Bad Karma: NBC didn't play this song during the Men's final (they played a cheesy alternative when showing highlights) so fate did not smile happily upon them in losing the rights to future Wimbledons! NBC will have their Wimbledon swan song at next year's 2012 Olympics, then it's bye bye... BTW- considering NBC way overpaid for the rights to the Olympics thru 2020, it's probably the main reason they were outbid by ESPN for Wimbledon...
@marcio3santos Interesting. I hadn't thought of it that way. Watch for NBC to use this and their Wimbledon theme during tennis at the London Games next year. They still use "Roundball Rock" whenever they televise Olympic basketball.
agreed, I am a bit surprised that NBC wont have coverage either. Was it also true that at one time HBO used to have a significant amount of coverage of Wimbledon? It's sort of a tradition to watch Wimbledon on NBC though. What's interesting is that with Tennis Channel around, it's almost most difficult for them to really be the exclusive carrier of the slams despite them being 'Home of the slams'
@odonnelljosh ok, i appreciate the response, didn't remember the details of how much coverage HBO aired actually but I'm glad I wasn't wrong in recalling that at one time HBO did cover Wimbledon at one point though not extensively. Now ESPN will pretty much cover Wimbledon as they do now with the Aussie Open. Living in the US, not sure that any other channels have coverage of Aussie Open other than Tennis Channel.
I was disappointed this year that they didn't use the portion between :12 and about :35 to head into commecial breaks between games like they always have in years' past. Also sad to hear NBC won't have any Wimbledon next year. It's been that way as long as I can remember. Both their opening and closing themes for Wimbledon have been among the most-recognizable for a long time.
@sdidovich1 ESPN's coverage is OK, but their theme music can't touch this theme music. Also ESPN will probably have that distracting bottom line running throughout every match. I hate that. I tuned in to watch the event your televising. I could care less about what's going on in some early-July baseball game. (Also, isn't that what the internet is for?)
@tmack85ive ESPN didn't use the bottomline for coverage of any of the 3 Grand Slams this year. I don't see why they would for Wimbledon next year. In fact, IIRC, Wimbledon bans them from doing it.
@nyyankees Yeah, I just watched the final on my DVR (I missed it live because of work) and thoroughly enjoyed the match, then waited feverishly for this theme to play over slow-motion shots of Djokovic's celebration. And no dice. So I jumped on here to say exactly what you said. Very depressing indeed.
From .15 to .27, is the tune used right before NBC goes to a commericial break during the championship matches. When I hear this tune, it automatically signifies you are watching Wimbledon.
This song always reminds me of the end of the singles finals when they do a slow motion replay of the winner dropping to his knees in an act of not only the thrill of winning a grand slam, but also the first true sign of how exhausted the player is. Always gives me chills down my spine.
@AJtheory The composer is Keith Mansfield, the British composer famous for some of the best music composed for the BBC. This music is only played on NBC during the Wimbledon finals. One of the best pieces of music i ever heard. When this is played during the end credits of Wimbledon on NBC, the feeling itself is fantastic.
As much Winbledon as I have watched, this music always reminds me of the year Novotna finally won...that forehand and the way she sunk to her knees weeping...
Anyone have that match? I'd settle for just match point and the celebration if anyone had it.
this brings back so many memories of 2008. does anyone have a recording of the 08 wimbledon final on NBC? mine got deleted and i want to watch it again so bad. i dont even mind the rain delays, in fact id like an unedited version even more
@VCHAGZ i think ive looked there, but i believe that they only have the BBC version. i mean thats fine, but i watched the NBC version at home and id just like that one better
yeah it's really amazing. this music used to remind me of pete's great moments in finals and now i associate it with roger (and a little bit rafa too because of those unbelievable 2007 and 2008 finals).
I really love the NBC olympic, NBA and Wimbledon.
This theme for me, is mostly associated with the best moments and victories of Venus Williams holding the rosewater dish and Roger Federer the golden cup.
Wow this music never fails to send chills up my spine every time i hear it. Awesome stuff. always makes me imagine i'm holding the Wimbledon trophy after winning the final
i dont even watch tennis,,but i always stayed on the channel when this theme came on,,,,,Classic!

@damonave HBO used to basically have what ESPN aired the past few years in the 90s, except a bit less coverage.

This music is so inspirational! Kudos to NBC for not screwing up this theme the way most networks love to do.

Great memories of this song, for some reason the match between Steffi Graf and Kimiko Date in '96 comes to mind lol

This song was also partially played on the NFL Superbowl XIV NFL1/2 hour segment (Steelers vs. Rams) back in 1980.
