@Nick992 You have no taste, no heart, no brain, no life. Go and listen to bullet for my valntine or whatever so called "music" it is you listen to. Oh, and this song ain't punk... too bad...
Why can't Pearl jam release all their early tracks like this in a box set or something?. Lost dogs only had a handful of vintage PJ songs. I'm sure that I'm not the only person who loves classic Pearl Jam (90-95) but does not care much for the majority of their output since. I guess they will continue to drip feed the rare or unreleased early stuff to string us all along. This is a good cover though, and is a live staple for PJ to this day.
The holiday singles have only ever been sent to Ten Club members, and are one of the incentives to join. PJ are therefore unlikely to release them all in a box set anytime soon as it seems like a betrayal to all those fans who paid their membership fees all those years. Needless to say of course that I wasn't a member in 1992! I got the singles from an older fan who was kind enough to burn them off for me :)
@TheGargantuanSock What you say is true, but if Pearl Jam released Sonic Reducer, Angel, and other rare tracks on cd, the vinyl singles would still be rare and therefore highly collectable to fans. I guess what I am trying to say is I want all the early Pearl Jam songs in high quality audio in the one conveniant package! Instead it seems we get more live slabs and Ukelele albums. To each their own but Ukelele music is just not Rock'n'Roll to me.
In fairness the Ukelele album was a solo record, though definitely not rock 'n' roll! Perhaps these songs will come out on remastered albums as bonus tracks? There were some great rarities on the Ten reissue for example.
@TheGargantuanSock I have the Ten reissue and I think it's great (especially Brother and the unplugged dvd). I've not yet accquired the Vs and Vitalogy reissues but I will soon. I doubt there will be any more reissues forthcoming from PJ, as I doubt many people are waiting for a No Code or Yield remaster, but you never know. I'm guessing you like Ukelele songs, I find it a bit flat but Into the Wild was not bad. I mainly enjoy the 90's PJ. Yellow Ledbetter, State of Love and Trust, Crazy Mary etc
Ukelele Songs was a real suprise for me - didn't expect to like it at all... I guess I should've known we wouldn't get anything too gimmicky or Formbyish from the likes of Ed Ved. Of the earlier albums Vs has always been the one that stands out to me as their masterpiece, not Ten, and I'd rank No Code and Binaural up there with it at least. That said I wouldn't get any reissues - these days I mostly look for interesting live material in their extensive bootleg collection.
@TheGargantuanSock I would have to agree with you that Vs is the defining PJ album, as it so diverse, well put together and still had that anthemic quality that Ten had. I've already said I prefer the first 3 Lps but must admit I have a soft spot for No Code, I listened to it a lot when it first came out, Off He Goes is definitely one of PJ's best ballads. Do you have the live Cardiff(6.6.00) official bootleg? It must be one of the few shows where they played Leatherman.
@TheGargantuanSock Hate the reissues that they rerecord both Dave's drums out for Cameron.. Nothing wrong with Matt just my favorite (as a drummer myself) was Dave Abbruzzese.. Loved his version of Sonic Reducer
@skoi87 I know, but sadly that hasnt been realized by the punks... Just as real punk means not caring about how you look, most punks dress in leather, peircings and colored spike hair.
And your right its not about violence, but it is a little bit about stupidity, or atleast naiveness. read the lyrics to Dead Boys Aint nothing to do...
i love pearl jams live version of it. actually wasnt aware it was released on holiday single. damn, i joined 10c one year later - the postcard took so long back in the days :)
@ohio1968javelin Pearl Jams opinions and feelings are deeper and more intelligent than "Hey, im pissed at the world, lets burn someones car and destroy a phone booth!!!"
@Ekyvvsaq ,,Yea good point,,But when you play punk either you feel pist off and angry or you end up sounding like this?Watered down version of a very powerful song.Punk rock is not intelligence, its expression and angst.Discover and research the roots of punk, its a good lesson.Pearl Jam are just not angry enough to play punk, and especially this tune.
@ohio1968javelin The roots of punk was good. Back then "punk" meant simple. Do you not think The Clash and Ramones are punkrock. and its a pretty aggressive version, although its not "heavy" but I dont think punk should be heavy. If you have heard Spin the black circle, Blood or Life Wasted you might get me...?
The Dead Boys actually took Sonic Reducer from their previous band Rocket from the tombs. David Thomas from 'Pere Ubu' co-wrote it with Gene O'Connor.
Your have your opinions and I have mine. I just think theres some music that should not be done by othere, take Pink Floyd for example, Korn should of never touched that one...theres just some things out there that should be left untouched!
@TheGargantuanSock how are you defining "talent"? the ability to play a guitar solo. thats not what matters here. (not that Cheetah is a bad guitarist) As far as im concerned Any Dead Boys song is better than Any pearl jam song. i even bet pearl jam would tell you the same. there's no talent in that?? do you actively listen to the dead boys? i bet not.
I don't 'actively' listen to them no, but I've been exposed to punk music pretty much all my life and do very much like some of the more 'arty' punk acts, like Television and The Only Ones. How would one describe musical talent? Well of fundamental importance are musicianship and songwriting. For both attributes the Dead Boys (and most other punk bands) are leagues behind the likes of Pearl Jam. What defined them and their scene was sheer impact and shock factor, not musical talent.
'brah'? Oh dear, there goes any chance of an intelligent debate.
Isn't it hilarious that the majority of people on here will merely dismiss or hurl abuse at anyone who says something they disagree with? No, no it's just mildly irritating... nevermind.
What a rediculous comment, I suppose you didn't read the comment I replied to.
If I was hating on the Dead Boys I wouldnt have even acknowledged their influence. Obviously you're too narrow minded to discuss this properly, otherwise you would've come up with something cohesive by now. What are you? Some sort of fan boy who can't accept criticism of his favourite bands? Pathetic.
@tarabridegroom Pearl Jam don't need to cover anybody to become a great band. They cover so many different artists as a mark of respect. Punk had a massive influence on pearl jam's music and they cover the music they love, respect and that has influenced them, it isn't competitional, it isn't like they're releasing it to make money or gain sales they just love the song, like you do!
well when i first got into pearl jam in 91, i became a member of their fan club...well needless to say, they sent me a 78' of alive and on the back was sonic reducer...goodness i wish i still had it...it was super cool that they sent that out...so as my kid calls it old music then i guess im old and will hold on to that music alwasy
