Smyth had a right to be upset, but I would disagree with his assessment of being a "pushover" for years. Oilers had to trade their #1 dman in Janne Niinimaa in 03 just so they could afford to make #94 their highest paid player for a couple of years.
Alright, anyone who says ANY PLAYER, meant more to ANY TEAM than Gretzky, is a fucking moron. On a happier note, Smyth is great, and now that he's on the Avs, he will get the cup that he deserves.
I hope the Isles win so Ryan's value goes even higher LOL If Tanguay in Calgary get 5.25ish mill a yr Ryan's definately worth 5.5-6.5. Tanguay's a good player but nobody's Ryan Smyth.
Tanguay has post 60-70 point seasons since he came into the NHL..he won a Stanley Cup in 2001 following up to his contract raise so its worth the 5 million he makes..
The Oilers have screwed themselves ever since they let all those players go. Last year was an amazing run. I still think Carolina ran Roloson but the Oil were classy and didn't run Cam Ward. Good on the Oil for that but BOOURNS for the Oiler head office letting Ryan Smyth go. That would be like the Flames letting Iginla go. Lunacy.
Wow... he was completely different after getting traded yesterday. In tears that he has to leave. I guess making a stand wasn't something he was cut out to do. Shame on the organisation for making him do it. He meant more to the Oil than Gretzky did. They won a cup without Gretz. Without Smytty? Impossible.
One man's cast-off is another man's treasure. Thanks Oil, for one of the biggest blunders of all time. You guys dropped the ball. The next time you'll see Lord Stanley will be when Ryan brings it there for a visit.
It sounds like Ryan is saying that the Oilers will not win a cup anytime soon. Just watch and see Ryan! OILERS IN 2009!!

@kungpaobenji27 Well, when he's your number one D-man, you don't really have a number one D-man...

The difference between the gretzky trade and the smyth deal is the fact back then we had a whole team that created offence not just 5 or so players

Smyth was important to the Oilers but no where near what Gretzky meant. The Oil will continue to flow and eventually into the cup
