I too am a born and raised Floridian. We grew up with lighting strikes on our property or close by and the 5PM storms are typical of Florida. Walt Disney Worlds GOLDEN RULE...Always pack a Pancho.
My family and I have been going to Disney since 2001 to see my grandparents who are seasonal workers there and we're like the locals, we know it's no big deal.
All of us who live in Florida are used to this kind of weather. We shrug it off and like to see the reactions of people from the northern latitudes "enjoy" the heat, humidity, and storms.
I was in a similar storm like that, but guess what! With all the thunder and lightning it was the perfect chance to go on the haunted mansion :) lol It was my first day also :[ We couldn't find our freakin hotel room and got lost -___-
It was like that when I was at Disneyland Paris when a huge Thunderstorm from North Africa started to drift towards Paris and the UK by the next day. OMG that storm was pretty bad.
@vinsilfon I disagree, most of Florida's storms come on strong but, they tamper off and it really takes away the harshness of the humidity for awhile and heat and just feels lovely. Being someone who has been to WDW 13x I def know what to expect from Orlando. Only once has the rain ever closed the park when I was there but, i still had plenty of days of fun filled memories.
I am going back to florida in summer I actually am looking forward to the usual 3pm thunder storms and then dancing about in the rain bare foot it is hillarious and a good laugh.
y would u walk in tht... when i was 3 i went hereand i was on the lazy river by myself and a thunder stornm started and we huddled under a little tiny tent
Disney storms in the afternoon are hands down the best. i was in Disney world august of last year and the only bad experience i ever had with a storm was on the line for the Wizarding world of harry potter in Universal i was waiting on the 90 minute wait and it started pooring and i was soked
Florida has the coolest stroms! where I live in Portland Oregon it just rains for days and days and days straight and it get so boring after a while. We hardly EVER have badass storms like this!
Wow, rain in Florida. Imagine that. Guests have actually asked at the parking lot toll booths..."It's raining today, is it raining inside the park?" Idiots!
you kidding me? ruin a day of fun? lol im from nothern canada and we dont get them like this but it would have been so exciting :)))) especially if you were in the haunted mansion at the time or Tower of Terror :) ....i wouldnt go on that ride even if it was a beautiful day
omg i was there is was like rushing and we were in mgm and we are like what... so we go to rockin rollercoaster and i am 8 and im like omg so i hide under my moms thing and then its pured even harder and then i think a flood came
why was the monorail running? I remember being on one of the monorails during a storm like that and they stopped it. We were stuck on the track for about an hour
oh lol that happened to me. We were sitting in Hollywood Studios and it started off real slow, so we decided to leave, and I was like "Let's hurry before it picks up. come on run!" and my parents were like "No, it's fine it won't pick up" then, by the time we got to the gate it was pouring and we had to wait till it slowed down for like 30 minutes and ran, but when we ran it picked up again so we had to wait underneath the next part, until we finally made it to the bus.
Normally, between Disney World and Tampa FL have the most number of Tstorms annually in all of the USA..being over 100 Tstorm-days strong....although Kampala, Uganda, Africa...has some 250 such days...and Bogor, Java, Indoensia can boast some 320 Tstorm days per year. Meanwhile...NICE Tstorm you GOT...great huge thunderclaps....and how I wish I can get you and all of your own companions SEE my own YouTube Tstorm videos... I got a huge one from 7/28/89....for instnac.e.lotsa claps and CG golts.
Typical Florida weather lol It makes me laugh a little when people not from Florida get scared from storms like that. That's not even that bad for us...
I feel the same way when people from the south come up here to Michigan in the winter and freak out when we get like 2 inches of snow! But if you are not from the area....weather can be scary.
Don't worry, I' sure it won't rain. We went in December. I can't guarantee, you'll have 100% perfect weather. Our third day there, a cold front came down, and my hands were freezing. Still had fun though.
something like this happened the last time i was there there was a storm about this bad and there were probably over 10,000 lightning strikes reported all over the state of florida stil was cool none the less
we just returned from florida and on the 18th we were walking back from downtown disney (coz we were staying at saratoga springs) and we got to the start of the golf course and we saw all the golfers drive in the little buggys really fast, the all of a sudden the was a massive flash and stragit after it there was a huge bang which scared me and my family :L and the we saw where the lightning hit. it hit a tree about 600 yards away.
i'd of been like "YEAH SCREW U I WANT MY RIDE!!!" haha jk. but yeah thts big! im sure its not as big as it looks on here, but its still big!! "1:09" ;D
The first time I went to Walt Disney World was in 1981 and a big storm from a passing Hurricane hit the Magic Kingdom My Family and I were at Cosmic Ray's waiting for the storm to pass A Huge Lighting bolt hit the top of Space Mountain. It scared the crap out of me the thunder was Loud
ive been i disney many times during hurricanes, charlie in 2004, and last year during tropical storm fay. Fay lasted like 6 days out of our trip, (bad luck huh!!) but ones like charlie blow over through the night, thank goodness!! but sometimes u just gotta make the best of it, and even though hurricanes stink, disney is the best no matter what:D
Was at DisneyWorld August 13, 2008(barely a month later, heh), and my fiance' and I could see the storm clouds gathering during the evening fireworks...; literally less than a minute after we cleared the park gates and were on our way to the monorail, someone upstairs turned on the waterworks...never seen rain pounce so suddenly like that! :D
i love it when there is a thunderstorm in florida its funn i love how you can get completle soaked by it an then in about an hour when the sun comes out ur bone dry again
It's not a trip to Disney World unless you get caught in one of these storms, iv'e been 8 times and every time we have been caught in that and its makes it so much more fun, especialy when you come back to your disney resort soaking wet :P its the best
We share the same thoughts. I love to run through the rain to get to shelter, then get to the resort and just stare at the rain. when i went to the contemporary, we had a great view of the magic kingdom and we saw like 50 people ranting and tripping over each other, and then the covered areas were swarming with people. lol. Good times :3
It's sounds crazy but it's so true! Once in a while I look back at coming back into my room soaked and peeling off my clothes and it was the best day of the best vacation ever!
True things said here...You can set your watch to the storms in the summer...usually afternoon, come in and go out in the hour. The parks never close though. I hav erun through the rain and enjoyed the parks several times. The storm add to the atmosphere too! It rains..go on Pirates!
It was around 4pm I think, I was lucky as it just started getting nasty on the ferry back to the car park. It had been hot sunshine just 1/2 hour before.
I was leaving anyway, so wasn't too fussed! It carried on raining hard for about an hour.
i live in orlando the parks never close for rain storms like this. even the water parks stay open (i've been at disney water parks in worse storms than this). they don't even close for tropical storms which are a step down from a hurricane. but during summer we have rain storms like in this video every other day
My wife and I traveled to Disney in August 2004, the day before hurricane Charley. that Friday they opened the parks from 9 am until 1:30 pm to resort guests only, and no one was charged for the day! it was only the 2nd time Disney ever closed their parks early (so I heard). Charley hit abour 5 hours after the parks closed around 7pm, the parks were clean and ready for guests by 9 the next morning. It is impressive how Disney operates....they even gave everyone free boxed dinners at the resort!
Fair enough! I had been in Florida for the previous 12 days and that was the only rain during that time. It was actually quite nice having some rain to cool down!

Two Words: THUNDERSTORM SEASON in Florida which occurs from late may until late September caused by three things:
1. Heat and the Humidity of the day
2. Seabreeze off the Atlantic Ocean
3. Gulf Breeze off the Gulf of Mexico
All three ingredients get together it causes Mother Natures Light Show everyday in Florida during the summer months.
