Bad special effects have become sentient and walk freely! Imagine if this were real and he was still around, looking all 80's in 2011, retired and slowly loosing his glow.
This is why I love Youtube. I can re-live being a kid again when TV was brilliant, we had classics such as this and you didn't have to ring in to select the crap you wanted to see next week, which was guaranteed the Xmas no1 before even being selected.
Reality TV sucks and is easy TV hence it sells well. In the 80's it would never have got air time with all the great shows that were on.

@healgime1980 y ademas condor, animal, telematch, profesion peligro, thundercats, jose miel, el tesoro del saber.... nostalgia nostalgia. que buena epoca la de los 80s en Colombia amigo o amiga...
All Uk viewers.Do keep check on the channel Bravo. As I watched Automan around 3 years ago. They might re show it some time. If only the folk who chose what to put on tv actually came on this site. They would see that viewers long for a return of the 80s type of programs, with great writers, themes, action, and great actors who made the shows really special. Let us hope that all the USA programs do get shown on free digital channels in the UK. then every one can enjoy them.
This show looked fake even when it aired. I'm a die hard 80's fan and I've used to watch these shows in early 90's, during my childhood but to be honest, this show lack badass-ness and it never appealed to me.
@rformidable Is that in the US? I've never seen it in the UK. We have Bravo channel which used to show a lot of 80's stuff like Airwolf, A-Team & Knightrider etc, but never Automan!!!
@Apophisguard Hey dood. Automan did show in the UK. I believe around the early 80s. So if you are not in your 30s, then prob wouldnt of seen it. It was on roughly the same time as manimal.(the bloke who could turn in to animals. Later on he was in the BBC program Casualty as Dr Harper. Sadly died around a year ago) Both programs were on ITV. I think they got the chop from the net works as more newer stuff was fast approaching from the great USA writers. Like The Fall Guy, Knight rider. etc.
@Rob1992SJA I know bud, I didn't say I hadn't seen it. I did see it when it was first aired and loved it. What I was saying was that we need a purely 80's channel to show these things again. I remember Manimal with Simon McCorkindale also and The Fall Guy - all great stuff.
I remember way way back during the summer when the tv stations would create major build up to the new fall line up shows, and this was one of the shows i couldnt wait to see lol. many of the shows are on the list.
The show is among the 10 or 15 worst shows ever, joining the likes of "Pink Lady & Jeff." It was a rip-off of "Tron."
I can understand Desi Arnaz, Jr. being in something this stupid and maybe I can see Robert Lansing ("Four-D Man") in it, but how did Gerald S. O'Loughlin ("The Rookies") take this role?
Now that i look at it this was clearly a Tron / Buddy Cop rip off but i guess i was too young to realize it at the time. There was no way this show could last the special effects were way too expensive for TV.
Tron wanna be ass show! But, I liked this show, so I can't talk too badly about it. In the mid eighties, there were a lot of shows that were a lame cop off of some movie. Guess that TV was trying to grab hold of some of the success that those movies had. Unfortunately for the studio that produced them, those shows had a short shelf life, lasting a little more then 1 or 2 seasons (and some folded in the first season). Oh well for them, and this was a nice little trip down memory lane:)
Totally agree with scruff....nasty, brutal, aggresive reality TV shows have completely killed off ENTERTAINMENT. Thats why i hate 90percent of current remakes. They make everything so damn dark and brooding and POINTLESS. Whatever happened to the humor and wit and fun aspect of the originals? Maybe its also because tatooed, musclebound goons with man breasts and massive butts masquerading as actors have replaced class and talent.
@jeevanirajiv Gotta agree with ya. I'm re-watching the old A-Team series and it's great. This was when good guys were good guys, bad guys were bad guys, men were men and women were nervous! None of the 'realistic' got-emo-baggage from bad childhood, gotta-sleep-with-my-partner, violence-in-the-home, team-member-betrays-the-team crap we see these days. It's depressing and boring! Give me good old fashioned heroes like the A-Team any day! And to think the A-Team is mild compared to the shows now!

Despite all the special effects, take note of the really embarrassingly horrible fade at 0:53 as he transforms to Automan. Apparently he also moves about 3/4 of a foot, time of day, film exposure and cloud coverage transforms when he transforms into Automan. This is probably where some recording of film exposure and decent blocking could have resolved that situation.
Y'know, Glen A Larson really should do I deal ala Stephen J Cannell to get some of these short-lived shows out on DVD. I have Cannell's Prime Time Crime set, which compiles four of his short-lived shows in full with sample eps of his better-known programs. Surely Manimal and Automan (which I haven't full episodes of since I was like five years old) are well and truly overdue for DVD treatment, and a multi-series set would be a great way to do it.
TV exec 2: "Hey, let's rip that off and turn it into a TV show!"
TV exec 1: "Wut, no way man, that would cost us a fortune to make an all-electronic digital world every week."
TV exec 2: "You're right. Hey, I got it! Let's do a buddy cop show, like you know, Simon and Simon or Hardcastle and McCormack. Our Tron rip-off character can be one of them! Plus, we can make up shit like Tron cars and Tron helicopters."
Check the production credits. Donand Kushner and Peter Locke, the operating producers of "Tron," were also producers of Automan. It is not "ripping it off" if the same people made both.
@wikkedsensation - Hey that show Knight Rider is so popular, what can we do to copy it? Oooh, I know, let's change the car to a motorcycle, oh and we'll get Tangerine Dream to do the theme song!

@qmanbooks maybe because of all the helicopters, airplanes, and high fuel gas guzzlers they used on each show. probably got so expensive that the network people decided it wasn't worth it to refuel all the vehicles used in the show
@EEWW2006 You know what you're right and I take my words back because I do remember as a kid I was just waiting for another Tron movie or a TV series and this was the closest thing besides having the Tron games on the Intellivision. :P I loved this show. Of course my father thought it was corny but watched it with me anyways. I know he enjoyed it.
oh man are you fucking serious, this starred DESI ARNAZ JR ? i used to love this show as a kid and my dad hated it... but i never in a million years could have guessed DESI ARNAZ JR was in it.. fuckin brutal.
Thank heavens for the 80's! Nowadays that little spark critter would've gotten slapped with a sexual harassment suit for what he did to that lady near the end.
Looked alot like Tron. Today's shows blow. Reality manure and stuff like Lost which is just impossible to follow. Like Saturday morning cartoons and animation in general, good shows are ancient history!

How did this only go one season?
qmanbooks 1 year ago
@qmanbooks maybe because of all the helicopters, airplanes, and high fuel gas guzzlers they used on each show. probably got so expensive that the network people decided it wasn't worth it to refuel all the vehicles used in the show

@EEWW2006 You know what you're right and I take my words back because I do remember as a kid I was just waiting for another Tron movie or a TV series and this was the closest thing besides having the Tron games on the Intellivision. :P I loved this show. Of course my father thought it was corny but watched it with me anyways. I know he enjoyed it.

@74brooklynboi Well with Tron:Legacy just around the corner you will not have long to wait!
