Actually, some kind YouTuber put up a clip with a snippet of a demo of Carly singing a ballad at age 13 and she sounds very much like Idol Carly. Just do a Youtube search for "Hennessy Bridge" and the singing starts about 1:20 into the clip. It is very interesting what Carly did was tailor her voice on Ultimate High, and this single, for a more pop sound.
I like her then and now, although I agree that her voice did mature and develop a better sound. still, her young voice was better than half the contestants on idol anyway...
Her voice sounds much better now than back then... Much deeper, richer, and more mature. This song is really dated, too. It's too late 90's sounding, which is probably part of why it didn't make much of an impression in 2002.

Carly didn't rip it off, Danielle was the producer hired by MCA for about half the album, sang backup vocals and is still a close friend of Carly's. She was in the audience for Top 12 night when Carly did Come Together on Idol. So definitely no "rip off" going on here.
Carly is essentially singing covers of Danielle Brisbois demos on half her album and the tone of her voice is processed to raise the pitch of her voice as well. Most of the rest is Gregg Alexander's New Radical sound. You can hear Danielle's version of Rip In Heaven on her My Space and it sounds eerily similar to Carly's Ultimate High rendition. She was sixteen years old and making her album with experienced people and if you don't like it that's fine, there is some good music on the disc.
As much as I love Carly Smithson, I dislike Carly Hennessy.
She's not the sexy kind of beautiful (Actually she's one of the few women I've seen that look better when they're a bit fatter). She's not the pop-star kind of singer. This song killed all the power and sweetness that are characteristic of her voice and made her sound like your typical average singer.
If she had presented herself as she did in AI since the beggining, she wouldn't have need AI.
Who ever likes Carly and would like to suppor her, her Ultimate High album charted at #82 on ITunes TOP POP 100! It'll be great if we support her and buy the album.

I got a physical copy of Ultimate High from Amazon but thank for the tip. Carly is awesome, loved her pop stuff and her covers on Idol. The show is about talent and Carly has it in a major way.

STOP HATING!!!! This young woman's failures as an artist RA fault of mgmt & promotion, not talent. She has an eccentric style & amazingf range. She has a LOT of talent and I happen to think this song is very upbeat, fun, & beautiful! Don't hate her for pursuing her dreams. People don't hate her for having had a record deal. It's her attitude and approach on things that pisses people off. It's her personality. Many people think she is a great singer, but she lacks personality, warmth, friendliness that is needed to become an AI.
She has trouble connecting to the audience because she sings to herself, not to the people.
She has a great voice - quite talented.

I hope Carly gets the chance to crank out some power-records. Her voice is amazing, and I love the strength of her chest voice. It's so refreshing to hear talent like that and I would love to continue to listen to her.
David Cook is just the same - a powerful voice that's music to my ears. Since my favorite, Carly, is now gone (T__T) I'm 100% behind David for the win!!~

Poor Carly! Well, look at the bright side. Not all winners do better than losers on AI. For ex., Fantasia got to broadway but Jennifer Hudson got an Oscar! Ruben Studdard won a recording contract but Clay Aiken sold more records! Carly has 2 markets, the U.S. and Ireland. Good luck to you, girl!

I think the audio to this song has been heavily altered, because listening to her sing this song live back then, her voice was much like what we expect of her now.

You are right the show is boring...I stopped watching after Johns was voted off. However after reading around on the net I see that he is doing excellent...we just may have a legend coming out of this with him! They should have a better voting system for the show. Maybe a one vote per phone number...or at least limit it to a few in the event that a household has many people in it. Well good luck to you in school and life in general. Sorry but this song just isn't good. I think she is just missing 'it' and that even though she can sing, America just isn't buying what she's selling. After well over $2 million her album sold about 380 copies. Also look up Brooke White 'Free' - she had a music video too! STOP HATING!!!! This young woman's failures as an artist RA fault of mgmt & promotion, not talent. She has an eccentric style & amazingf range. She has a LOT of talent and I happen to think this song is very upbeat, fun, & beautiful! Don't hate her for pursuing her dreams. People don't hate her for having had a record deal. It's her attitude and approach on things that pisses people off. It's her personality. Many people think she is a great singer, but she lacks personality, warmth, friendliness that is needed to become an AI.
She has trouble connecting to the audience because she sings to herself, not to the people.
