Membership in these units is all volunteer and as far as I know, none discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, or physical ability to maintain their non profit status (at least mine doesn't). Secondly, look at my facebook photos of the Gettysburg 2008 reenactment and you will see many African Americans portraying dismounted cavalry. If you are interested in this activity, find a unit near you and join. Recruit others to join with you.

@OzzyFan87 Well, like they say,"The Yankees are too tall and the Confederates are too fat." If you think you would look better, get in uniform and join a unit.. As for marching, I'm field artillery. We ride into battle or would walk along the side of the horses. The vast majority of field artillery gun crews in reenacting today have to "man handle" the guns ,some weighing over a ton, into position. Want to join us?

These men of course are hardly real Confederate soldiers...I mean if they were true to historic detail, their uniforms would be much more cobbled together, they would be underfed and half of them would be without shoes and much dirtier.

Of course re-enactors are just weekend warriors more or less, still you have to give them credit for spending their weekends doing this sort of thing. I know a few of them and they say its a great experience.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You do realize that the film was made in 2008 and not 1863? The average height and weight of the typical American has changed significantly in the past 147 years. Are you about 5'7" tall and weigh about 140 pounds? I do doubt it.

@Worldspining There is a group of reenactors in The Ukrain, the 5th Texas Volunteer Infantry. They travel over all parts of Europe with their wooden rifles. They aren't allowed to carry real rifles. They are allowed to fire caps only.
