Oh hey! Have you thought about - fast abs magic (do a google search)? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my cooworker got really defined Six pack abs and lost crazy amounts of belly fat with it.
I think i would agree and disagree. Carbs actually make you fat, if you want to loss weight you look at your carb intake. Protein and fats dont make you fat if you went on a high protein and fat diet but low carbs you will have looked you like came from ethopia! Steve good job on the video :)
Alright there! Have you heard about - fast abs magic (should be on google have a look)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy got really defined Six pack abs and lost a ton of belly fat with it.
Holy crap, quite the argument going on down below.. Its hard to argue against the fact that when the dust settles, it doesn't matter what you eat, weight loss will occur as long as your in a caloric deficit.
Not all calories are created equal. Nutrient dense calories go to work in the body repairing and building muscle, feeding your trillions of cells, and providing sustainable energy. Empty calories are poison in the body that do nothing but ravage blood sugar levels and ultimately make you more hungry. It's not as simple as calories in vs calories out. Calories that nourish the body are used in ways other than just to be burned as energy. You can't compare an apple to a candy bar.
@sol1deogloria If it were that simple we would all be lean. By the way, your earlier comment about having protein with carbs is right on. So many people don't realize the impact insulin has on fat storage.
@sol1deogloria your a fucking dumbass. show me on google or any website ( a legit website ) that explains what mrodzen007 is saying. you won't find it dumbass
@SubZeroSkyLine sorry man I don't think there is any website what would explain this to you in a way you would understand.I usually learn from scientists/doctors of nutrition because being a nutrition science graduate myself, my resources more advanced and factual without chance of corruption. Telling you to search the web for answers would mostly like lead to more ignorance on your part, this video being a prime example. The best thing I can suggest is to get educated properly not youtube videos
for one protein and carbohydrate are metabolized diffrently in terms of how much calories can actually be used because of how much it takes to burn them protein for example takes 20% of its own calories to burn and carbohydrate a mere 5%.
secondly food that is high GI can have poor uptake in terms of glycogen which means more will store as fat because it has been metabolised to quickly.
1000 calories junk and 1000 whole unproccessed foods would be totally different in terms of fat storage
@sol1deogloria your not very smart.....the only way people gain weight is because is because they took in more calories than their body burns up....ever notice how weight gain does NOT happen quickly ? it takes months or even years until you are 20 30 or 40 pounds overweight...most people do not stuff themselves with food...on a daily basis they might take in 300 or 400 calories....adding pounds per month or pounds per year.
@SubZeroSkyLine I dont think you understand how food is STORED calories means very little when the body uses it prefrentially e.g omega 3-6-9 fats are preffered by the body to be used as hormone precursors rather than energy. where as high GI foods containing refined sugars are preferentially stored as fat as the two carbon glucose molecules combine to form long chain unsaturated fatty acids. calories is a MEASUREMENT! how the body uses the energy i.e stored as fat, build, hormonal much different
@sol1deogloria you are very dumb. anytime you take in more calories than your body burns up. WEIGHT GAIN occurs. CALORIES ARE ENERGY. energy cannot be created or destroyed. it can either be used or stored as a saved form other wise known as BODY FAT....you have absolutely no idea what your talking about. it doesnt matter what you eat or what time of day you eat.
@SubZeroSkyLine Not the argument, argument is that different foods even though they may have The same calories, depending where the calories are coming from they are stored differently 2000 calories worth of chocolate and 2000 of broccoli are going to be used differently its not as simple as just going over you get fat. The body has methods of adaptation also.your saying more calories than you need equals more fat or storage.I understand where your coming from but i'm saying its not that simple.
@sol1deogloria calories are calories....there is no such thing as " bad " or " good " calories. it doesnt matter whether your diet is a double quarter pounder from McDonalds or a healthy diet....if you take in fewer calories than your body burns up...weight loss will occur....you can have the healthiest diet in the world...if you do not burn up those UNUSED calories....you will gain weight....its not rocket science.
Hey steve! Heres a question for ya.. What if you take your calories and are in a calorie deficit, but you what you ate was all fat. So your percentages ended up like this... Protein 10 % Carbs 20 % Fat 80 %.... Would you not gain fat and lose muscle?
I'm inclined to believe what this man is saying. I've experimented on myself over the years with this, taking months at time and eating mostly healthy foods, and taking other months and eating mostly unhealthy foods. The daily caloric intake was kept around the same, and my weight also did not fluctuate.
People need to understand that you don't *have to* eat healthier foods to lose weight, but to stay healthy and live longer. You can constantly eat BS and stay lean, but your insides suffer.
after watching a few of your videos i get the notion that food doesnt matter just exercise. I would disagree with this, food does matter. burning fat, building muscle is a 100% exercise and 100% diet. I know a girl that was very over-weight and she ate pretty healthy and pretty much only drank water and lived in the big city and walked all day. couldnt figure out why she was so fat until she told me she ate a carton of ice cream everynight before bed.
@cspine333 was your dumbass listening. dude the only way that fat bitch coulda gained weight if she ate over her caloric needs food cant make you fat you ass eating over your caloric intake will. some foods have more caloric value than others but if you ate less of those foods you can still lose weights cause your eating less calories
@TheRotpin You can, as long as you burn more calories than consume. What he is saying is true. Eating only whoppers in the long run may not be healthy for your body, and cause other issues, but his point is that less calories (smaller portions) and excersise regardless of what you eat will cause fat and weight loss. Ever notice people that eat like shit but are skinny? It's because they don't eat a lot of food and or are active enough to burn off the calories they've consumed.
Good vid. This is exactly true. Its all about energy expenditure. For example, simple carbs like sugar are bad for many health reasons, but a person could in fact eat cookies every day and not gain weight if they used all those calories up each day. They would not be healthy but they wouldn't necessarily be overweight. Problem is most people who eat lots of sweet foods do not burn it all off in a day and sugar causes overeating.
It's refreshing to see a fitness/nutrition expert who actually knows what he's talking about. There's so much bad information out there for people trying to lose weight, it's always "Eat less carbs, don't eat at night, eat 5/6 meals a day, etc." The only thing that you need to focus on when it comes to weight loss/control is calories in vs. calories out. When someone starts to understand that concept, weight and health become such a simple matter.
@minniv268 I am actually in my fourth year as a nutrition/ health fit major. The study that he is refrencing actually made the front page of Times mag. I went to a conference lead by the head of the ACSM the next week that was directed to educating as to why the study was poorly conducted and totally off base. I did not say one cookie, so relax. I said that the simple, refined sugars are in fact terrible. Nutrition is all about chemistry, and in that way, macronutrients are hugely important.
@anotheraccountism yea he said one cookie though there is nothing wrong with giving yourself a treat and you said dont listen to him like a cookie is gonna kill you. you over exadurated about one cookie or yogurt or anything. of course if you eat a whole batch but giving yourself a treat is fine
@doubleds200 i totaly agree.ofc you will get fat if you eat processed sugar.instead of chocolate try to eat an apple of two.your body needs sugars but NOT refined ones.
the fact that you eat chicken or salmon or whatever wont help you lose fat when you eat unhealthy sugar.
@doubleds200 your a fucking reatard. if i ate 5000 apples a day i would get fat cause each apple aprox has 10 cals and that is more calories than i need to maintain. dude just shut the fuck up you make no sense
ok so im 6ft 1 and about 192 pounds....... So if i eat peanut M+M's and popcorn and lets say 100grams of chicken and that all come to about 2000 calories and i ensure i train to get myself into a caloric deficit ill lose weight???
So it does not matter what types of food, or where the calories come from (i.e. carbohydrates, sugars, fats). Someone can eat only junk food (i.e. oreos, chocolate cake, or ice cream) all day, but as long as this person keeps the calorie intake below or at the same amount as he or she burns, then there will be no weight gain. Correct?
No certain foods make you fat, its the total amount of calories you take in. You can become overweight by eating large quantities of healthy foods. It doesn't matter what foods the calories are coming from, calories are calories.
@allz95 Skip the protein powders and shakes. They don't help with weight loss. They are just extra calories that will make weight loss more difficult.
@BodyPerformanceTV I like to have a protein shake in the morning along with some carbs and vegetables or fruit since i don't feel like cooking chicken in the morning. Is this fine? I'm only eating about 65 grams of protein a day. 1 scoop of whey protein is only 110 calories with 24 grams of protein.
I completely understand what Steve is talking about. I travel overseas with my kids for about 2 mths every year and I always lose weight during this time regardless of what I eat & we eat anything we like. The reason is cos my activity level goes through the roof , far more then when we're at home in our normal sedentary work routine. Whilst on holidays we walk a heck of a lot , carry bags and other heavy luggage , with 2 small kids sometimes have to carry them up down stairs stroller in tow..
Well I'm going to eat a bucket of fried chicken for KFC after watching this and probably engage in some lovely mint ice cream, maybe a gallon of it, maybe two gallons, or yet....
Maybe I could bathe in it and hope I lose weight when in fact the next morning everything will come out of my anus and become a pile of shit like this video because to be quite honest, it is pretty evident that certain foods you eat make you fat no matter what, just poop it out jabroni.
so steve. What you are saying is that nutrient timing, the role of hormones and macronutrient breakdowns dont matter? The body body is simplified enough to fall for simple calories in vs calories out without taking into account things like essential fatty acids and insulin sensitivity?
@xTheFormlessOneIGF1 YES! VERY few people are THAT sensititve to food. We are fat because of the slow accumulation of a small amount of calories over a long period of time.
I am confused how you think that an amount of energy will be absorbed in the same places in the presence of insulin vs not the presence of insulin? And how in an energy deficit, energy stored in the body will be taken from the same places when the body has adequate levels of essential fatty acids vs not having adequate levels of essential fatty acids. I am also confused how you do not believe that the way nutrients effect levels of testosterone, estrogen, cortisol mattr
in response 2. correction. When I was talking about insulin in my second response, I meant to contrast energy consumption with high insulin secretion......vs the same quanitity of energy consumption with less insulin secretion due to higher sensativity to the hormone.
But the problem is how do you know if you have or don't have genetics to build muscle. Look at the mirror which body type is your type Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. If your Endomorph forget about gaining muscle consider about diet than going to the gym and working out.
Steve i never thought of food in that way but you have a point. I actually came across your videos because of my curiosity to know whether or not a cheat day is actually a good thing. I'm about 8 weeks into my 12 week challenge and am having a bit of a hard time leaning down, and thought maybe losing the cheat day would make a difference - now i'm not so sure lol. Great videos mate i just subscribed :)
@myworkoutchallenge I'm going to answer your question on my 12-4-10 Sat. morning radio show from 9-10 am EST on 1340 am Tan Talk radio. tantalk1340 com I also upload it to iTunes. You can also listen at GreatFatLossPill com after I upload the show. Click on the On The Air tab at the top. ~Steve
i supposedly heard that "protein and crabs should not go together when you eating" that protein and vegetable or carbs and vegetable. but i come from a Bengali background and all we eat is curry with rice and meat. and many Bengali's eat like that and i don't see them getting fat especially one of my relatives who eats a lot and doesn't workout but he is still skinny. so basically "protein and carbs together bad" true? from what i am seeing i guess not?
@5graffitiartist5 your protien and vegetable question is about digestion, based from the fact that if you have digestion issues you should not concentrated carbohydrate and concentrated protein.gentics can come into play but also i diet high in wholesome foods which digest slowly will affect how much fat is stored anyway due to insulin response etc. Having protein with carb will slow digestion meaning less direct fat storage.
steve, thank you for opening my eyes to the simple truth. armed with that truth, and some discipline, i've lost over 50 lbs. and it has been painless.

@BodyPerformanceTV thanks steve! i've also gone up in strength through calisthenics. though i wanted to know, in your professional opinion, which do you think is better for strength, weights or calisthenics, or does it make difference?

People, people, people ... Steve is right about this. It's the NUMBER of calories, not the KIND of calories that you consume everyday, that make you fat. Think of it as quantity vs. quality. In this case, quantity is what counts when it concerns body fat. The quality is relavent to your overall health. It's really this simple: If you consume more calories on a regular basis than you burn, you'll get fat. Fat is the way the body stores excess calories. Basic metabolic physiology ... period.
are you telling me that if i ate 2500 calories of cheetos which is below than my 3000 calorie maintenance is i will lose weight? i still find that hard to believe, i believe in calorie quality. its like saying diet cola that has no calories in it will not make you fat but the truth is it actually does... i mightve misunderstood the vid :p i'll still sub tho haha i like u
@arcanblades If you eat 2500 calories worth of Cheetos each day, and your body uses 3000 calories each day (which is A LOT ... most people don't have that maintenance level, but it is possible), then yes, you will lose weight, even if you eat only Cheetos. You won't have to worry about it for very long, because you'll be in the hospital, close to death, because all you're eating is Cheetos, and they're not very nutritionally dense, but yes, that's how it works.
@TheDougBond yeah i believe so too lol because of the calorie deficit, however the 3000 healthy diet will still win mostly because of the thermogenic effect that healthy foods have, not to mention your liver will be less stressed out and continue to cleanse toxins and not worry of the cheetos toxins, and theres a whole bunch more reasons.. and hmmm 3000 calorie maintenance is pretty normal with fellow mesomorphs around my height.
@arcanblades Some foods do take more energy to metabolize than others, & some produce more heat than others when they metabolize (the thermogenic effect you're talking about), but it's a pretty minor consideration in overall metabolic activity. Also, that energy would be included in your 3000 calorie metabolism maintenance, technically, so the principle of the calorie deficit still holds true. You are correct, though, in that metabolism is a fairly complex process, involving many factors.
@arcanblades I know that some people, especially bodybuilders and pro atheletes, can use 3000 or more cals/day, but I was referring to the average person. An average person in modern society doesn't need anywhere near that amount to maintain a healthy weight. The fact that most people think 2500 cals is needed in average daily life is one of the reasons so many people are overweight now ... most people just aren't that active these days. I'm an ectomorph, btw, so I definitely use less. :)
Well all foods have calories but some foods have more and some have empty calories. The calories from a piece of broccoli would be "worth it" because of the nutritional value. Calories from a candy bar would be "empty" calories because of the virtual absence of nutrition. So if excess calories make you fat, then eating high-calorie foods like candy bars with almost no nutrition would be a major contributor in making you fat. substitute it with broccoli and you won't be fat... sinple.
Say you have breakfast ! have a pint to fill you up alot! on lunch have a pint. At supper have a pint. you will feel more full but with know food inside you and only water. so you will use the body fat to burn instead. get it ?
oh my god people chat so much shit it deosent matter what you eat as long as ur a active person then u aint got nuffink to worry about i meen when i say eat anythink i dont meen fast foods etc but eat things that are good for you see people that are lazy when they eat all the calories and fat amcumulate hence why you become fat cause your not doing any exersise to drain all the calories and fat off
Wait.. a minute! Devil's Advocate here. 1) Some foods liberate their energy quickly, others not so and this energy can make you respond by being active, changing your metabolism rate and also your daily hormone cycles. These hormone changes influence the way fat and protein is broken down, as well as your psychological state. Example: Coffee has NO calories, but the caffeine can spike your insulin more, changing more of those sugars into fat before you have time to use them!
And thanks for posting, appreciate it. Right now, I got a beer gut i want to lose. I know you probably think there is no such thing as a beer gut, because a calorie is a calorie. I have actually lost weight, and my BMI is better than it was, yet my beer gut is the biggest I've ever seen. Don't know why. So I'm going to try to restrict the starchier carbs.
@Marcfj That was not the point of the video. Clearly, veggies have more water/fiber which fill you up for less calories, which ice cream is very high fat and calories. However, a lot of people eat very healthy and can't get as lean as they'd like because they are taking in too many calories and don't understand the truth.

@EidadBedad I don't think it works that way. Your body needs those 2000 calories to function properly depending on your age and level of activity daily but let's just say we are talking about a regular person. if you eat 2000 calories a day you'll be allright. Besides, who can burn 1500 calories daily?? that sounds like 3 or 4 hours of INTENSE physical activity!
Hey Steve, I guess it basically comes down to one thing,, Calorie deficit. If you eat over a certain amount of calories weather it be from celery or ice cream, your gonna gain weight! God, I really do enjoy your segments...

before every (main)meal i eat lots of vegetables and fruit and drink water to get a bit filled up and also get my vitamins and then when i eat the main course i find it eating a small portion being enough for me...and for snacks i also eat veggies and fruit to avoid hunger before my next big meal and i also eat some stuff that should be taken in small quantities like some 70% cocoa chocolate or a handfull of nuts or some other food thats rich in nutrients that i perhaps didnt eat enough that day
hey..while i respect most of your videos, i disagree with this one. You can definatley narrow down which foods make you fat, You mentioned ice cream, a dinner roll..BINGO!! Those foods have a high glycemic index meaning that they will rapidly raise blood glucose and insulin levels.
Been on a low carb diet since Jan and although it worked for a few months im now at a stand still. I hate excercising but i know i need to. Any suggestions on how to get into it and actually want to excercise? I know afterwords i always feel good but the inital getting off my ass to actually do it is a struggle to say the least. Any suggestions?
@n0imaginati0n - good for you. low carb is a great healthy to get healthy and lean. try to do some weight trainig and bodyweight training 2-3 x a week with occasional light cardio.
@topheramazz Thanks! its been an ongoing battle my whole life im so proud of myself! I have been doing just as you said for the last 2 weeks and feel great! No more excuses! Cheers!
Hey steve,i wanna gain at least 20 pounds this year and i eat 6 times a day of healthy and full of protein food and run and lift weight one day and push ups sit ups the next day, then drink protein shake after,is this a good workout that make me gain weight?
@lollipopin510 - 20 lbs lean/real muscle in 1 year is kinda unrealistic unless your a genetic beast or are on anabolics.
the best approach would be to do bodybuilding routines 3x a week-
2-3 muscle groups a session,2-3 exercises per muscle group,2-4 sets at 8-12 reps as heavy as you can(safely)with PERFECT form at HIGH INTENSITY. focus on compound movements and rest/sleep is when you grow.
mix some juice(carbs)with post workout at a 2/1 ratio.
@pedanpontif That is absolutely not correct. There are parts of heart disease that still remain a mystery. If you want to learn what we know IN FACT can cause or lead to heart disease,...consult your doctor or the Amercian Heart Association. They know,...and you clearly do not.
@BodyPerformanceTV ROFLMAO It's me, Steve Lewis from Facebook! Whats going on? I just connected my account here to Facebook! Now everytime I post a comment here its going to post on my Facebook Wall! More Steve Lewis! Yay! lol.

Steve - I'd just like to say a big thank you for mentioning me and my late father Carl, in your most recent broadcast on Tan Talk 1340. It really meant a lot to me and I know my father, Carl, is looking down, smiling at what you are doing for everyone.
Hello, I just started watching your videos and I wanted to tell you how nice it is to hear someone who knows what they are talking about. I'm 5'3 and 188lbs at my heaviest right now and theres nothing more that I would like to do than slap myself silly for allowing myself to over eat, make poor food choices and not exercise. Diets, fads and trends are useless.
In a way there are foods that makes u fat. Because high sugar things can increase ur apatite wich makes it harder to eat less food=less calories. high fibre comlex carbohydrates raise ur bloodsugar slower providing u ongoing energy source. High sugar intake increas blood sugar quicker telling ur body to produce insulin fast then insulin drops bloodsugar quickly, ur blood sugar drops coz of the rush of insulin, u crave for food mainly sugary food which raise ur blodsugar again, and it is a circle
@imrepeto I TOTALLY agree with you! Steve has mentioned that the rise in blood glucose from sugary processed foods is not as dramatic as once thought. That may be true,...but boy do sugary foods stimulate my appetite for more of the same. My calorie intake does increase. I hope this is not some precursor for diabetes. But nevertheless, the bottom line of this video is correct. It's the total calories for the day,..and not any specific food.
@brushfour44 Hey - now that is interesting. I don't have those cravings after i eat a sugary meal like that, maybe you should ask steve what he thinks and he'll tell you.
@stevelewisisasexymom Hmmmm, really. Now, when I say " after " a sugary or processed foods meal,..I mean like 3-4 hours later or whenever the next meal comes. I want more of the same essentially. The reason I do is because some hours after the sugary meal, my blood sugar level is now lower, and my brain knows what foods will bring it back up. And those foods of course are more processed quick fix sugary type meals. That is interesting that you don't experience this like I do.

i gotta disagree there man. obviously it's not just one food that makes you fat, but there are foods that speed up the process. if you eat a candy bar every day, you can rest assured that the candy bar is responsible for your weight gain.
@Russellt0228 The candy bar will NOT add weight if you're burning more calories daily then you take in. That's the point of the video. I wouldn't advocate candy bars,...but you're not understanding the point of the video and how calories work. If you were very active and ate a candy bar everyday,,...and consumed more calories through normal meals,...you would actually LOSE weight if your daily calories burned out did the candy bar and the meals.
my father was very happy when I told him what Steve is doing here; hes offering all oft this free information out there to help people get past all of the myths that have been generated. he applauded him for it
I have written Steve on facebook and he will give me and my late father, carl, both shout outs on his next live saturday morning radio show.It will be nice to hear. My father always preached health and fitness but suprisingly died of a heart attack in early April. I guess you just cant stop genetics:( He was in good health his whole life,.never smoked, lifted regularly and got plenty of exercise. its been nice talking to you.
he was the only family member left for me. my mom passed last August and I have no siblings. my parents had no sisters or brothers...so no aunts or uncles to turn to. ive reconnected with john lately and it has been nice to talk with an old friend again. i assume hes told you that we used to be training partners back in high school? we got into an arguement over a girl (his wife) and didnt talk again until my father passed
if u want to connect on facebook you are welcome to message me. you seem like a really nice guy. I talk to Polishmysac(Marshall Alexander Martin) and AtomicDon(Donald A Wynecoop) on there a lot. Its good discussion and we'ld loveto have you join in. Take care and have a good day.
@s I appreicate the invitation Steve. I may do that. Right now I'm not on Facebook or any of those things. Even getting a computer and getting on the internet was orginally a big deal for me.Yes I do portrait, landscape and figure painting professionally. My computer is in my studio where I am now. That's why I'm on it at different hours of the day and night. If there is ONE THING that I claim I can do well, it's spot changes in body compositions of other people. I have a VERY good eye for that.
@brushfour44 thank you for responding Brushfour44. I hope your business does well. You seem very talented. It must be nice to make your own hours, right? ive been using it lately to get in touch with some old friends from high school and yes let me know if you ever join up on facebook. My father passed recently and its just starting to hit me:( He passed a couple months ago and im just started to feel the effects. i feel lonelier than ever and am going out to visit his grave in connecticut.
@stevelewisisasexymom Wow. THAT was a very tough bit of information to read. I AM very very sorry to hear this Steve. I actually get what's going on and why...and you're delyed reaction to his passing makes all the more sense. Surrounding yourself with friends and people you know is the RIGHT thing to do. And without an extented family.... Lets just say I think it's a good idea for you to keep posting. ~ Brush
@brushfour44 thanks for your condolences bud. yes..it is rather strange that it just hit me after all these months. i will keep posting here as ive built good relationships here.
@brushfour44 Hey bud - I am going to need to consult your wisdom again. do you believe it is necessary to touch your chest when bench pressing? I have been warned this is dangerous for the shoulders.
@stevelewi You know I wish I knew the full answer here. I have always touched my chest with bench pressing....I never knew there was another way. And certainly if you're going to compete in Powerlifting you sure has heck better be touching your chest. BUT,....I have seen more and more lifters doing their bench press workout at much more shallow depths...who have real good chest development. Polish to name one,..but I've seen others. There may be no magic at all in benching from the chest.
@brushfour44 thanks:) Youve been a big help here. I have another question concerning the bench press. i severely damaged my lower back years ago, do u feel wearing a weight lifting belt adds to the problem? or will it help support my torso?
Steve -- are you former military or law enforcement?
2nd question -- I agree with your sentiment here, but when I was a raw foodist mostly a fruitarian I was eating the same number of calories in fruit as I was on my more "meat and potatoes" diet, yet I still lost 75lbs of "fat" -- wouldn't you say that the type of food is important as far as bioavailability ("work" to transform it into simple sugars combined with total use)?
@OctoBox lol....I don't think I would walk around society telling people I'm a " fruitarian." I know what you mean,...but most people would...well, think otherwise.
@brushfour44 -- It was 17 years ago and I was very ill, it worked to cure many of my back problems, headaches, alergies, hypoglycemia, and respitory issues. My point is that it was water and oxygen rich; which most other foods are not, but the calories were just as high. So, why the weight loss, given Steve's thoughts above?
I'm pretty muscular now and probably 20lbs more than the ideal, but I look good.
@OctoBox No I'm not knocking natural whole foods as a source of nutrients and bulk and fiber. They're very healthy for you...that's why they are recommended. But every already basically knows that. The majority of what I eat is natural whole foods: Vegetables, fruits, lean dairy, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, etc. If you're 6',2", then you probably don't want to be any lighter then 170 lbs. 6','2" is very slight and is not the ideal. The reason you lost weight is because.....
@OctoBox I meant to say 6',2" 150 lbs. is not the ideal. That weight and heigth would make you very slight. The reason you lost weight when you at natural whole foods is because the bulk and fiber has not been removed and those foods are very filling for very few calories. They are water dense as well and they simply fill up the stomach before you can consume very much in the way of calories. The calories of the foods you were consuming before the weightloss were substantially more.
@Oct I'm a natural foods consumer, but Steve's point about calories must be understood and is absolutely and undeniably correct. It's practically impossible to eat enough fruits daily to maintain a weight of 240 lbs. It really can't be done. You were suggesting that the calories in the foods that maintained your weight were the same as when you switched to fruits and I'm saying that is not true. You may also, and probably do, have a food allergy of some sort. Weightloss is calorie related only.
What Steve is also saying is other then the bulk, fiber and nutrients, there is nothing else magical about fruits. You would have lost this weight if you would have cut your calories by any other means...OR increased your daily calorie burn through exercise. I've read and talked to people who believe all sorts of magicl things come by way of certain foods. They suggest foods have magical powers all their own and certain foods make you fat or sick and on and on. Fat is un-used stored calories.
@brushfour44 -- Ummmm, no. I know how to count calories I was a recreational body builder before. I went from 245 to 170. 2600 calories before
When I was eating fruits and greens I was drinking 2 quarts of green drink (greens and fruit) 189 calories per cup (times 8 or 1512 calories). I could easily eat 7 banans for breakfast and would eat mangoes, spouts, and lots of dark berry fruits (blackberries, blue berries etc). It was easily 2600 calories.
@OctoBox Octo, if 2600 calorie per day maintained a weight of 245 lbs.,...and you dropped suddenly to 170lbs, that will tell you that you were NOT consuming as many calories as before. In fact, you were consuming consideralby less. Not only were you consuming less calories Octo, you were consuming so many less that you lost a certain amount of muscle on the way down. You cannot get away from, as many try,...basic physiology of the human body. Weightloss/gain is related to calories only.

Holy crap, quite the argument going on down below.. Its hard to argue against the fact that when the dust settles, it doesn't matter what you eat, weight loss will occur as long as your in a caloric deficit.
shurdawg 3 months ago 2
Not all calories are created equal. Nutrient dense calories go to work in the body repairing and building muscle, feeding your trillions of cells, and providing sustainable energy. Empty calories are poison in the body that do nothing but ravage blood sugar levels and ultimately make you more hungry. It's not as simple as calories in vs calories out. Calories that nourish the body are used in ways other than just to be burned as energy. You can't compare an apple to a candy bar.
mrodzen007 3 months ago
@mrodzen007 but how can you explain that on such a basic level that even subzeroskyline will understand??
these people are brainwashed. if only the human body were that simple.
sol1deogloria 3 months ago
@sol1deogloria If it were that simple we would all be lean. By the way, your earlier comment about having protein with carbs is right on. So many people don't realize the impact insulin has on fat storage.

The best thing I can suggest is to get educated properly not youtube videos
sol1deogloria 3 months ago
what you eat is as important as how much you eat! terrible advice, telling people to eat what ever they want.
UpYours101 4 months ago
for one protein and carbohydrate are metabolized diffrently in terms of how much calories can actually be used because of how much it takes to burn them protein for example takes 20% of its own calories to burn and carbohydrate a mere 5%.
secondly food that is high GI can have poor uptake in terms of glycogen which means more will store as fat because it has been metabolised to quickly.
1000 calories junk and 1000 whole unproccessed foods would be totally different in terms of fat storage
sol1deogloria 5 months ago
@sol1deogloria your not very smart.....the only way people gain weight is because is because they took in more calories than their body burns up....ever notice how weight gain does NOT happen quickly ? it takes months or even years until you are 20 30 or 40 pounds overweight...most people do not stuff themselves with food...on a daily basis they might take in 300 or 400 calories....adding pounds per month or pounds per year.
SubZeroSkyLine 4 months ago
@SubZeroSkyLine I dont think you understand how food is STORED calories means very little when the body uses it prefrentially e.g omega 3-6-9 fats are preffered by the body to be used as hormone precursors rather than energy. where as high GI foods containing refined sugars are preferentially stored as fat as the two carbon glucose molecules combine to form long chain unsaturated fatty acids. calories is a MEASUREMENT! how the body uses the energy i.e stored as fat, build, hormonal much different
sol1deogloria 3 months ago
@sol1deogloria you are very dumb. anytime you take in more calories than your body burns up. WEIGHT GAIN occurs. CALORIES ARE ENERGY. energy cannot be created or destroyed. it can either be used or stored as a saved form other wise known as BODY FAT....you have absolutely no idea what your talking about. it doesnt matter what you eat or what time of day you eat.
SubZeroSkyLine 3 months ago
@SubZeroSkyLine Not the argument, argument is that different foods even though they may have The same calories, depending where the calories are coming from they are stored differently 2000 calories worth of chocolate and 2000 of broccoli are going to be used differently its not as simple as just going over you get fat. The body has methods of adaptation also.your saying more calories than you need equals more fat or storage.I understand where your coming from but i'm saying its not that simple.
sol1deogloria 3 months ago
@sol1deogloria calories are calories....there is no such thing as " bad " or " good " calories. it doesnt matter whether your diet is a double quarter pounder from McDonalds or a healthy diet....if you take in fewer calories than your body burns up...weight loss will occur....you can have the healthiest diet in the world...if you do not burn up those UNUSED calories....you will gain weight....its not rocket science.
SubZeroSkyLine 3 months ago

Well i'm only going to eat whoppers now then
TheRotpin 6 months ago
@TheRotpin You can, as long as you burn more calories than consume. What he is saying is true. Eating only whoppers in the long run may not be healthy for your body, and cause other issues, but his point is that less calories (smaller portions) and excersise regardless of what you eat will cause fat and weight loss. Ever notice people that eat like shit but are skinny? It's because they don't eat a lot of food and or are active enough to burn off the calories they've consumed.

scottraposo 6 months ago
Good vid. This is exactly true. Its all about energy expenditure. For example, simple carbs like sugar are bad for many health reasons, but a person could in fact eat cookies every day and not gain weight if they used all those calories up each day. They would not be healthy but they wouldn't necessarily be overweight. Problem is most people who eat lots of sweet foods do not burn it all off in a day and sugar causes overeating.
tecnolover2642 6 months ago
It's refreshing to see a fitness/nutrition expert who actually knows what he's talking about. There's so much bad information out there for people trying to lose weight, it's always "Eat less carbs, don't eat at night, eat 5/6 meals a day, etc." The only thing that you need to focus on when it comes to weight loss/control is calories in vs. calories out. When someone starts to understand that concept, weight and health become such a simple matter.

someone even minimally educated in nutrition CAN AND WILL tell you which food made you fat. the ignorance present in this video is astounding.
Cookie: main ingredient- sugar. other ingredients- butter, flour, chocolate chips. all of these things are terrible.
Granola Bar: easily 20 grams of sugar
Yogurt (if processed, think Trix) easily another 30 grams of sugar.
Calories in- Calories out is flat out wrong. Please for the love of Jesus Mary and Abe Lincoln do not take his advice.

Correct?
sabby123456789 1 year ago
@sabby123456789 - Correct. If you are just trying to maintain, cals in vs. cals out is all that matters.
However, if you are looking to add lean muscle mass, then the quality of those calories does matter.

I completely understand what Steve is talking about. I travel overseas with my kids for about 2 mths every year and I always lose weight during this time regardless of what I eat & we eat anything we like. The reason is cos my activity level goes through the roof , far more then when we're at home in our normal sedentary work routine. Whilst on holidays we walk a heck of a lot , carry bags and other heavy luggage , with 2 small kids sometimes have to carry them up down stairs stroller in tow..

so steve. What you are saying is that nutrient timing, the role of hormones and macronutrient breakdowns dont matter? The body body is simplified enough to fall for simple calories in vs calories out without taking into account things like essential fatty acids and insulin sensitivity?
xTheFormlessOneIGF1 1 year ago
@xTheFormlessOneIGF1 YES! VERY few people are THAT sensititve to food. We are fat because of the slow accumulation of a small amount of calories over a long period of time.

@BodyPerformanceTV
I am also confused how you do not believe that the way nutrients effect levels of testosterone, estrogen, cortisol mattr

hey steve
i supposedly heard that "protein and crabs should not go together when you eating" that protein and vegetable or carbs and vegetable. but i come from a Bengali background and all we eat is curry with rice and meat. and many Bengali's eat like that and i don't see them getting fat especially one of my relatives who eats a lot and doesn't workout but he is still skinny. so basically "protein and carbs together bad" true? from what i am seeing i guess not?
5graffitiartist5 1 year ago
@5graffitiartist5 your protien and vegetable question is about digestion, based from the fact that if you have digestion issues you should not concentrated carbohydrate and concentrated protein.gentics can come into play but also i diet high in wholesome foods which digest slowly will affect how much fat is stored anyway due to insulin response etc. Having protein with carb will slow digestion meaning less direct fat storage.

Basic metabolic physiology ... period.

are you telling me that if i ate 2500 calories of cheetos which is below than my 3000 calorie maintenance is i will lose weight? i still find that hard to believe, i believe in calorie quality. its like saying diet cola that has no calories in it will not make you fat but the truth is it actually does... i mightve misunderstood the vid :p i'll still sub tho haha i like u
arcanblades 1 year ago
@arcanblades If you eat 2500 calories worth of Cheetos each day, and your body uses 3000 calories each day (which is A LOT ... most people don't have that maintenance level, but it is possible), then yes, you will lose weight, even if you eat only Cheetos. You won't have to worry about it for very long, because you'll be in the hospital, close to death, because all you're eating is Cheetos, and they're not very nutritionally dense, but yes, that's how it works.
TheDougBond 1 year ago
@TheDougBond yeah i believe so too lol because of the calorie deficit, however the 3000 healthy diet will still win mostly because of the thermogenic effect that healthy foods have, not to mention your liver will be less stressed out and continue to cleanse toxins and not worry of the cheetos toxins, and theres a whole bunch more reasons.. and hmmm 3000 calorie maintenance is pretty normal with fellow mesomorphs around my height.
arcanblades 1 year ago
@arcanblades Some foods do take more energy to metabolize than others, & some produce more heat than others when they metabolize (the thermogenic effect you're talking about), but it's a pretty minor consideration in overall metabolic activity. Also, that energy would be included in your 3000 calorie metabolism maintenance, technically, so the principle of the calorie deficit still holds true. You are correct, though, in that metabolism is a fairly complex process, involving many factors.
TheDougBond 1 year ago
@arcanblades I know that some people, especially bodybuilders and pro atheletes, can use 3000 or more cals/day, but I was referring to the average person. An average person in modern society doesn't need anywhere near that amount to maintain a healthy weight. The fact that most people think 2500 cals is needed in average daily life is one of the reasons so many people are overweight now ... most people just aren't that active these days. I'm an ectomorph, btw, so I definitely use less. :)
TheDougBond 1 year ago
@TheDougBond yeh you'll lose weight because your under the calorie needs....and it will be pure lean muscle loss not fat.

vietguy808 1 year ago
Well all foods have calories but some foods have more and some have empty calories. The calories from a piece of broccoli would be "worth it" because of the nutritional value. Calories from a candy bar would be "empty" calories because of the virtual absence of nutrition. So if excess calories make you fat, then eating high-calorie foods like candy bars with almost no nutrition would be a major contributor in making you fat. substitute it with broccoli and you won't be fat... sinple.

Wait..

God, I really do enjoy your segments...

before every (main)meal i eat lots of vegetables and fruit and drink water to get a bit filled up and also get my vitamins and then when i eat the main course i find it eating a small portion being enough for me...and for snacks i also eat veggies and fruit to avoid hunger before my next big meal and i also eat some stuff that should be taken in small quantities like some 70% cocoa chocolate or a handfull of nuts or some other food thats rich in nutrients that i perhaps didnt eat enough that day
esQo0020 1 year ago
hey..while i respect most of your videos, i disagree with this one.

Hey steve,i wanna gain at least 20 pounds this year and i eat 6 times a day of healthy and full of protein food and run and lift weight one day and push ups sit ups the next day, then drink protein shake after,is this a good workout that make me gain weight?
lollipopin510 1 year ago
@lollipopin510 - 20 lbs lean/real muscle in 1 year is kinda unrealistic unless your a genetic beast or are on anabolics.
the best approach would be to do bodybuilding routines 3x a week-
2-3 muscle groups a session,2-3 exercises per muscle group,2-4 sets at 8-12 reps as heavy as you can(safely)with PERFECT form at HIGH INTENSITY. focus on compound movements and rest/sleep is when you grow.
mix some juice(carbs)with post workout at a 2/1 ratio.
avoid too much cardio. eat whole foods EAT :)

@pedanpontif That is absolutely not correct. There are parts of heart disease that still remain a mystery. If you want to learn what we know IN FACT can cause or lead to heart disease,...consult your doctor or the Amercian Heart Association. They know,...and you clearly do not.

High sugar intake increas blood sugar quicker telling ur body to produce insulin fast then insulin drops bloodsugar quickly, ur blood sugar drops coz of the rush of insulin, u crave for food mainly sugary food which raise ur blodsugar again, and it is a circle
imrepeto 1 year ago
@imrepeto I TOTALLY agree with you! Steve has mentioned that the rise in blood glucose from sugary processed foods is not as dramatic as once thought. That may be true,...but boy do sugary foods stimulate my appetite for more of the same. My calorie intake does increase. I hope this is not some precursor for diabetes. But nevertheless, the bottom line of this video is correct. It's the total calories for the day,..and not any specific food.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@brushfour44 Hey - now that is interesting. I don't have those cravings after i eat a sugary meal like that, maybe you should ask steve what he thinks and he'll tell you.
stevelewisisasexymom 1 year ago

Russellt0228 1 year ago
@Russellt0228 The candy bar will NOT add weight if you're burning more calories daily then you take in. That's the point of the video. I wouldn't advocate candy bars,...but you're not understanding the point of the video and how calories work. If you were very active and ate a candy bar everyday,,...and consumed more calories through normal meals,...you would actually LOSE weight if your daily calories burned out did the candy bar and the meals.

It must be nice to make your own hours, right? ive been using it lately to get in touch with some old friends from high school and yes let me know if you ever join up on facebook. stevelewisisasexymom 1 year ago
@brushfour44 Hey bud - I am going to need to consult your wisdom again. do you believe it is necessary to touch your chest when bench pressing? I have been warned this is dangerous for the shoulders.
Steve
stevelewisisasexymom 1 year ago
@stevelewi You know I wish I knew the full answer here. I have always touched my chest with bench pressing....I never knew there was another way. And certainly if you're going to compete in Powerlifting you sure has heck better be touching your chest. BUT,....I have seen more and more lifters doing their bench press workout at much more shallow depths...who have real good chest development. Polish to name one,..but I've seen others. There may be no magic at all in benching from the chest.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@brushfour44 thanks:) Youve been a big help here. I have another question concerning the bench press. i severely damaged my lower back years ago, do u feel wearing a weight lifting belt adds to the problem? or will it help support my torso?
thanks again for your help and take care
stevelewisisasexymom 1 year ago
How old are you?
dutyfan11 1 year ago
Steve -- are you former military or law enforcement?
2nd question -- I agree with your sentiment here, but when I was a raw foodist mostly a fruitarian I was eating the same number of calories in fruit as I was on my more "meat and potatoes" diet, yet I still lost 75lbs of "fat" -- wouldn't you say that the type of food is important as far as bioavailability ("work" to transform it into simple sugars combined with total use)?
OctoBox 1 year ago
@OctoBox lol....I don't think I would walk around society telling people I'm a " fruitarian." I know what you mean,...but most people would...well, think otherwise.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@brushfour44 -- It was 17 years ago and I was very ill, it worked to cure many of my back problems, headaches, alergies, hypoglycemia, and respitory issues. My point is that it was water and oxygen rich; which most other foods are not, but the calories were just as high. So, why the weight loss, given Steve's thoughts above?
I'm pretty muscular now and probably 20lbs more than the ideal, but I look good.
6'2" 240lbs (back then) 170lbs
OctoBox 1 year ago
@OctoBox No I'm not knocking natural whole foods as a source of nutrients and bulk and fiber. They're very healthy for you...that's why they are recommended. But every already basically knows that. The majority of what I eat is natural whole foods: Vegetables, fruits, lean dairy, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, etc. If you're 6',2", then you probably don't want to be any lighter then 170 lbs. 6','2" is very slight and is not the ideal. The reason you lost weight is because.....
brushfour44 1 year ago
@OctoBox I meant to say 6',2" 150 lbs. is not the ideal. That weight and heigth would make you very slight. The reason you lost weight when you at natural whole foods is because the bulk and fiber has not been removed and those foods are very filling for very few calories. They are water dense as well and they simply fill up the stomach before you can consume very much in the way of calories. The calories of the foods you were consuming before the weightloss were substantially more.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@Oct I'm a natural foods consumer, but Steve's point about calories must be understood and is absolutely and undeniably correct. It's practically impossible to eat enough fruits daily to maintain a weight of 240 lbs. It really can't be done. You were suggesting that the calories in the foods that maintained your weight were the same as when you switched to fruits and I'm saying that is not true. You may also, and probably do, have a food allergy of some sort. Weightloss is calorie related only.
brushfour44 1 year ago
What Steve is also saying is other then the bulk, fiber and nutrients, there is nothing else magical about fruits. You would have lost this weight if you would have cut your calories by any other means...OR increased your daily calorie burn through exercise. I've read and talked to people who believe all sorts of magicl things come by way of certain foods. They suggest foods have magical powers all their own and certain foods make you fat or sick and on and on. Fat is un-used stored calories.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@brushfour44 -- Ummmm, no. I know how to count calories I was a recreational body builder before. I went from 245 to 170. 2600 calories before
When I was eating fruits and greens I was drinking 2 quarts of green drink (greens and fruit) 189 calories per cup (times 8 or 1512 calories). I could easily eat 7 banans for breakfast and would eat mangoes, spouts, and lots of dark berry fruits (blackberries, blue berries etc). It was easily 2600 calories.
A chimp will eat 50 banans in one sit
OctoBox 1 year ago
@OctoBox Octo, if 2600 calorie per day maintained a weight of 245 lbs.,...and you dropped suddenly to 170lbs, that will tell you that you were NOT consuming as many calories as before. In fact, you were consuming consideralby less. Not only were you consuming less calories Octo, you were consuming so many less that you lost a certain amount of muscle on the way down. You cannot get away from, as many try,...basic physiology of the human body. Weightloss/gain is related to calories only.
brushfour44 1 year ago
@brushfour44 -- Well there is a way to test it. Eat your current calorie count in fruit and greens only.
I'm telling you however how much fruit I was eating -- I know exactly because I kept a diary.
From my Food Diary: 5-7 bananas, 2 quarts of green drink, 2 grapefruit, 2 large oranges, 1 avacado, full pack of b
