I loved my L reg 214 sli, had a slight leak of oil into the coolant channels but it never got worse than that in the time I had it and I was never any good at looking after it!
It was a proper grandad mobile in met gold/beige but on dry roads with 2mm tread on the fronts it was almost good round corners, despite the body roll.
Just a shame it came after owning a 205 GTI (times were tough), from one of the best handling fwd's to one of the worst is quite a leap!
Not to start an argument, but it was only beaten old rovers that had bad body roll, i recently got a 214SEi with 109k on the clock, quite a sturdy ride round corners, and had a 214i before hand which handled like a 3 legged donkey. I have driven 306's inbetween then and now, so its not a bias, and like you said you went from a 205GTI (lush cars IMO with amazing handling..) to a rover (pretty average handling .. )
loved my 214si, shame about the gaskets tho... mine went and a was gutted, pretty nippy for a 1.4 aswell, raced my m8 in his 1.6 focus n ate him till he caught me top end, great cars, ad hav anotha1 any day
I got an early 214si on an H plate, been on SORN for 8 months and it just started no probs at all.Sitting inside it made me realise how much i hate my much newer Hyundai.Tis now my task to get it back on the road!
I want my old 214 back!!! so much fun. Have an audi a4 2.4 now, great car, quicker than the rover, over 40, though not sure about 0-30! the rover has no end of character!!!! lovely cars!
cheap, im 17 and it costs me £500 a yr which is half what it was to insure a 1.0 8v 40bhp nova lol. k-series engines push out a lot more power than othe cars in their range 105bhp 4 a 1.4 is amazing
iv bought about 20 of em and atleast 18 where gasket failures after 1day, but i was killin them up forestry and they didnt cost more than £100 each, i found fiat engines got tha same rapid power for small engines.
and fuckin standard fords are under powered pieces of shit
60 in just about 8 seconds, pretty nice for a 1.4. i have a 214si and only recently got it so dont really wanna thrape the arse off it yet, its had one head gasket change before i had it so im happy i may not have to come up to that problem, and its a 1996 with 80k on the clock, its got the usual minor mods like K&N and exhaust upgrade so it feels fast, didnt know it was an 8 second to 60 car tho, its down as 10 on paper.

Off the line, those little 214's are great, very economical too - nothing after about 70 though.
The 218vi is a cracker...
