure issues like pollution are addressed, and fair working conditions are met.
However they only monitor the factory making the product being sold. The final step in the process.

In other words, turn-of-the-century Europe and America didn't realize the damage caused by toxic discharge. Modern-day China, by comparison, does.

Why does China need to follow in the stupid footsteps of the west? China has plenty of evidence from western industrialization that doing it without regard for people and environment isn't the way to go.
Sooner or later you're going to pay for it, so why not do it right in the first place? If you don't give a damn, many hundreds of thousands of people will be affected and the enviroment could be severely harmed and even more difficult to repair in the future.

China has a large percentage of renewables energys (fact), and plant more tree than anyone else (fact), which helps to offset carbon. Yes China has more polution, but has 4 times population- therefore an American make many times the pollution as a chinese (fact). China is trying hard and is putting more regulations in place. They not perfect, but remember that Europeans had the luxury of cheap energy for a long time. Look at up to date facts to see what China is, not rhetoric!

In short - i worry that our technology is too cheap. That the low price of a big screen LCD tv for instance, hides the pollution caused by it's manufacture, and lives lost.
None of us want to think that somebody has to die, for us to be able to enjoy a 50" LCD TV. But, can we guarantee that nobody dies?
It's quite terrifying.
China has so much potential, but the core question, is can we trust them when we offer them money for products, to deliver good living standards to their people?

I did a few years work with Tesco in the UK a few years ago. I was close to some of their buyers, and saw the efforts they go to to ensure issues like pollution are addressed, and fair working conditions are met.
However they only monitor the factory making the product being sold. The final step in the process.
I'm really worried about what happens before that final stage which is monitored by western companies.
Massively difficult issue to deal with!

This is so disgusting. No wonder something as wonderful as an iPhone is so cheap!
The problem I have is that I love my technology, i love my iPhone for instance. But it's very difficult because upstream in the manufacturing process, such great travesties are being committed against innocent people.
What can we do about this? We can't really say all technology must be built in Europe, US or Australia or Japan where standards are good.
It's such a massive problem!

By 2025, US Gov predicts 75% of America energy will be produced from wind turbines. Anyways .. What's relevant is that there are areas like this in China and all over the world that really show that human action has consequences. That alone should be an alarm sound towards cleaner energy. I think it has already done so, could be wrong but I am sure its emissions are higher. I don't really see that as a concern as I think this global warming stuff is a load of crap. The planet has always heated up and cooled off over its billions of years of history. I read in 40,000 years time that another ice age will occure. Only bad thing about China's pollution is the waterways, that does need addressing.

When Japan was a develop country, pollution invaded Japan! When UK started industrialization, Pollution invaded UK. And so is the U.S.A, and so is the world!!

Because only 2.8% of China's population is under poverty line.
That's 2.8% of 1.3 billion which comes to 3.7 million people.
The population under poverty line in the US...is another story. The pop. under poverty is 12% in the US. That's out of the 310 million people in the US that comes to around 3.7 million people in the US that are under the poverty line.
Btw, these stats are coming from very credible AMERICAN sources. ie the CIA.

@PowerLifterMann By definition of international standards, the percentage of Chinese that living below poverty line is indeed pretty that low and even lower now. 8% was the old figure.
