this was prefaced by andy kershaw saying "last night i tried to write a list of the truly great bands of the 1980's , bands who's recording and influence would endure - after nearly an hour i was staring at a list with only one name on it ... THE SMITHS "
This was my favourite ever smiths tv performance ( vicar in a tutu also played) and one of my favourite smiths songs too
baqck in the eighties I refused to listen to anything that wasn;'t the smiths for quite a while they were far and away the best band of that epoc. when they split - god was i pissed off still it allowed me to move on cos moz on is own wasn't the Smiths
morrissey once said that The Grey Whistle test was the most embarassing moment in the smiths lifetime, why would he say that, this seems to be a good live show
I think it's because he misses the first word or the mic isn't on, whatever and then he confuses the lyrics of the first verse "when i said by rights you smash every tooth" instead "when i said i'd like to...". Otherwise i can't hear anything else obvious. But you got to give to him that he keeps on singing as if nothing happened!
Nah, this was in May '86 and their last, to my knowledge, was The Tube in April '87 (unless you include their miming of Sheila Takes a Bow 13 days later, which was their last 'appearance') on live-music TV.
+1 Excellent band and I did love them in the 80s along with most Smiths fans. This video though makes two things about later Smiths efforts particularly relevent:
1/ the second guitarist, can't recall his name right now (Gannon?) looked way out of his depth & looks as if he was only there to help Marr out who could not be much bothered any more
2/ Rourke obviously looked out of his head on heroin/coke/speed/(instert latest 80s drug fad here) although IMHO his bass playing was always ace
Who'd have thought cuddly old Kershaw would've ended up stalking his ex??
Funny old world.
Great Smiths performance at the height of their powers. I cannot get the correct rhythm for the guitar on this, no matter how hard I try. Damn you Marr! Get round ours and show me how it's done.
Why do all the really talented bands part ways once they make it big. Why Morrissey and Marr can't put their differences aside for one large ass reunion tour?
NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL ANDY KERSHAW INTRODUCTION FOR THIS..
FORTUNATELY I AM A SAD TWAT AND CAN REGURGITATE IT VERBANTUM..
"LAST NIGHT I SAT DOWN AND TRIED TO MAKE A LIST OF THE TRULY GREAT BRITISH BANDS OF THE 1980s, BANDS WHOSE RECORDING AND INFLUENCE WOULD ENDURE. AFTER NEARLY AN HOUR I WAS STARING AT A SHEET WITH ONLY ONE NAME ON IT - THE SMITHS".

Well I'm glad to see that Thom Yorke isn't the only guy who dances like his left bollocks is stuck to his inner thigh.
alexbericheath 3 years ago
Hey I grew up loving The Smiths and in our clubs all the guys would dance like that. It was considered...normal?!
sticklemiss 3 years ago
Yeahh, I guess the times change and stuff looks weird out of context. I mean I love dancing weird, as long as you're feeling it!

What the hell is the Whistle Test? I hear no whistling from no one. Some British music program perhaps?
IKAIKA12345678 4 years ago
BBC2 music program. Orginally called The Old Grey Whistle Test in the 70s, it was resurrected in the mid-80s as "Whistle Test".
