  • It's funny to watch these hulufication videos so long after the fact. Not that I don't think there's been changes (I do think so) but it's funny how the drastic changes never came about.

That's actually a very good analysis of what happened with viewership. And I think when it comes to the "old school" vloggers, it's a difference between vlogging for the sake of vlogging and vlogging as a creative outlet.

The bigger it grows, the harder it is to find fresh faces ... agreed.

  • Thinking about this months later, it really seemed much ado about nothing!

  • Since a year ago, I stopped watching television, I only watch it for the news, as for entertainment I only watch youtube now...

  • Each year I watch less and less TV. This year I stopped watching 24 and kind of stopped caring about American Idol! I do still watch Lost and The Office though.

  • Me too, this year I stoped caring for american Idol, and I only watch TV because of Reno 911 too.

  • I haven't seen that show in years!

  • I'm still making as many videos as I used to... The ideas keep on coming and the cameras keep on rolling...

  • I think we all need to keep truckin'! :)

  • Knew I could count on you to put it all into perspective, Gary. All your observations make sense to me.

  • Thanks Darl! It seems like the changes have been put in place and they're barely noticeable! People were getting all worked up over nothing!

  • I really dont get the drama of it all....seriously, the only thing that will change is regular vbloggers wont get as popular or as fast as they once did....but who the hell cares? I dont care about popularity and that is not why any joe-blow vblogger should want. Its about community, friendship, provoking convos, etc., Youtube is only opening doors for more entertainment options so for me its a win win situation. ~Raven

  • It seems to me that people got all worked up over nothing, as usual! If they'd just stop and think for a minute as to the positive outcome of all of this. If there are more reasons to come to the site, then more people will find the community. :)

  • and yes, I need to make more videos! I'm a slacker right now. ugh. SMileyD

  • We ALL need to make more videos! :)

  • (7:16) Amen G! I never was looking, but I just kinda found you guys and it's been a wonderful life changing experience. I love you guys! SMileyD

  • Aren't the connections we've made incredible?

  • Hmmm... I usually just check my susbscriptions and click on related videos sometimes, so I don't think it will affect my youtube experience.

  • That's exactly how I feel. Unless they get rid of our subscription pages, then nothing will change for me. Too many ppl always get all worked up for this stuff over nothing!

  • i like youtube because of making personal connections. i also like it because i can watch short videos. youtube can change all it wants but i think new users may go after the 'new tube' but...i'll be still keeping up with the community best i can!

  • I think a lot of ppl will eventually find the community, even if that's not what they're looking for. :)

  • Well, I gotta say, if these changes were really the end of the world, I'm under-whelmed. As long as I've got my subscriptions page, there's no difference to me. Yes, new people may have a little more difficulty getting "into the community" - but not much. I'm sure they won't pull our channel pages - they ain't evicting us yet.

  • All this talk about changes, and I've seen nothing. According to my google ad sense page, there was supposed to be an upgrade to the site last night...and nothing happened. Once again, a lot of buzz about nothing. I'm glad I didn't get worked up over it! :)

  • Sorry but couldn't help but allow myself a small laugh when you lost your train of thought! ;)

Good vlog Garry, I've no idea how people currently discover my channel and don't really expect much difference in terms of views/subscribers following the change.

My main regret is the fact that a lot of this new content of shows and films is blocked in the UK and I don't really see how it could be said we are competing with this type of content.

  • That's how I feel. Either people come to these sites to watch user generated content, or studio created content. I don't think I'll have to worry about competing with Lost or The Office any time soon!

  • So far so good. I haven't noticed any seismic shift so far, but maybe it's different Stateside? I personally think that YT will open up the partnership program even further in order to generate more advertising revenue and if that keeps the boat afloat for all of us, fair enough.

  • If they opened up partnership to everybody, they could definitely have more advertising on the site and help pay for some of the admin costs. Good idea! The randomness of the partner program is ridiculously unfair anyway!

  • There are some really cool new people that seem to being a great job "fitting in." See my "pimp list" for who I mean. Plus, in 2006, a thousand views a vid was a LOT. Compared to the "big names" now it's nothing, but... well... I think you see where I'm goin'

I agree with you on the profit thing being better for us!

  • Shut up, Mast! Why don't you tell Gary his vids are redundant. Asshole!

  • :-P

  • Don't be such a hater, Vic

  • Mast loves it.

  • I agree. I'm amazed at how many amazingly talented people are showing up who fit right in! Look at JimmerSD at the gathering for example.

  • 3 minus points?! NO SENSE OF HUMOR!

  • Wow! That wasn't me!

  • I hadn't thought about YT pulling our channel pages.

So many of us branched out from YT onto other more "complex internet" relationships. I deliberately held off on Twitter and FB until now.

    Who doesn't know Hulu?

  • Hulu is quite new in internet terms, isn't it? I've been visiting it since about November.

  • "Mr. One Shot"? LOL. Dirty bastard! ;)

  • You didn't mind!

  • So far I like the new channel design, there are a few bugs but it sounds like those are already on their way to being fixed.

As for the whole 'community pushed aside into one small area' thing that's rumored to happen, I think I'm with you Gary. I don't see it making much difference. I sort of like that the 'community' is underground and not in the spotlight, more like a secret treasure.

  • As for view counts, that could be a bug... or maybe we never really got that many views in the first place and that vlogs appeared to get so many views was due to a bug in view counting. Either way, for me it's more about the comments than the number of views and I'd rather have people make less videos while making videos of quality instead of lots of low quality videos.

  • I think we've always been underground and will stay that way, and like you said, I'm perfectly fine with that.

I think maybe the original way we got views was buggy. I also remember that back then, if somebody replied to your comment, you had to go to the video to see the reply. Now it's in your email, kind of cutting those views in half!

  • I still say that ViddYou isn't getting the recognition it deserves but I still like YouTube.

  • Can you believe I am just finding out about this today?! I had no idea and it kind of saddened me looking at site. They keep pushing us (vloggers) deeper and deeper into the black hole of abyss. My biggest fear is that we will be pushed so far that no one will even know we exist...that just saddens me. Although, I will admit I felt better watching your vlog and I will try and stay positive about this change.

  • So it's a few days after this proposed change and barely anything has changed other than a few old tv series showing up on a "shows" tab. I wonder if that's all the changes?

  • Well, I guess we will have to see. Ytube is always changing so I kinda have in the back of my mind...that's not all that will change.

  • Yeah, I agree. The good news is that whatever proposed changed was supposed to happen at the end of last week either didn't happen, or it was so minor that we barely noticed and everybody else just made a huge deal about it again!

  • A few days ago I posted "The End Of YouTube" video about this...

Many of the video networks have targeted a specific demographic.... I am not in it... I think productivity is a function genre... If you vlog eventually you will say everything you think... Then?

I like the poetry art avenue because I don't think I can paint myself in a corner...

Now I'll never draw traffic looking at the past 2.5 years here... But it is the work that matters... the material...

    *shrug*

  • They're targeting a much younger demographic than most of us on here.

  • Well said!

  • Thanks friend!

  • I can't help but wonder that if this move is successful for YT, might we see sites like Hulu create user-generated content areas for their own sites? If you could watch an episode of LOST then post your own video about it here, why wouldn't other sites want to capitalize on that, as well...just a thought.

  • I agree. It's actually a very exciting idea...us working WITH the studios to create user created content, helping market their product by building a community! We can dream, can't we?

  • You never know. The changes might bring an even bigger audience. I think, however, that you're right. The user-created stuff will slowly become lower under the radar but I think it'll be a long while before it goes away.

I just wonder what will be spawned by YouTube. More sites that combine formats, is what I expect to see and one of these new sites will be the new, big "user driven" experiences.

    Cheers! Great vlog!

  • Thanks!! I think we are totally at the dawn of this type of user created content that ties into the web 2.0 social driven sites. It will be interesting to see how it all evolves.

  • For me it slowed down very fast. I don't really care about the numbers. You can still find people on here. The community is not gone. I do not really understand people freaking out. The people are not gone.

  • The community will always be here! :)

  • Yeah, I'm just not concerned about this at all. I have fun making videos, I've made and am making friends and there is no cost to me. What I have always hoped for has already happened now and that is "stereo" an "better picture quality". Being under a different button won't make a difference to me. As for the partners, yeah I guess this could make a difference but who knows at this point.

  • I agree with you 100%. The site offers us so much and slowly is getting better. I think some people just have nothing else to do but bitch about things.

  • Wow - 15 minutes? I'll have to come back and watch later. I gotta leave for work in 10 minutes. :-)

  • Yeah, I had a lot to say! :)

  • We seem to feel pretty much the same about this, as per usual.I don't see too much of a change for us 'little people either'. Good point about those with big sub numbers though.

Like you, my Internet experience has taken me away from YT. But, it's still the 1st site i go to after my home page (BBC News)

I use all those sites you mentioned. But, can't get into Facebook too much & have really slipped as far as Blip is concerned.

Funnily enough my online life is now taking a more local turn :)

  • I have a feeling our internet experiences are greatly in parallel to each other. I just got back from a weekend with Captainfury2007 and MasterGunner99 and it amazes me just how much I have in common with these cool internet friends.

  • Great video! Watched the WHOLE thing. I hate that you make long videos but not because you are not worth watching. I just wish you would reach more people. I think the length intimidates a lot of folks. Very much worth the time and you basically took the words RIGHT out of my mouth!

  • Thanks Victor! I appreciate you watching it all. I know a lot of my videos are long, and I know that doesn't draw a huge audience. I'm cool with that. I'd rather do the longer videos and do my thing vs. compromise to a wider audience that has a short attention span. I'm not really interested in having them follow me, frankly.

    I appreciate your comments friend!

  • I agree with pretty much everything you said. The idea that YouTube can continue to be a loss making vanity project for Google is just naïve. Even the companies with the biggest backing still need to justify their existence. We have to thank our lucky stars that they don't charge us. As you said, that's remarkable in itself.

As for the change, there will be the usual tech bunfight as they sort themselves out, but I think it will work out OK.

  • I think usually people just look for something to bitch about and always resist change regardless of the long term benefits it would have for us. Bottom line, YT needs to make money or else none of us can do THIS on this website anymore!

  • migration to Facebook type sites wil really contract "the community" there's no browsing on Facebook you maybe can connect with the people you already know but how would someone you don't already know find out something about Gary beyond your photo. just think if your YT acquaintances were limited to only the people who knew you before you got on to YT. Twitter's much better but is strongly dependent on embedded links. I have yet to meet my first Twitter only friend. aloha :)

  • I like the closed aspect of Facebook. I have my last name on there as well as lots of pictures of my family and private networking things. Something like YouTube doesn't need to be as closed of a network, IMHO.

  • things i value most in media distribution and social networking sites is the opportunity for ordinary people to create content, get the word out and interact with their community. i see all this as an online extension to the local coffee shop, community theatre, volunteer action group... and I hope any new changes don't compromise accessibility, content or interactivity. With one exception: creators of vids >15mins should be smothered in poison ivy and forced to live in places with long winters.

  • Hmmm....Smothered in poison ivy and forced to live in places with long winters. Who could you possibly be talking about? I warned you about my long vlogs! LOL

  • heheh I'm in my own little world - I haven't heard anyone talk about the changes in youtube.

  • It's better for us all to stay in our own little worlds! :)

  • I typed up like three pages of "response" to this video. For now I'll just say the black-and-white and general darkness of the room really reinforce the apocalyptic tone. Foreboding title, too!

Unfortunately the ominous nature is shattered when the birdy starts chirping in the background. :)

  • The birds just happened. The black and white as an afterthought as I had a great dark shadow on my face because of the late afternoon sun coming into my bay window. :)

  • I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal either. I think people will always find each other, and the connections that we have all made will stay intact if we choose. If I understand the change correctly, YT is just "moving" the community to it's own niche area...which just might make it easier to find each other, but time will tell how it works out. :-)

  • If history is any indication with any of this, the changes will be minimal and everybody will have gotten all worked up over nothing, as usual.

  • MIKMA WAS HERE

  • :-)

  • I plan to make a video someday again too. It has been more than 8 months for me

  • Hop to it!

  • I like Hulu as well, not too sure that Youtube should go that way though. People are watching less because they are subscribing to more. Impossible to keep up with hundreds of subscriptions. Unless you have a "niche" like Fred or Hotforwords etc... a mass audience will not be possible.

  • That's a good point. I sub to probably 5 times as many people as I did 2 years ago. It's impossible for me to watch everybody anymore.

  • So long as I can still vlog and watch vlogs, I dont care what they do to make money. Agreed about the hulu player, its way better than the network sites.

I prefer weeds to blades of grass, weeds are harder to get rid of:-)

  • I'm like one of those picker bushes that you can never kill unless you rip it out by the roots! LOL

  • Like BroJohn said, LiveJournal has price tiering. An anonymous dumb ass there bought me a $150 permanent account there that I am still pissed at. I hate unwanted wastes of money... but that's another vlog.

Like you said, with this new content I don't think they will have to start charging us. If that was the case they wouldn't be "paying" partners.

  • Brother John has another idea! "User Generated Product Placement!" Well it's not a new idea by far, but it is one that YouTube hasn't mentioned yet.

Or requiring a user-generated commercial (contest opportunities?) for every x amount of videos uploaded.

Doesn't sound like the funnest thing in the world, but it might be worth a shot for them

  • BrotherJohn is a wise man, despite the vicious rumors that Autumn has been spreading to my cat!

  • WTF! Is Ralfonzo in your house again?

  • I have him chained to the refrigerator!

  • Did they tell all the partners to prepare us for the "Big Change"? It seem everyone's doing these videos the night before...

I really think we should all just start 'Youtopia' and move there ;)

  • I haven't heard a thing from YouTube about this. As a matter of fact, I haven't heard a thing from YT in over a year (just the info when I became partner). I just think it's something a lot of us are talking about...

  • I'm glad you covered the idea of "Premium" or paid accounts, I was thinking about something like that for a few months now. Even livejournal has something like that.

I too have always wondered how they can afford to keep this sight running, with hundreds of millions of videos out there, many in high quality, a lot in HD.

I guess as long as my Subscriptions Box is still there when I wake up tomorrow, I'll be contented. :)

  • I don't even visit the homepage as a lot of people have said. I keep my sub page bookmarked and that's where I'll continue to go. :)

  • was i quoted?!?

    ***faint***

  • You are famous now! LOL

  • 3:55 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID

    ***shamem i couldn't help it***

  • :-)

  • I really like Flee's blade of grass analogy.

I echo a lot of your sentiments. Actually, I already did but it won't be uploaded until Saturday - did a guest vlog for the 5awesomeoptimists channel but MrHollick is holding it for the weekend.

Hopefully these positive messages will help balance out some of the pessimism going around about this.

Okay, back to me Knots Landing DVDs now!!

    8-D

  • MrHollick asked me to do a guest spot too. I'm looking forward to doing one!

  • Great vlog Gary. Change can be a good thing. Let's just hope for the best and treasure the friendships we have made. hugs, Chris

  • I agree!

    Happy Birthday Chris!

  • I've said this on another video about this but i can't remember whos is as long as i still have a place to hang my hat on here and let us do what we do i'm a happy camper. If they take that though i'll go.Great vlog i think we all will still be around tomorrow if not it was fun while it lasted.

  • Funny, it barely looks like ANY changes happened at all. So was all this fuss for nothing?

  • Yeah wasn't much I saw a bit on msnbc about YT the other day saying it's gonna cost them741 million this year and they are only gonna make 240 million so maybe they can sell some ad's and leave all us alone.

  • Ha ha! I agree!! The thing is, we need them to make money so they stick around!

  • yeah that's what i ment YT been pretty slow today atleast for me yours was the first reply in a few hours so my brain wasn't warmed up:D

  • LOL! Lately my brain is never warmed up! LOL

  • I'll echo what I posted to Zipster's video but if Vloggers and Viewers keep at it, they can add all the tv shows they want and it won't matter. Youtube vlogs are my tv.

  • I watch some TV online, but that's certainly not why I come to YouTube. I just wonder if we are the exception to this rule?

  • I'm concerned about what might happen, but we'll find out in time I suppose. I've been on here for nearly two years and have only 30 subscribers, and realized as of late that the main reason is that I don't interact enough with the community, as I should. I was thinking of leaving YouTube but instead decided to stop making videos for a while and just comment on videos and build a community of friendships.

  • Unless you have a video that goes viral, it's really important to take part in the community in order to grow a subscriber base.

  • Well said Gary. I'm optimistic about it too. I don't even use the main page and the community, channels, and other 'here's the popular peoples pages' I rarely touch. I have my main page as the /subscription_center page so things will likely not seem any different at all for me except the sentiment of other Youtubers towards the changes.

If it keeps Youtube up and running I'm all for it because in the end it's what we all need, even if commercialization has to get cozy to pay for it.

  • I have my sub paged bookmarked as well. Whenever I go to the main page, it feels like an entirely different site to me anyway.

  • Gary!

  • Victor!

  • Vitoria!!

  • VICTORY!

    (Entourage refrence, anyone?)

  • Ok smarty pants...

What's with the new channel thing? Is it s partners only thing again?

  • Nope, anyone can use the new channel design. Check out the latest Nerimon video for more info.

  • Got it! Thanks!!

  • Victor!!
