I think it's because he misses the first word or the mic isn't on, whatever and then he confuses the lyrics of the first verse "when i said by rights you smash every tooth" instead "when i said i'd like to...". Otherwise i can't hear anything else obvious. But you got to give to him that he keeps on singing as if nothing happened!

Nah, this was in May '86 and their last, to my knowledge, was The Tube in April '87 (unless you include their miming of Sheila Takes a Bow 13 days later, which was their last 'appearance') on live-music TV.

+1 Excellent band and I did love them in the 80s along with most Smiths fans. This video though makes two things about later Smiths efforts particularly relevent:

1/ the second guitarist, can't recall his name right now (Gannon?) looked way out of his depth & looks as if he was only there to help Marr out who could not be much bothered any more

2/ Rourke obviously looked out of his head on heroin/coke/speed/(instert latest 80s drug fad here) although IMHO his bass playing was always ace
