  • try locking the wheel that is away from the wall then push ageist the rail to get the near whell up then lock it and un lock the far wheel and pull the rail and get it up

  • @force311999 Your idea won't work, I don't think you have an understanding of the forces in play or how scissor-lock brakes work. If you can show how to do it your way, I would learn something new. For now, I can't see how it's possible. Hillclimbers might be an option, but I won't be mounthing them. Thanks for your idea.

  • cool.. erik has some great video's, very interesting handcycle too. I wish I had the hip mobility, and hand function, to do these things. Keep up the great work. Its all about getting out there and figuring out how to tackle these issues.

  • @tatt00d2 Funny should mention hand function. Last week I couldn't use my hands, mostly left hand, much. Had to use Dragon to write, oh I hate Dragon. Anyway, this week is better and I am typing by hand again. Don't know when I'll try climbing stairs again though. It's good to have all the skills you can so when you're stuck - you won't get stuck but that doesn't mean your body will always be cooperating. Gotta hang in there :-)

  • @tatt00d2 Thanks, that's how I feel too - figuring out how to tackle things. I practice so when I need it, I have options. Came in handy yesterday when I found only stairs into a store.

  • search erik kondo wheelchair stairs, and watch how he does it at the top

  • @tatt00d2 Erik Kondo's videos are how I first learned the technique. I've been watching them for over a year.

  • My comments are in the wrong order, as you have understood i hope.

  • One thing. Never never let go of the chair with our free hand (more than second whne changing grip. Holding the rail with two hands are extremely dangerous as you see in the end of the video.

I'm para th6 and have lived on second floor, and had stairs into my work for many years. But remember it costs on your shoulders ....

  • Pull the inner wheel up while rotating the chair towards the wall. Then you stand with two wheels on the top level and two on the last step in the stair. Then lift the front up and rotate again. The upper rearwheel goes down on the last step and the front wheels are now on top. Then its easy to pull yorself upp holding the rail.

  • @goatcreek I'd have to see that to understand, could you make a video? Btw thanks for the advice.

  • Looks good, especially the higher steps when you keep the front down. Then you get a better momentum and higher force backvards. On the last step you can do a rotation! You lean forward (not tom much:-)

  • last step a tough one. but no surprise, because there isn't any handrail to use. but good effort. normally i just get others to bump me up!

    good work

  • @ss770640 I'm working on the technique. I have since made it up other stairs. It's is kind of a last shove at the top to make it and it's going to be a bit wobbly. I don't want to go up stairs, it's bloody hard and sometimes I pull a muscle but having as many options as possible is important to me. If I keep practicing then when I face some situation when I am stuck, I've got a way out. This happens more than I'd like but things aren't as accessible as the could be.

  • right on, that's such a good skill to develop and from watching your video I'm not surprised you're cleaning this now. I'm a c7 quad so this is awfully hard for me (no trunk, weak hands) and I haven't even come close unassisted but like you say it opens up access so I will do my best

  • @paddleskipaddle At first I didn't know what I'd be using all the stuff I was learning. It really does pay off though. I couldn't get into my favorite restaurant if I couldn't climb the big step in. I use the door frame to come up just like the parking meter technique. Managing stairs if you can, is awesome. I don't like running into them but have an option is great. No SCI for me, don't know what that's like but without my chair I can't go anywhere so I can understand that.

  • Right off I could tell the hard part would be the final step. That handrail doesn't extend very far, bloody good effort though!

  • @paddleskipaddle Thanks. You're smarter than I am. I didn't even think about the end of the handrail when I started or that I could have used the same climbing technique to work my way back down instead of staying stuck at the top.

I have since made it to the top of some other stairs but haven't gotten it on video yet. I work so hard at all this that I know it will get easier. I wish it all wasn't necessary but access is something I usually find missing and it's find a way in or stay out.

  • Wrap hard tape around each tire at 1/4" high eyery 4", then you have enough traction to use tire to pull up, even the left tire. You need some kind of ribs on tires to climb stairs.

  • @Hesam0000 I don't understand your idea. I grab the pushrim not the tire and if I had tape every 4" 1/4" high, I couldn't use the chair once I got to the top. Since the video I have made it to the top of a staircase several times. It's been a matter of rhythm and finding staircases with handrails that extend far enough past the top stair.

  • Without bag on the back, you pass ;)

  • Wow!! I would love to know how to do this but...I am a short girl so I don't know! The thing I want to learn first is how to roll down a ramp on my back wheels. Any tips for me? Also, just curious what your level is and what happened? I am a T10 incomplete from a spinal infection. You can check out my videos if you would like. I try to provide videos for gals like me who don't have these muscular arms or long torsos that guys have!:)

  • @ruetoyou I've seen your videos, I am a subscriber :-) What I'm doing in this video is based on Erik Kondo's video and tips I've gotten from him. I'll send you a message with the link and more info.

  • Soooo close!! I'm worn out just watching you do that.

  • @blackpearlv6 Geez I was tired at the end. Been working so hard on the stairclimbing technqiue, this is the furthest I've gotten. One more step to go. Then do it over and over again until it's easy. Everything I've thought I couldn't do, I've done, after lots of hard work and lots of falling. I wish it was easier making and keeping places accessible than it was learning to climb in and out of them, but I'm not holding my breath on that one ;-)

  • Nice Silver. Looks good man. That last step looks tough for sure! I believe you've inspired me to give it a try:) Fall down 7 times, get up 8. Rock on.

  • @HowiRolldotcom It was Erik Kondo who inspired me. Been trying for a year what he does in his videos. Taking me a long time to learn but you are right about falling down and getting back up. Always get back up :-)

    I ain't never gonna quit.

  • The last step is particularly difficult because you run out of railing and the angle changes. You have to switch your grip from under the railing to over. Then you need to make a huge explosive movement to drive the wheel up the step. It is very difficult when the railing ends with minimal extension.

  • @NotMe1357 I thought about what you did in your videos and I tried reaching on top but the bloody railing was so short it still didn't seem enough. Thanks for the advice on the explosive move at the end, I can practice that. It's really not easy at the top which is ironic - you get up a staircase but can't get past the last step. I'll figure it out, I got this far, I'll get the rest. This time my mistakes moved me against the wall until I couldn't move anymore. I'll get it. Thanks Erik :-)

  • Not bad. 1st you should never put both hands on the railing. You will lose control of the chair. It works in the video because the step is wide and you have lower body control. Without that the chair would have rolled back down like in the end of the video.

  • Hey Milly! Aw it's fair. Falling down is all part of getting it right. This is the farthest I've gotten yet. For a year I couldn't get up one step even. Almost made it. I'll get it. Keep trying. Fall down, get back up and oh boy have I fallen!

  • auw man no fair you were right there! great job though wow!
