Copyright law says that when covering a song you're allowed to rearrange it (i.e. sing an additional chorus, mix up the verses, have different music) but id you want to change the lyrics it takes a very long time to get clearance to do so. Same reason why Jack White says "my man" in the White Stripes cover of Jolene. Whether or not it's "gay" to sing the original means fuck all so everyone just shut up and listen to the song because that's why we all clicked on it
