haha! I'm a bent-nailer too, though I raise the seam of the two boards on a small spline and hammer the side nails in place. When everything is proper, I remove one board - apply glue - replace it - pull the spline out and push the boards down flat which creates pressure. I tap the nails a little for good measure - run a wooden veneer roller down the seam to perfect the alignment and it's done. Nailing is simple, accurate, visible, and tactile - you always know if you have the joint right.
I'm very surprised that you haven't figured out some kind of clamp / gig to use at this step vs. bending individual nails each time you do this. WHY are you doing it this way? Is there no way to use a clamp board of some kind? Please advise.
My method works well, it's what I'm used to - I have been doing it this way for 20 years now. It is a clamp board - with more points of contact than any other method I have seen. The important thing is to hit the nails at the long edges near the bottom rather than the top to create the clamping action. You should try it.
My approach is pragmatic and perhaps more everyday. Sorry if it is not pretty!
