I'm kind of surprised how long this route was used considering the facts about it; let alone NS still keeping intact much as it is after it was placed out of service.
Anyway, the steepest grades allowed on the interstate highway system is 7% from what I've heard. Trucks are almost always in the slow lanes on those grades.
On Saluda hill with grades of 4.7% and 5.1%. It's astounding how so many trains have crossed it successfully and let alone safely.
i live a short trip to saluda grade i wish saluda grade was open again the last time i saw a steam train came through saluda grade was on nov 13 1994 i rode on the 611 excursion on october 23 1994i think 611 is the most beautful steam train that came through saluda grade
It's not. I don't know why people have all of a sudden started spreading these rumors. It's in the same condition (or worse) it has been in for the past eight years. It would take much longer than a month to get it operational again.

Cool. Do they have the runaway tracks like
the real hill. Where did you down load this at. It would be cool running 611 down that
grade.

why train were moving so slow?

They're limited to 20 mph uphill and 8 mph downhill on the Saluda stretch ( about 3-5 mi in length ), for safety reasons.
