Hello, would like to say your hair looks gorgeous. What do you use to moisturize and seal your hair?I also think the key to growth is moisture, moisture, and moisture. Very informative video.
I think we can also learn something from our white sisters. They wash their hair everyday or every other day. While that may not be the best thing for black hair they might have a point. By them washing their hair everyday they get a ton of water on their hair. Water= moisture. And thus, by your theory, water/moisture helps the hair to grow. just an observation.
@caw1091 i dis agree...i did the wetting the hair ewvey day and my hair was very dry...water is not moisture...and it never was..it hydrates temperarely and that it..oils are better way to hy drate your hair...moistuize more wash less is the key for black hair...water is a vehicle for adding moisture to your hair..and we use it as such, but many mistake what they are realy doing but they are doing it crazy enough
I had jheri curls back in the day. I believe it was even MORE drying than a relaxer which is why it had to be constantly moisturized. Once I had LONG hair for the first time in my life, I blow dried it and curled it with a curling iron. Not only would it not hold the curls, but it became very dry and brittle and broke off like crazy!! Imagine how healthy it would be without the chemical part of the process...natural and moisturized...really long and healthy I'm sure.
you are so right about that, JC is well , in let me tell you , grow so long from mosituring it 2 times a day , sometime even 3 times a day in my hair always stayed wet, in it grow so long , back when i was really young i would get relaxers in they just take my hair out , when i got the JC my length stayed in keep getting longer in longer, now i am natural , i am always mositiurzing more they 2 times a day, in my hair is growing :)
I can so relate to the Jherri Curl thing (lol) - My hair loved the moisture and the glycerin and grew like crazy. Your hair looks lovely in it's curly state.
WHY DO I ALWAYS THINK OF COMING TO AMERICA WHEN EVER I HEAR ABOUT JHERI CURLS?? DO YOU GUYS MEMBA THE SOUL GLO COMMERCIAL? LOL. AND WHEN THE SNOPPY DUDE'S FAMILY WERE SITTING ON THE COUCH GOT UP AND THERE WERE JUICE STAIN ALL OVER. LOL. UR RIGHT THO MOISTURE IS THE WAY TO GO.
Jerri curls has more moisture than the relaxer. I use to have jeri curls and the secret to long her is proper moisture and the jeri curls has much of that. Relaxer is more drying to be honest.
I only had a jeri curl for a short period so I can't remember if it really impacted my lenght or not.
Regarding your moisture point, I know that is something that I've struggled with since going natural. Besides on wash day (every Saturday) I become very lazy during the week with adding moisture to my hair and I've been trying to work on that.
@CallaLily40 you cant neglect your hair, no one on this earth will take care of your way the way you do, it'll trive best in your hand if you give it a little more love and attention, if you dont love you hair, please dont put in the hand of a stranger to love your hair, cause they wont...
This video is so helpful and so is your spray bottle method because my hair dries out sooo easily. I used to have dreadlocks and since i got them taken out last summer my hair has been very fragile. (it was short to begin with about jaw length) and ive been growing it out in protective styles. Its about shoulder length now but it still has not dropped. I was wondering how long it took for your air to drop and how long it was.
@pharaohmonkey in tis curly states my hair almost reaches sholderler length, im hoping another 3-4 months b4 i actually get there, i'll be 2 years posts relaxer this november, i was 18 months post relaxer may 21 just past, but depending on your curl pattern you may recieve more or less shrinakage than i do, ive seen on lady whos hair reached sholder length when dried, when straighten she was at mid back,
This is so true, I recently had my hair in small two strand twist which I kept in for almost 1 month, I moistened my hair every other day, I must say I honestly saw a huge difference in my hair when I took the twist down I knew I had alot of growth was not really sure why until now, I have my hair in yarn braids right now should I wet these alot as well, what do you think? don't want then to old too fast, plan on keeping them in for a while lol
@lovingutube1 yarn braid, im not sure id they will unravall when wet craeting tangles with the hair, test one strand for a while be4 doing your whole head
I witnessed the same thing with one of my friends some 15+ years ago. But as soon as she started to allow her hair to dry out, it started to break off and thin out. A few years ago, I started to again wear my hair natural. During my transitioning phase I kept my hair moist. I used the Fantasia IC Pure Tea Silky Gel Moisturizer Activator twice daily. It appeared to be growing extremely fast; it actually just not breaking. I attributed it to the high concentration of glycerin in the product.
I remember those days because I wanted a Jheri curl so bad! (Michael Jackson)
My Mother had one and her hair would grow and remain soft when she used the activator. She would also use it in our natural hair and it made combing so much easier.
So folks on YT are still using Stay So Fro on natural hair.
Don't miss the messy pillow and the smell of the salon when they did my Mother's hair.
@2damnfunny lol, i under completely, but moisturizing our hair is keyy to retaining out length , so do the baggy method at night...idk, we'll figure something out right?
you are right keeping the hair moisturized is better for our hair, however for me, when I wear my two strand twist I can't moisturize because my hair frizzes. In fact my hair will frizz by day two with the two strand without adding any moisture but with moisture I look like a fuzz ball immediately. (yes I do sleep in a satin scarf - still frizz :( I only keep my twist in for a week though b4 washing and cond.) hmmm
You are so right! Great video! As you know I BC on may 18th I make sure I moisturize by cowashing every 2days and washing my hair with shampoo once every two weeks I'm big on cowashing! I always carry a spray bottle with water, leave in conditioner and glycerin
Great video. I had that same experience. I'd always had short hair (NL to SL) but right before I left home for freshmen yr, college My mom gave me my first perm since there would be no one at school to take care of my hair. It was a Jerri-curl. My hair got very long that first year! I figured out that it was all the moisturizing. It was very humid there so that helped a lot too. When the new growth took over, I just roller set every night & kept up the regimen. I never forgot that lesson.
tht happened to me, I used to have really long natural hair like almost to my bum, then I relaxed it and it went shoulder length and no i'm natural again and its as long as it was relaxed in 9 months
A lot of those who wore the Jeri Curl had experience retaining the length. And yes, you are correct, the Jeri Curl required daily moisturization. In addition, no heat! Yes! I keep my hair moisurized everyday! I wash with shampoo and deep condition once a week and condition wash at least twice a week. Thank you for reminding me of how important it is to keep our beautiful curls moisurized :)
my mom's hair was the longest it was with a jeri curl/ natural. With the jeri curl she was past apl and with being natural about bsb length ( right before bsl). So it less manipulation and the frequent moisture helped her hair retain length. I just wanted to wanted to go natural because I saw her hair grow(my was sl and never grew and relaxed). Now I LEARNED IT WAS HER METHODS!!
I agree with you. I had always had hair around shoulder length, natural until I was 18. Then I got the curl. My hair did grow fast and a little longer. The only thing is that the ends would get a little straight so that necessitated frequent trims. Today, a good portion of my natural hair reaches to my armpits, longer than it's ever been. That's because I moisturize more and keep the ends sealed. Good video.
My sister and I had this exact conversation awhile back about jheri curls and remember as well you had to sleep with the plastic cap on your hair every night which again is moisture,( what we naturals call baggying:) and than the next morning take off the cap and spary curl activator, basically is the same principles naturals have but when you had a jheri curl you stuck with this regimen no changing up and it worked and you had long hair! Really we need to do this regimen to our hair:) Thanks!
I must agree even though my hair is texlaxed I moisturize my hair everyday and seal my ends and my hair is growing like crazy. I noticed that when I didn't moisturize my hair will break off when it gets to a certain length. If it wasn't for me wanting straight edges I would go natural too but I just can't deal with kinky edges.
I think it's several different factors. My mom's hair was always about 3 inches long my entire childhood, and it didn't grow much longer than that. She was relaxed and curled it EVERY morning before work. When she decided to start wearing phony ponies (still relaxed), her hair grew to BSL in a matter of a couple of years. It was the protective styling and letting go of heat that did it for her. She and I both had figured her hair just didn't grow until it proved us wrong.
@drdiva2u yeah my hair too gre longwhen i stopped with the heay and rod set my hair allthe time, my hair was relaxed buyt not bone straight just textured..i really cant remember my moisturizing regime back then tho, but i deep conditioned weekly, , but for naturally curly hair we need to keep the hair moistuized more and keep it dry
I believe there is truth to your observation, as well. My natural hair, when it gets too dry, it becomes tangled and breaks easier. I only manipulate my hair when it has some moisture level in it, now. I think a carry on spray bottle will help. Thanks! :-)
WOW! VERY INFORMATIVE. IM NOT FAMILIAR WTH JERI CURLS BUT THE MOISTURIZING FACTOR DOES MAKE SINCE. BY THE WAY, UR HAIR LOOKS GREAT AND HEALTHY. TAKE CARE
@87Jjj same way, not cream based, cause that would cause dust particale to stick to the hair cause dust oil dirt build up, do braid on clean hair no oils or heavy product, and spray down with braid spay infusium, things like that
I have been natural for 3 years now however I just started doing Wash and Go''s in April which means I add moisture to my hair daily and I was it every 3 days. My hair has grown quite a bite since April so you are right it is the moisture.
@1cutefox yeah just monitor the gel, and how ur hair is reacting, use a oil shenn over the gel to soften the hair, hard crunch cant be good tfor the hair
@chariam0r I said the same thing , UHC you do look a tad bit different, I had to do a double take when I saw it in the new video line-up. But UHC you had me cracking up talking about the jerricurl and the spots she would make on the couch. PRICELESS
Because Jerri-curl has a moisturizer that keeps it soft. I put the leasure curl and my hair grew like crazy and when I went to Jamacia was when it really took off. lol. I will never forget how fast my hair grew. That's why I use the veg/glycerin mix. It does basicallyt he same thing for me
