there is no difference, they can either push, pull or assist, but there are many different classes.

lol, what? who told you that? i certainly hope it wasn't anyone who works in the tug industry, the way a tug works (or any motor driven vessel) is that it uses method of cooling the engines or generators called overboard which circulates water from a high or low suction called the sea chest, that's why when looking at a boat you see water coming out of the side of a vessel that's just the outlet of the circulated water.
