If you watch this season you find out that a guy in the other lane fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the median and hit Mitch head on. It had nothing to do with him dropping the ice cream and/or picking it up. It was the other driver that killed him.

He drove straight into the truck and didn't have time to do anything because he wasn't paying attention, end of story.
